Golden Girl Favorites...
« on: January 20, 2011, 08:20:18 am »
I love the Golden Girls !  They covered some controversial issues in those days.  HIV/ AIDS, Homosexuality, transgender, Suicide, teen pregnancy,  Abortion, homelessness, job loss, etc..

One of my favorite episodes of the Golden Girls, was when Dorothy had been sick for a while, She had been to several different doctors and specialist and the doctors were just dismissing her and her illness.

She finally went to a doctor that diagnosed her with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.  In celebration of her "new disease" , she takes the the girls out for dinner, because at least now, she knows she has something.

In this clip ( pt-3) Dorothy has just seen the doctor that dismissed her, sitting at a table, in the restaurant, and decides to confront him , in only the way Dorothy could.  Love it !:

If anyone is having a problem with their doctor not listening to you, take a lesson from  Dorothy:

I used to watch GG six times a day woke up with them, afternoons with them and then I went to bed with them.  Still try to find them but not as easy as it used to be.

What!  You got something against old ladies?  It is funny the OP mentioned the episode where Dorothy is sick.  As I turned on my computer and saw this thread, GG is playing on the TV and that episode is the one that is playing.  Weird!  Maybe you just posted this as it was airing.  My TIVO has learned that I'm gay and records all the gay favs.

Like Wump, I like the condom scene.  I like the scene where Dorothy and Rose follow Blanche to her room where Blanche locks herself in due to going through the change.  Rose says, "She's in there." and Dorothy says, "Really, Columbo."  I always crack up at that.  I know it isn't the funniest thing ever written, but it always strikes me as funny.  I also like the one where Blanche is trying to become a member of the Daughters of the Confederacy, or something like that.  One member learns she comes from both Yanky and Jewish blood and the woman faints.

In the pilot, they had the sterotypical gay male roommate/cook.  Sophia was originally only suppose to appear every once in a while on the show.  Well, NBC got rid of the gay guy for Sophia.  They did have 2 episodes with Blanche's gay brother and another with a lesbian friend, so I guess they made up for it.

Hardly. When it was a hit there were two camps in my crowd in NY - fans and non-fans.

(I was in the non-fan crowd - but mostly because I didn't watch much of any TV for about 15 years. So I converted much later.  Comfort TV for me is older - I Love Lucy, B&W movies.)

I love the episode in one of the early series where they decide to farm mink in their garden shed.

Not sure how they got away with that one.

I am, however, obsessed with both Absolutely Fabulous and Sex and the City (TV series, NOT the movies!)

Oh, and I mostly dislike Will & Grace too!

I like Betty, but then again I was addicted as a young kid to Match Game.  I used to even force neighborhood kids to sit in two rows of three on our front steps and reenact the show -- I was always Gene Rayburn because I made the long magic wand microphone.  Still an impressive TV show full of sexual double-entendres that it's hard to believe this was on TV at the time.

Before Match Game with Gene Raybun, and I date myself, I remember Betty White in Password with her husband Allen Ludden who died many years ago, still quite young, maybe when he was in his 40's.  She has been widowed many years and was said to have particularly been hit hard by his loss, much as George Burns was when Gracie Allen died so young.

Still she is the same age as my mom but is doing better, bless her and she can still deliver a line or two.

Absolutely Fabulous is the absolute bomb.  For some reason, we don't get it here any longer.  I love all the British sit coms.  Are You Being served is just as funny after watching each episode 20 times as it was the first time.

As for Golden Girls, I think many of us secretly wanted Blanche's lifestyle. ;)  Or maybe already lived it?
