my partner just got diagnosed with hiv

My partner of 4 years just got diagnosed with hiv 3 days ago. We live in Mexico, are both foreigners, and since we work here, we are affiliated with the local Social Security system.

While his first reaction has been dramatic, we have been able to discuss the matter somewhat, and upon consultation at the local private hospital, he has already started medication (Kaletra + Combivir), which he started last night. We still do not know his VL or TD4 levels, as it takes about 3 weeks to get the results back, but the doctors suggested to treat him right away, which he agreed to.

Since we have never had to deal with the Mexican Social Security system before, we have done everything through private clinics, and paid the relatively high price of private care. I found out yesterday, that in fact, all of his treatment can be covered by the Social Security, as long as he enter the National Coinsida program, which we will do this week. At least now the financial burden of the meds is off his shoulders.

In the meantime I have tested negative, pending a repeat test in 3 months (although, since we have not had unsafe relations, it is just a protocol).

I found this forum while browsing the net, and find it an incredible source of information and comfort.

This is not my first contact with HIV as my twin tested hiv+ in 1992, went through all the first treatments erratically, dropped them, restarted them, etc. for a long time, was hospitalized, made it through, and finally earlier this year passed away, but not because of hiv but due to a fatal car accident, otherwise he would be still around.. With my brother I learned over the years how much has changed in the world of hiv/aids and how much can actually be done in order to "maintain" a relatively healthy/controlled life.

I am not familiar with the Combivir-Kelatra combo and am wondering if some supplements are recommended to make sure his trygs and cholesterol stay at bay. Or if there are some dietary restrictions he should be aware of.

It's always good to ask the treating doctor whatever questions you or your partner may have. You will also find a wealth of experience and support here. But learning to ask your/his doctor questions is a part of building a relationship that is essential to staying well.

Your partner is very new to living with HIV. That means he may have a whole range of changing and shifting feelings. Keep talking with each other. That's how you can maintain intimacy.
