New Test Results - Good Surprise
« on: January 27, 2015, 10:06:09 pm »
Today, I had my six months checkup with my ID doctor and received my lab results.  I have been consistently undetectable and had a high CD4 count, but this one was significantly higher than ever before =  1366.  I had only been over 900 once and have hovered around between 700 - 800 which of course is good.  I imagine this was an "outlier" but it was nice news.

I am in the beginning of adapting to Diabetes Type 2 (confirmed in October.)  So far I am only on metformin and have an a1c of 6.6.  This is the new challenge to exercise and improve my diet immediately...not to mention lose 20-25 pounds.  I am also having testosterone levels checked (something I have never done before.)

I have been fortunate to have tolerated Atripla so well for so many years.  Odd to me that something like diabetes would become more challenging.  Curious if any of you are dealing with both type 2 diabetes and controlled HIV and what steps are working for you.

Hi Gary. I have type 2 and am on insulin … I tried my best to control my diabetes with diet alone but I eventually ended up on insulin. Diabetes is a challenge, there is no getting around that so the best advice I can give you is to not get into the habit of beating yourself up if you are not the perfect diabetes patient. Its almost impossible to live in the modern world because as soon as you leave the house and have eat out it suddenly hits you how hard it’s going to be .

I try to watch what I eat but I have put the thought of I can control this with diet alone thing to rest and do my best to eat right and use the medications to my advantage when I don’t . I hope this little bit of practical advice helps, you are going to deal with this for a long time so go easy on yourself and use all the tools at your disposal such as diet and exercise and medication and you will develop good habits out of the gate and not have allot of bad ones to break.

Great numbers Gary, if you are feeling generous I'll take a couple of hundred, I'm struggling to get past 290, but I'm U/D so I'm pretty happy with that.

As for the Type 2 I can't give you any more info than Jeff has already given you, but I'm sure in time you will find a routine that will suit you and keep you on the right track.

I had a ridiculously high CD4 count once which was obviously a fluke but it is nice to pretend.  I can't address the diabetes issue but want to send some positive thoughts your way.

Have you considered ditching Atripla for something more Diabetes and Lipid friendly?

Hi Gary,

My doc told me not to freak out much about the CD4 value in numbers but to take a closer look at the %. For what I can recall, as long as it is higher than 35%, your immune system is responding normally. Based on your lab results, you are more than OK. Congrats!

Those are awesome numbers, Gary. Way to go, bud.

The type 2 is definitely challenging. There is just so much bad food available it's really challenging to shape a good intake sez this guy who just finished snacking on a chocolate donut. Damn!

Keep going. KEEP GOING.

Best,

Andy

Great numbers Gary! No advice on the diabetes but I have faith in you being able to face this.
