Need Help: Did i catch HIV
« on: August 31, 2014, 10:13:00 pm »
First i want to thank you for this wonderful platform. I respect all the great work you do here. I need your help badly. about 14.5 weeks ago, i was in Portugal and i met a wonderful 24 year old girl. we went out together few times and on the last date she came to my hotel room. We didn't have condoms as we weren't planning anything so we ended up kissing, touching and it progressed to rubbing genitals. Couple of times she tried to put it in but i caught it and didn't let it happen (though i am concern it might have gone in half way if any). I didn't think about it much as i thought it was safe. 2 days ago, I suddenly developed sores in my mouth, sore throat and rash literary all over my body except my face. the rash looks like measles rash but it can't be as i already had it. the sores in my mouth are so bad i can't even eat or drink. My lips are swollen and very very dark purple. All of this developed in a period of 2 days. I saw a doctor and he said it could be a viral infection and ordered few blood work (HIV wasn't one of them). I don't have any fatigue, Diarrhea, i touched my lymph nodes and they don't appear swollen and i don't have flu like symptoms.

I know the ultimate thing to do would be to go for testing, however, don't you think this is an indication that I might have caught it?

I called the girl today, I asked her if she is aware of any disease and she said no. I asked her if she remembers me going inside and she said no. I am still so worried.

Can you please help me with your opinion? Am i exposed? should i be worried?

You can't imagine how much i appreciate your help!!

You have not had a risk for HIV ... rubbing and kissing are not risk factors for HIV . There is not much else to say about your situation other than it was not a risk .

Here's what you need to know in order to avoid hiv infection:

You need to be using condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, every time, no exceptions until such time as you are in a securely monogamous relationship where you have both tested for ALL sexually transmitted infections together.

To agree to have unprotected intercourse is to consent to the possibility of being infected with an STI.Sex without a condom lasts only a matter of minutes, but hiv is forever.

Have a look through the condom and lube links in my signature line so you can use condoms with confidence.

Although you did not have a risk and do not need to test for this specific incident , anyone who is sexually active should be having a full sexual health care check-up, including but not limited to hiv testing, at least once a year and more often if unprotected intercourse occurs.

If you aren't already having regular, routine check-ups, now is the time to start. As long as you make sure condoms are being used for intercourse, you can fully expect your routine hiv tests to return with negative results.

Don't forget to always get checked for all the other sexually transmitted infections as well, because they are MUCH easier to transmit than hiv. Some of the other STIs can be present with no obvious symptoms, so the only way to know for sure is to test.

Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, correctly and consistently, and you will avoid hiv infection. It really is that simple!

Jeff I appreciate your reply. If you can help me with two main concerns i would really appreciate it. first, what if there was partial penetration (as we were rubbing maybe something slipped momentarily.. or maybe my mind is telling me that). The second is, is the time line consistent with when you would expect to see the symptoms?. this has happened 14 weeks ago. many (many) thanks!

We cant get into how many inches are a risk for HIV and the bottom line is if you are unsure and uneasy then go test at 6 weeks past any possible exposure and again at 3 months to confirm the results . A negative test at 12 weeks is conclusive so if you are paranoid go test ... it will be negative from what you shared with us . I might add that no one has ever been infected from kissing and frottage .

Your questions are what if questions and my answers are if you had a risk then go test if not then just put this behind you and move on . We do not discuss symptoms because they are not specific to HIV ... if you are sick go see a doctor and discuss it with them .
