From the article cited above...

Out of the 33 subtype A patients, the researchers determined that seven had dementia, or about 24 percent. However, out of the nine patients with subtype D, 8 had dementia, about 89 percent.

I have to wonder if they would get similar results if they did the study again with a larger cohort. The didn't test many, did they, and I have to wonder just how valid their conclusions are. ??? Seems to me that in such a small cohort, it could be coincidence that eight of the nine subtype D people had dementia. I'd be more impressed if it was 800 out of 900, or even 80 out of 90.

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts

Increased risk of dementia depends on subtype ----

what is the sample???

----  people with ADVANCED HIV disease
----  and untreated.....

Its interesting certainly but the post title could raise concerns in people who do not have anything in common with the sample...

Actually, Ann that was sort of my thought too ... why come to such a conclusion with such an extremely small test group.  I was surprised that this was something that came from John Hopkins and wondered if it was part of a larger study that maybe someone else knew of.

It is a study on long untreated HIV+ people in an African country.  A population that merits as much study as any other.  Why wouldn't Hopkins publish it.

"Sacktor, professor of neurology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and a clinician at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, and his colleagues studied 60 HIV-infected patients from a Kampala clinic. All of the subjects had been part of a different study testing the effect of anti-retroviral drugs on cognitive impairment, but had not begun taking the drugs[/color]. After determining each patient's HIV subtype, they performed a battery of neurological and cognitive tests to assess each patient's brain function."

Also, of course, the population would be better off had they had health care! But reality is reality and why can't scientists study it?

Mecch,

Nobody was questioning why the study was done on people in Africa, we were questioning their
conclusion based on such a small amount of people. ::)

Ah I get it, sample size is the problem. OK

I'm totally at a loss to understand how you thought Andy and I were talking about anything else, but, whatever. :) No harm done, unless you count a massive attack of the "wtf???s"
