New concerns over HIV infection case
Allegations that a southeast Missouri man recklessly infected a former partner with HIV have prompted others to reach out to police with their own concerns.
Police last week arrested 36-year-old David Mangum of Dexter after his former partner tested positive for HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. Mangum is charged with felony recklessly infecting another with HIV.
The Dexter Daily Statesman (http://bit.ly/14VbQ1X ) reports that since the story was reported in the media, Dexter detective Cory Mills has interviewed six other people who have raised concerns, and he plans to speak to even more people. He declined to say how many have tested positive for HIV.
Police say Mangum told them he has been HIV-positive since 2003 and has had up to 300 partners since then. He told police that 50 to 60 of those partners were in Stoddard County, a rural county about 130 miles south of St. Louis with about 30,000 residents.

It's a side note, but why do they always say "HIV, the virus that causes AIDS".
1) Everyone knows that.
2) It's not the inevitable disease progression anymore, but they make it sounds that way.
3) "AIDS" is a more sensational term than "HIV", so are they just ginning up the story?

I get pissed off with the way some new folks make HIV sound. CNN anchor said yesterday talking about this story that she would be upset if someone give her a death sentence. I don't feel like I have a death sentence

It's not a death sentence but sadly that makes for "dramatic TV news."

We have two threads on the same topic my dears.
"HIV the virus that causes AIDS" is true. Its a better than news reports that accept the terms interchangeably. "He gave me AIDS". "How many new AIDS infections this year."

I find that statement particularly objectionable. In addition to the obvious lack of certainty that HIV will progress to AIDS (and again the speaker has the responsibility to test and obtain treatment), unless it was rape the person WILLINGLY PARTICIPATED in an activity which had a high risk of HIV infection. "He" didn't give that person anything.

That and because a good percentage of people only remember "Safe Sex" training that they had in high school in the 90's, and they figure you can get HIV from breathing on someone. They remain ignorant about the virus itself, this is clearly demonstrated in the "Am I infected?" forum. People have read about situations like theirs and yet they somehow feel that their case is SPECIAL...

Back to the main topic, in this backwoods part of the country it's very rare that anybody bothers to think about condom use. So the events in Missouri really aren't surprising to me.
Last night at a bar I met an adorable boy (who is far too young for me - in fact he's 9 days older than my son). I was pleasantly surprised because he MADE A POINT of telling me that he had condoms at home. That's the first time I EVER heard such a thing here.
Oh, and because ENQUIRING minds want to know - we didn't actually use any of those condoms. We left the bar 2 hours apart and went to our respective homes.
I did receive a pleasant text message from him this morning though (otherwise how would I know what time he left the bar?)
