Marathon training
« on: September 25, 2011, 07:14:42 pm »
This is my second year trying to train for the Philadelphia marathon.

Last year I had to drop out and get my feet fixed.  But this year, I've been pretty much following the NYTimes marathon training program for old people who are new "runners"  (run/walkers might be a better description). http://health.nytimes.com/run-well/plans/resources/5

Had a little scare with a pulled groin muscle a few weeks ago that set me back a week, but I'm tryng to get back on schedule.  It's slowed me down though (and I was pretty slow to start with   ;) ).

This week I did a 17.46 mile long "run" (run/walk/limp).  It was raining that day, but I snapped a couple of pics on the back roads between where I live and the Delaware river

Between mile 3 and 4 -- this is some preserved "open space"

Looking to mile 8.5 or so.  Those are rolled hay bales in the near field.  The far field is soybeans turning yellow.

By mile 12 it was raining too hard to take the phone out of the baggie (and I'm not sure I could have held it steady  :D )

So, anybody else prepping for a marathon?

I would have a hard time running 1/2 a block, much less 12 miles.

Congrats!  Will and you are my heroes!

Will (and Phil)

You know it is really surprising to me how much farther I've gotten with a training program than anything before.  You might surprise yourself.

The way this training method works is more like a forced march.  For the long runs I run 250 double paces, walk 50 double paces ... I can do that for most of the distance -- then the limping...

I'm not going to set any speed records, but at age 55 I wan't exactly dreamining of winning my first marathon anyway.  Winning will be crossing the finish line before they close the course.

The long runs are every two weeks, in between there are shorter runs that I do with a higher running to walking ratio.  There is a two or three day recovery period after each of the long runs before going back to the shorter runs.

It is pretty cool the way that it builds your endurance up -- I couldn't imagine a 7 mile run before much less 17 -- the most I'd ever done was 4.7 miles and that felt like a marathon to me.  But my next long "run" is supposed to be 20 miles and it actually feels doable at this point.  26.2 still seems pretty improbable but, who knows, maybe I'll make it.  If not, I figure I can always expire gracefully on Miss P's front stoop...

Don't do what I did and overdo it. Stick with the training routine. Good luck!

Thanks, I was thinking about you when I went in to the doctor a few weeks back.

I had stepped off into the verge because of an oncoming car and stupidly kept running on ground that was less level than it looked.  He was afraid I might have fractured something in my hip, but I was lucky and got off just a sprain in the groin.  So pain pills and two weeks off and I'm on probation -- I'm supposed to stop if the pain gets worse.  My doc has been really supportive, though, he likes the idea that this may help the cholesterol numbers.

So are you going to be able to try again next year?

I have decided not to run distances over 5 miles until next year. Right now I am focusing on weight training. I am not sure if I will do a full marathon next year, maybe a half marathon to start.

I do get  motivated when I see those 26.2 bumper stickers.

Is Bipedalism necessary?
« Reply #7 on: November 08, 2011, 05:31:12 pm »
Should Bipedalism be reconsidered?

Discuss

In other news did my practice round this weekend -- 26.5 miles which is a marathon plus a quarter mile "for luck".  Fine til mile 18/19, but then.... Final two miles were basically at 1 mph and my feet swelled up to an amazing size...  Stilll, I figure I'll turn out on the 20th in Philly -- the worst that will happen is they pull me off the course at the halfway mark.

Cheers

Good luck Assurb with the Philly marathon, hope you get perfect Autumn weather as we did this past Sunday for our great New York City marathon.  It should be a great experience for you.

I firmly discourage it's practice. I always make my boys come to me on all fours.

I hope it goes well with the running of the marathon Mr. Urban.  My wife use to do marathons but hasn't been in one since having the baby.  She started running again a couple of months ago when I began working out again.  I believe she's at 3 miles in 40 minutes right now....

Yes wasn't the weather great this weekend? -- it felt really good out here too (for the first 10 miles).  For practice I started at the official time too, when it was only 34 degrees.

Thanks for posting the link above. James and I are going to start training for the Disney Wine and Dine Half Marathon which takes place every October. I've been looking around for a training schedule for persons who are older and without running experience. This program looks like it may be a good starting point.

Um ok, glad I didnt attempt the marathon...one person died and 48 collapsed. Some runners said there was not adequate hydration the last 5 miles and that the finish had very little water and protein snacks.

Downtown Philadelphia from the Art Museum circle at 7 AM, 10 minutes before the start

I wound up doing the half marathon.  I had done a full marathon plus a quarter mile workout two weeks ago and it was just too soon to do a full one for real.  I managed to avoid foot surgery last year by a complicated regimen of injections, rest, new shoes and orthotics, but my feet seem to take a long time to heal from a long run.  One of my arches started bleeding during the run today from some spots that hadn't quite healed from two weeks ago.

It was a very odd experience in some ways.  The day started with a power outage up here in NJ at 4:30 AM, so I packed my stuff and got dressed for the run by candlepower. (Plus went outside to get a bucket of water from the rainbarrel to flush.  Not to turn this into another bowel movement thread, but there is a lot of preparation required before running long distances in the morning.)

And I wasn't prepared for so many people!  Theoretically I knew there would be thousands, but I train on the roads out here in the rural part of NJ, and to avoid having to run in the ditch I usually go for the most deserted ones.  If I see three other runners it is a big day.  So the energy and camaraderie from the other runners were great! Not so sure about the helpful comments from strangers though (note to self, if doing this again give them a nickname for the bib rather than the formal first name that is on the credit card).  But the cheering crowds at the end were really fantastic.

It was a beautiful day with some leaves still on the trees and a wonderful view of Philadelphia's buildings and monuments.

And the power is back on at home... nice, long bath.

So I'm happy

(as long as there is Motrin  :)).

Somehow I missed this thread months ago. So Assurbanipal thinks he can waltz into my city and not pay the Queen a visit? This has been duly noted and filed for future reference.

ps: sorry your feet are bleeding. If you end up needing foot surgery I can lend you my crutches.
