Dewayne Woods testimony of being healed of HIV. I can appreciate a persons faith, but I question his original diagnose of HIV. What are your thoughts on this.

The first thing I noticed was Brother Dewayne standing up in front of a large crowd of American christians. Now those of you who know me well know that I'm no America basher, but I feel I can assert that there are few things on earth as gullible as an American christian.

Now our good friend Dewayne there is engaged in the time honoured evangelical christian pastime of emptying those people's bank accounts. You can bet that almost everyone of the dumb motherfuckers in that audience tithes like mad to people like Dewayne.

It's gonna get 'em into heaven, don't ya know?

But before those righteous people hand over their hard earned, they expect a miracle. And what's a better miracle than being magically cured of AIDS, the modern day leprosy?

Ya, we have to be sensitive to the beliefs of christians. Quite frankly Mike if you support the teachings in Leviticus, I and II Corinthians, I Timothy and all the other clobber passages in your dirt scripture then you deserve to be insulted.

Prove to me he was positive, and some miracle cured him.

I would have to see the paper work. No one could prove to me he or she has been healed of hiv. Each to their own faith, but healing is a little much for me.

What message does it send out? From where I sit, one that is dangerous, poisonous and even blasphemous.

It recklessly dismisses giving this ailment the proper medical attention it warrants, from testing to scientifically founded treatment. It further casts a moral shadow of "uncleanliness" on those with the disease in that it suggests that people struggling with HIV infection are not in a suitable standing with God, evident through both becoming infected initially and by remaining infected. It suggests that if one remains infected with this virus, one must simply not be righteous enough, praying long or hard enough or maintaining faith enough to attain healing through the power of belief.

And that last little part is where I declare blasphemy.

Before even making this absurd declaration, this man asserts that he drew some sort of line in the sand with God that if he was going to sing about healing, then he needed to receive some of it in his life first hand. "If I was going to sing about Him being a healer, then I wanted Him to do it." As if God is to be negotiated with or directed in how things are going to play out.

That's a mighty bold position for a true belliever to take with the Almighty, don'tcha think? I seem to recall that that type of proud posturing was the sort of thing that could get an angel booted out of Heaven.

At least it was in the version of the Bible that I read growing up.

But enough of my sermon. It can really be summed up in a word: reprehensible.

I have no problem with Mattys post. It's what he believes,no problemo. He actually asks very good questions.
Questions most thinking and reasonable Christians struggle with everyday of the week, and yet we still continue to believe. I understand the hatred of Christianity by many here.
What I do object to is linking everything that is religious conservative to those who believe or those who are economically conservative. Yes they are linked politically but in no other way.
I believe because I have found life with God unbearable, boring and very pedestrian.

I find this discussion a little funny.

All this talk about the wonderment and disbelief that someone would claim being healed of HIV through the wonders of spirituality (albeit a strict view of what that spirituality consists of) and yet there seems to be an unquestioning and blind acceptance by so many here on the wonderful and healing powers of always having an optimistic outlook.

I never made a statement otherwise. Personally I do see HIV as a virus that doesn't curtail its effects to personal belief systems of any kind.

I often think being optimistic in life when facing a tough situation is like having a fabulous cheerleaders while your own team sucks and you're playing against the world champion!

It may not help you to win but at least the cheerleaders are great to look at, and a funny mascot can keep the laughs coming. So even when the 'game' is going totally against you, losing can at least be more tolerable. And of course good cheerleaders can lift the spirit and a well-cheered team can sometimes win against all odds. Who knows.

But our case in point is so obviously a spin-off of the ex-gay movement and targeting not us, but their own gullible constituents to justify their blind hatred against the sodomites - you know, we're offering a way out of their unfortunate choice of lifestyle that also gives them HIV that is, you know, a form of divine punishment; and praying, you know, is the answer to all world problems!

Personally I think this point is very related to the original article in needing to see oneself (or label others) as either God fearing and saved, or or God hating and damned. Sometimes there are those who just don't believe in God...or needs to ascribe to an optimistic or pessimistic outlook.
