TB Testing

When I was first diagnosed HIV+ I was given a PPD test for TB which was non reactive. A few years later I was given a quantiferon test which was reactive. The followup chest x-ray was clear and we began discussion of treatment for latent TB. I stalled and a year and later asked for another test...This time it was negative. I then participated in a clinical trial studying the interaction of a TB med with patients on Atripla. Their screening included another quantiferon test and a chest x-ray...both negative. Six months later as part of my routine labs I tested positive again on the quantiferon test... Diagnosed HIV+ 5 years ago, on atripla, consistently undetectable, CD4 over 1000. They say its not worth testing anymore, yet offered me the antibiotic regimen...I've declined of course...Ver frustrating...I don't want to do a 6 month regimen of INH...Any insights fro anyone here?

Hi...

I cannot help you much because I also need some help, I´m in the same situation, have high CD 4 but my last PPD went back positive (last two years it was not reactive).  X-ray went back good.  I´m now in Canada but come from a endemic country.  It is more tan possible that I´ll have to start the treatment.  For now I´m waiting some more test results to exclude completely it is active...

Anyway, I think it is important to start early, in latente phase, when tuberculosis is sleeping, to clear it completely.  Once you have it, you are exposed to develop active tuberculose in any moment and particularly if your defenses decrease for any reason.  For sure, it is a desease that is very slow to develop, but for my onw, I would not play with it...  Personnally I´m thinking about it...

In my case, I also think this sucks and I feel resigned.  I you appreciate to read any feedback in regard to people that used this kind of antibiotic for so long...

My issue is that I'm not convinced I'm infected...I think the test is faulty...I've been tested numerous times and even my docs aren't sure. In fact they are starting to think the test is faulty. I don't want to go on 6-9 month of antibiotics

I thought I read the blood test did have an issue with false-positives??  I will have to look for those articles again.  It seems it was a problem during a certain time frame, due to bad batches. 

I do remember this article that says blood tests should not be used, due to errors in false-negatives as well as false-positives.
