Bessie The Snail
« on: February 06, 2009, 12:17:11 am »

This is one of my two pet snails, Bessie and Angus. I also have five guppies right now. I figured people always show off their cats and dogs, so you guys get to see my quirky pets as always.

They're Golden Mystery Snails and they eat algae wafers and discarded fish flakes that collect around the tank. They are really active, fun little pets.

I don't believe I've ever seen a picture of a snail so up-close.  She's really beautiful.

:)

They're really serene to watch. They actually can move pretty fast when they want to (namely when I throw an algae wafer to the bottom of the tank, they sets them off sliding) but most of the time they attach themselves somewhere comfortable and stay there, on a wall or on a plant.

Of course I have a male and a female (fact, though: most snails are hermaphroditic, just not my species) and they were sort of doing it the other night, and have been on and off for a while now, so I may have eggs eventually.

Love your pets, Jaser.                                                                                   We had some guppies and a couple of those snails but now we are down to 1 guppie.  I think something we spray here kills them, hairspray or window cleaner, they always die. I love watching the snails and a tankful of guppies is fun to watch also. Especially when they have lots of babies.        Cristy

If you want any help figuring out what the problem is, you can give me a rundown of the tank size, food, water purifier, filter, etc, etc and maybe I can tell you what's making them croak. Lmao. Sometimes it's something really simple. Fish are really really fickle.

If everything checks out though, you should have a lid on the tank if you don't already and be careful not to spray anything in their direction and that shouldn't be a problem.

I was asked what was my first pet the other day and when I said snail, you could see the necks snap around. They thought I would say, cat, dog, rabbit, etc.

I had a pet snail when I was 8 years old. Your picture is beautiful and brought back good memories.
