Meningitis outbreak among HIV infected men in NYC
« on: September 28, 2012, 12:29:42 am »
There is a meningitis outbreak in NYC among HIV infected men.   Pay attention to the symptoms and go to the er if you suspect you are infected.

http://www.examiner.com/article/meningococcal-meningitis-outbreak-seen-hiv-infected-men-new-york-city

Meningococcal meningitis is caused by the bacterium, Neisseria meningitidis, which causes the most severe form of bacterial meningitis. Meningitis is an infection of the membranes covering the brain and spinal cord. It can also be found in the bloodstream. This particular type of meningitis is very severe and can result in death if not treated promptly. Even in cases where treatment has been given, the fatality rate is around 15%.

The symptoms of bacterial meningitis are sudden, with fever, stiff neck, body aches and headaches. As the disease progresses other symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, photophobia and seizures. A petechial rash seen on the trunk and lower extremities, bleeding complications, multi-organ failures and shock are usually final signs. This disease has the ability to kill within hours of getting it.

Meningitis outbreak among HIV-positive men reported in NYC
« Reply #2 on: September 29, 2012, 12:52:08 pm »
(CBS/AP) A deadly cluster of bacterial meningitis has erupted among HIV-infected gay men in New York City. It's left one person dead in the last month and another in critical condition. The city's health department on Thursday alerted local doctors about the outbreak. It includes a dozen cases in the last two years. But it seems to have accelerated with four cases in the last four weeks. Of the 12 total cases, four died.

The new cases are spread across several boroughs of New York City and affect men ages 31 to 42 years old, the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene said in a statement. Investigators are trying to find out how the infection spread. People the men were in close contact have been treated with antibiotics. Bacterial meningitis can cause swelling of the membranes covering the brain and spinal cord. The disease is rare, but people with HIV-weakened immune systems are more susceptible. People with HIV are also more likely to die from the infection, according to the health department.

This disease is spread by prolonged close contact with nose or throat discharges from an infected person. Examples of prolonged contact include living in the same household, or activities including kissing and sexual contact.

Drew, Bugsie beat you to it and already posted a thread about meningitis, so I merged them.

Isn't there a meningitis vaccine out these days?

Um, I just read Drew's second link and discovered there is a vaccine, but that we don't necessarily need to get it. I wonder why they don't seem to be encouraging poz people in NYC to get it?

Quote

Who should get vaccinated?

Routine meningococcal vaccination is recommended for adolescents and unvaccinated freshman living in college dormitories. Persons at high risk of infection, such as those people without a spleen or with terminal complement deficiency, should also be vaccinated. Persons with HIV infection are not routinely recommended to be vaccinated unless they have some other risk factor present.

Please consult a physician if you are concerned that you might be at risk for disease and  have questions about whether to be vaccinated.

There has been a vacine for bacterial meningits for a long time now, but none for viral or fungal.

I questioned my doctor about this new form because of my history and he didn't see the need.  I don't fall within the risk group.  Having controlled HIV doesn't play a role.

AIDSmeds has an article out yesterday.  And the following was posted to the NYC SIN list yesterday.

HEALTH DEPARTMENT RECOMMENDS VACCINATION FOR HIV-POSITIVE MEN AT HIGH RISK OF MENINGITIS

Free vaccinations available beginning Friday, October 5 for people who cannot get vaccine from their health care provider

October 4, 2012 – The Health Department issued recommendations today for vaccinating against invasive meningococcal disease – commonly known as meningitis – after a spike of cases reported over the past five weeks. The Department is advising vaccinations for any man who is HIV positive and has had intimate contact with another man that he met through a website, digital application ("App"), or at a bar or party since September 1, 2012. Vaccine will be available starting Friday at medical facilities throughout the city for men who meet these criteria but who cannot obtain it from their HIV care providers.
The outbreak of invasive meningococcal disease among HIV-positive men in New York City is completely unrelated to the outbreak of meningitis in several states that is caused by a contaminated medication.
Vaccination prevents but does not treat current infection. Common symptoms of meningitis are high fever, headache, stiff neck, and rash that develop rapidly upon onset. Symptoms may occur 2 to 10 days after exposure, but usually within 5 days. People who are HIV-positive and who experience these symptoms should seek medical care immediately.
Because the vaccine is best given in the context of regular medical care for HIV infection, people should first check with the medical care provider that treats them for HIV infection to ask if they have the vaccine. If the medical provider does not have the vaccine, people should visit one of the HIV clinics in select New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation sites listed below. New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation clinics will waive their co-pay requirements for two months for people who have insurance. The Health Department's clinics will also be able to administer the vaccine for those people who cannot obtain vaccine from their medical providers or a New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation clinic. Locations are listed here. Individuals who meet some, but not all, of the criteria are advised to discuss their need for vaccination with their medical provider.
Vaccine locations at select HIV clinics in Health and Hospitals Corporation sites:
 Bronx
 Jacobi Medical Center
Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center
 Brooklyn
 Coney Island Hospital
 Kings County Hospital Center
Woodhull Medical and Mental Health Center
 Manhattan
 Bellevue Hospital Center
 Harlem Hospital Center
 Queens
 Elmhurst Hospital Center
 Queens Hospital Center

To find an HIV care provider or location to get a vaccine call 311. For more information search "Meningitis" at www.nyc.gov.

That is a pretty broad category! I thought this was as rare as swine-flu...but I guess not?

Thats not good.  Everything seems to happen in New York.    I know the city is a melting pot of folks, but i'm glad that I don't live there.  if you built a list of weird things that have happened in that city since sept 11 2001 , it would be oddly amazing.

The metropolitan NYC area population of NYC is 22 million. That's not just the size of a state, it's larger than all but two states. In fact, it's not far off from the amount in Texas. Of course a lot things are going to seem to happen there. Having lived there for 15 years you don't really notice it (with the exception of 9/11 of course).

Plus the people are much less annoying in NYC than anywhere else.

yeah that is true ,  my co-worker is from NYC, he tells me the same thing.  he always tells me i couldn't possibly understand NY since i'm a redneck from Texas. we joke with each other a lot about where we are from, but i do love to hear all of his stories about growing up in NY.  He grew up in the studio 54 days and the stories are intersting to hear for sure.
