drug trial? should i be scared

hi, i tested poz in jan with 50 t cells and over 1 million VL

i was allergic to septrin. badly.

i caught PCP. was v ill

but now i am undectable with t cell 194  and at 9%

i feel great. lost weight but all back on.........and some


but my dog wants me to do a drug trial

i currently take truvada and kaletra  but they want to see if i am allergiv to kivexa (abacavir) as truvada has weakened guys bones and i am still very young and my hiv is advanced (apparently)

i will be monitered but should i just stick to my normal routine. if i get sick they said i can go back to truvada


any knowledge about these trials or this kivexa as opposed to truvada?

going to a meet tomorrow but they'll say what i want to hear.

i can say no at anytime and dont start the change for 2 weeks

please guys, help me out

Truvada, in particular the tenofovir it contains, reduces bone density by a very small amount in the first six months of use. Otherwise it isn't linked to bone mass loss except in people who are prone to this anyway. This is what the science says so far, but, clearly, some people think it needs studying further. Fair do's. But do you wanna be a guinea pig right now when you have a combo that's sorted n working?

If your doc has found a smaller than average bone density in you a switch may be a good idea, but, otherwise, personally, I would not especially be bothered right now. 

Kivexa is a good, useful drug, it's a combination of abacavir and 3TC.  There is a risk of a serious allergic reaction at the beginning (5-8% of people get it).  But it's a well-known and effective medicine, at least a good as Truvada. If the switch is part of a study they can do a special test to predict if you are likely to be allergic (and should do really).

The best thing anyone can do to preserve bone mass is, er, stop smoking and do some weights.
