I don't understand where his point of view is coming from .... I don't even find any constructive info there.

I agree with his point that there could be more discussion about HIV and HIV treatment and what undetectable means.  Just like there probably isn't enough awareness of post-exposure prophylaxis, let alone pre-exposure....

However, I agree that his point is muddled when he sets up, what IMO are strawmen opponents.  He says there is a lot of shaming and judgement of people who talk about their undetectable status...

But anyway, if its just a call for more knowledge and more discussion, "it's a good thing", as Martha Stewart says.

I think Madbrain would appreciate this article.  For those who don't know, he posted a recent thread here about how Grindr had removed "undetectable" from his profile.  He felt he should be able to let potential dates, fucks, or whatever know he is poz, but undetectable.  He felt this would weed out people not interested in sex/dating with someone poz, while letting others know he is in care and is managing his virus.  He felt it was hypocritical for a hook-up site that has ads for home testing to censor the word.

Grindr obviously felt that word violated their rule about promoting unsafe sex messages.  Some here said they could see how people may feel using that word was an invitation to unsafe sex.  If memory serves, I don't think anyone accused him of that motivation, rather they felt others may see it that way.  He obviously felt people were accusing him of only wanting to use that word, in order to advertise for bareback sex.  I know many just argued it is a private site and they can do what they want, so he just has to deal with that.  And, he can certainly tell anyone he wants he is UD in person or in private messages on Grindr.

Anyway, this article reminded me of him, a few lines into the article.  UD was seen as a bad and irresponsible word on one of the biggest dating/hook up sites.

OMG Ted that's a great post.   Puts it into a real context.

Its a messy issue at the very least, but best not to avoid wading wading in.

For example if anyone has any interest in treatment as prevention, undetectable shouldn't be a taboo word.  Even though for many it carries fear, confusion, ambivalence, judgement, for many people hearing it.

I was in college during the beginning and then later, the midlife crisis of "political correctness". I think by the late 90's people believed society was both "fed up with", and "done with" it. Good riddance.

Instead, by the end of Obama's first term, its seemed clear that we are paralyzed as a society by a battle between those with "open minds" and some ease about the play between human commonality and difference, and those who lack empathy, are fixed and militant in their prejudices, contentious about anything that challenges their personal world view.

________

(I think one of the things going on with smart phone censorship is that the manufacturers do not want a whole list of sexual signifier on their phones. The list of stuff censored is long.  Its not necessarily the social network company initiating the censorship, its them responding to the manufacturers demands... )

I don't agree with every aspect of the article but I am still happy this has been published. Among all these BS 'cure' articles lately, it's nice to see there are also articles like this that help to inform the public about HIV.

I'm always surprised how few people even know what 'undetectable' means. It's not like that term is misleading or something...

Yesterday I came out to one of my closest friends. Biologist, PhD candidate. He had not much clue about what it means to be HIV positive today and of course didn't know what undetectable means.

FYI - the French are discussing the meaning of "undetectable" as well.

http://www.minorites.org/index.php/2-la-revue/1490-indetectable-le-sesame-gay.html

Lestrade has been a fierce advocate of safesex for all, including HIV+, including since the new wave of the last 10 years or so of poz-poz bareback.

His column reports rather the opposite phenomena of what "undetectable" means for gays.  He reports a French sex culture that is completely blasé and uninterested in any exchange of information beyond two words, "clean" and "undetectable" - that gays negotiating for sex are content with those two words only, you can be either one, and the sex is good to go.  No more discussions. No discussion how HIV negatives might not be, just believe they are, or other STDS that might render one unclean...  For example.  STFU and let's have sex.  You must be clean or undetectable.  Nobody wants to talk about HIV. Just two magic words.

(PS - its the french use of the word "clean" - not mine.  The french are NOT having a discussion about the import of that word choice... not an issue)

Heh... makes me think of a few jokes (about cleanliness) the British like to trot out about the French at the slightest opportunity.

What cracks me up the most is that like it or not,  people who consider themselves to be historically "British" have an awful lot of French blood in their genealogies. From even before 1066. ::) ;D
