I remember one of my favorite memories is being on the beach on Tybee Island. A man had a big, electronic telescope set up on the pier. He was letting people look. I was amazed I could see Saturn with all the rings. I could also see Jupiter and the iconic huge storm.
I have been meaning to google why the image was black and white. Both Saturn and Jupiter were not in color. I suppose color doesn't travel to earth telescopes? Or, his electronic telescope just didn't show color?
I love watching astronomy programs on Discovery. It is very fascinating. It is mind-boggling how huge space is. I find it fascinating how our solar system in on one of the spirals of our universe. And, I have no doubt there is life out there and it is probably abundant.

Considering there 100-400 billion stars in our galaxy and possibly as many as 500 billion galaxies in our universe1 and that the universe is estimated to be 13.8 billion years old, a human lifespan on this tiny speck is both precious and inconsequential.
1There may be other universes.

Yes but life could have existed 100 million years ago, or it won't exist for another 100 million years. Once you start to factor time into the equation, and then take into account the shear size of the universe, or parallel universes then things start to get interesting. It really puts things like god, religion, the human race, technology into perspective.
When I was a kid I sat down and tried to sketch out the universe. I tried to factor in time and space. A fruitless endeavor. You quickly realize the human race will exist for a very short period of time in the grand scheme of things.

Yes, and the chances of humans actually interacting with any intelligent life that may exist are extremely unlikely given time, distance and the energy required to move mass. It is estimated that to send an unmanned probe to the closest star would require at least the energy of the entire world in a year. Then, even if the theoretical probe could travel at 100 times the speed of the current fastest man-made probe, it would take at 800 years to get there. Communicating with the probe would be extremely difficult and the round-trip delay time would be 8 years. So unless aliens have discovered some means of circumventing the known physical laws of the universe, we are probably on our own.
BTW, it has been 41 years since humans went to the moon and we are not even close to a manned mission to Mars.

The best guess of the age of the universe is in billions of years. (not sure really how we humans would even have the gumption to even guess. ???.) Humans have only been here on Earth for thousands of years. Less than a blink of an eye. Time and space seem infinite to me. Hard to wrap my head around it. :)

While we might seem dwarfed by some of our plant neighbours, that's nothing compared to the largest object yet discovered in the universe. In January, a Large Quasar Group was found that spans 4 billion light years at it widest point. It is so large, that it is confounding scientists, because it challenges modern theory, in that it should not exist, yet it does.

All of our Hopes, Dreams, Loves, and my two ex-wives are on that tiny blue dot. It's kind of scary and probably the reason for global climate change.
