Latest results ("My Way" works again)
« on: June 11, 2007, 08:50:59 am »
So it's been two months since I last saw my doctor as he thought the longer gap between appointments would show even more immune system damage and I would see the error of my ways and jump back on the treatment bandwagon. What he didn't realise is that Emma thrives on a challenge and was determined to prove him wrong.

So operation "My Way" began as soon as I left the clinic back in April and today was D-Day when the results came in. I have been perfectly well over the last couple of months so I was hoping that this might have been reflected in the numbers but experience tells me that this is often not the case!

Well initially the results didn't come in - someone somewhere in a lab decided that because I wasn't on treatment they didn't need to do all the tests - mini meltdown by me on hearing this news, bollocking of manager by my doctor and after an hour's wait the results were phoned through.

So my t-cells have gone up slightly from 177 to 210 (% from 12.2 to 12.6) and viral load has gone down from 24,022 to 16,807 - nothing statistically significant I know but psychologically just getting back over 200 is a boost to doing it "my way".

And what this all means is I get to add at least another two months to my ever extending time off meds - yippee!

One very relieved and happy person in London.  :)

WooHoo Emma!

I know those results maybe "statistically IN-significant" but anytime the numbers are moving in the "right" direction is a time to be happy. :D Now don't forget to make those changes to your signature line. ;)

I don't know your history with treatment.  I presume it was a very bad experience for you.  If it isn't too personal, could you post more regarding your reasons that you prefer not to treat?

I am glad you are doing well with your current lack of treatment and hope that you continue to be blessed with good health.

A quick update for Fondeveau and anyone else who might be wondering why I'm choosing not to be on treatment.

Having been infected for over 16 years now I know my body extremely well and I have been blessed with excellent health throughout most of this time except a minor blip in 2003 when I got pneumonia and shingles.

I initially tried treatment in 1999 - Abacavir, Lamivudine (3TC) and Sustiva (efavirenz) was my first cocktail. Within 5 days I was hospitalised due to the allergic reaction to Abacavir. That got dropped and d4T replaced it but after 4 months of dealing with side effects I quit because for me it will always be more about quality of life than quantity.

I went back on a third cocktail in April 2004 - Lamivudine (3TC); Tenofovir; Atazanavir; and Ritonavir because my t-cells had spent a year under 200 and doc was concerned that they were falling at a faster rate.

Side effects were not as severe this time around but they still impacted on my quality of life. After 18 months I found my adherence to the meds was getting less and less so I  chose to stop them all. I only went back on septrin earlier this year when my t-cells went below 200 and I will continue to take that three times a week.

I have personally chosen not to go back on HIV treatment because at the moment my quality of life could not be any better and I am not prepared to compromise that when I currently have no health problems whatsoever except a low cd4 count. If or when that changes then I may adjust my thinking accordingly.

Hope that explains where I'm coming from.

And now I'm off to pour myself a glass of champagne to have with my strawberries as a mini-celebration at my improving numbers - your good health everyone!

Emma

Quality over quantity is my biggest motivator for also not taking treatment, and so far it is working. I am so happy that it is working for someone else as well, inspirational fuel for my decision. Thank you for sharing.

Congrats on those numbers. I always believe you should do what's best for you. My ID doc is quick to tell me he's just a doctor, not God which sometimes we expect them to know everything when no one knows you better than you. Keep up the good work..

Hey Emma

Congratulations on the great results and another two months med free. Operation "My Way" made me laugh out loud. This is for you:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=sEbgB6X6S5c

Although, listening to the lyrics I'm not sure it's really very appropriate to your excellent health and determination. Calling pneumonia and shingles a "minor blip" is a measure of that.

All the best,

M.
