I haven't bathed in five days and my groin is especially ripe right now. What time are you coming over to harvest some dingleberries?

Story: Dad was at an awards ceremony in 1995, having been elected to the Presidency of the Greensboro Civitans. I wasn't there, of course, but Mom was - along with all the other members and wives.

During the dinner presentation, one of the members told a gay joke and everyone laughed. My dad stayed silent until it was his turn to accept the nomination for President.

He got to the podium, took off his Civitan Lapel Pin, and placed it on the lectern. He told the group that he would never be President of an organization that mocked gay people, He said that he was proud of his gay son and he refused to be part of his (my) struggle for acceptance. He gathered his things, and left.

A few days later, the Civitan board members (having had no luck getting him on the phone) came to his house with the amended code of conduct for the Civitans, which specifically included same sex couples and singles, and forbade their discrimination.

Dad wore that Presidential pin, finally. Here' the catch: I weasn't there - no one I knew was there. He didn't have to do that. I never would have known, and never would have judged him. He did this out of his character, out of his fierce love.

"Many people, especially in the gay community, turn to oral sex as a safer alternative in the age of AIDS. And with HIV rates rising, people need to remember that oral sex is safer sex. It's a reasonable alternative."

Thanks for sharing JK . There will be many who read that and think of the kind things their dad did for them , and some will wish they had a dad just like yours .

Wow JK! How wonderful it must be to have a parent in your corner like that! There are many people here who wouldn't have had the strength of character to do that. Actions like that are the ones that bring about change. :)
