Staph infection in throat
« on: March 04, 2011, 02:46:06 pm »
So, I've been poz since 2005 and on meds and undetectable since 2008.  I thought I had Strep Throat a couple of weeks ago that has since been confirmed as Staph.  The doctor started me off on Cipro at first... 5 days into it, my symptoms were worse, so switched to Amox-Clav 875mg.  I started to get better and was symptom free by day 8 of that antibiotic.  It was at this point that I (in all my wisdom) decided it would be a good idea to party and do some T.  Well, the symptoms started slowly coming back.  I made an appt. with the doctor and in the mean time started taking Amoxicillian 500mg that I had left over from a root canal last summer.  Yesterday is when I went in and he told me it was Staph and he prescribed the same Amoxicillan 500mg that I started taking so that I'd get a full course.  I, obviously, am not going to be partying again anytime soon... and the symptoms are getting better everyday... slowly.  My throat looks back to normal, and although it doesn't feel completely normal when I swallow, it doesn't hurt.  I've never had Staph before.  It seems like some people (my mother) think it's a pretty serious condition that my doctor should be taking more seriously... but she tends to worry.  I know Staph can spread and I have a missing filling in a molar.... but I'm thinking as long as I'm getting better, it's under control.  Should I be more concerned about this?  Also, my doctor (who is gay and an hiv specialist) doesn't think it came necessarily from sex.  Any thoughts or advice from those in the know or those who've had this???

THANKS
Scott

Cipro is a good antibiotic, its really strange your infection did not go away with it.

Amoxiclin/Clav is the treatment from older days, but it still works.

I think they should have made a culture, before starting on AB.

I think the key es to finish your dosage that should be arround 15 days.
I would rather take injections of something stronger than that.
Anyway since you are already with the amoxilin stay with it.
By the way that Clav part of the other medicine, Amoxicilin /Clav makes the amoxilin work stonger and for a longer time. Lets say that it does to amoxilin what Norvir does to the VIH drugs..

Before reading this, I was watching the Today Show from today and they said staph/MRSA was found on 2/3 of the airplane tray tables researchers tested.  I guess staph is just present everywhere and anywhere and already on our bodies waiting for a route inside our bodies?  Anyway, feel better soon.  From what you said, it sounds like you are feeling better every day.

Staph A is pretty nasty stuff, but unless you have extremely drug resistant versions of it and a majorly compromised immune system you should be able to clear it.  I was in the hospital for a while before diagnosis with staph and they had to go through 5 or 6 different antibiotics before I was able to get rid of it.  Vancomycin by IV is what finally did it.  If you're not on an IV antibiotic and the infection is clearing I wouldn't worry about it, because your doctor is not worried.  I would definitely steer clear of the drugs while dealing with an active infection especially Tina because you might miss doses of antibiotic which could be devestating.
