A little good news
« on: December 27, 2011, 11:01:16 am »
I've eluded a few times to the court battles that have been raging for the last several years.  Dealing with estates, life insurance policies, tuition obligations, representation by proxy and all the fun shit that goes along with it.  It's finally over and settled.  The only people who benefited were the attorneys....imagine that.  I did manage to get awarded a small amount of what we worked for.

I now have the final court order, whereas the other parties can not contest it.  I feel like I can finally move on without that black cloud hanging around.  Sure have learned a lot and totally understand the need for legal protection that is afforded to our straight counterparts.

Think I'll celebrate with a huge glass of white zin and maybe even toke a couple of times just for the joy of it instead of the medicinal side.

wow, I'm sorry to hear that it's taken this long and this many problems to work through what would have been much easier if something as simple as marriage rights were available to all equally.

I'm glad it's over for you and glad you got a little something in the end.  :-*

you got a little something in the end.

I musta missed the bit where he said that was part of his settlement.

Congrats Wolfman!

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts

Enough to buy a decent car perhaps, but not what I should have retained.  Had it been up to his kids, I wouldn't have rec'd a dime.  Just a month before he got sick, Bill purchased a new pick up truck and we paid for it out of our joint account.  It was only titled in his name, and his son came and took the truck before his body was even cold.  I had no legal standing except for legal action.  It was a mad dash brought about by greed.  They pretty much emptied the place while I was still grieving and not staying at the house.  My hatred has turned to pity for them all.  These were kids I viewed as step children and they acted in turn as I was their dad.  His oldest son lived with us for 3 years during highschool and I was there for him, treating him like my old child.  I'll believe in that karma thing when I see bad shit happening for them.

I really hate it when I hear stories like that. Same-sex couples should absolutely be afforded the same protections under the law as different-sex couples. It's criminal.

I suppose you might say that my "congrats" was more over the fact that you've finally gained some measure of closure over this.

I am happy for you that it is now behind you.  It is such a shame that it took what it did to resolve.
Sid and I have spent a ton of money on legal documents to help avoid all that, we even have docs that say we each have final say on what happens to the remains of the other.  It is crazy that we had to do all this -- but I feel better that it is done.  Unfortunately, our house is only in my name because it was purchased with a VA loan.
I have already had "the talk" with my daughter and what is what if I were to pass on before Sid.  She seemed agreeable -- if she pulls any crap I will haunt the hell out of her.   :o

Agreed , the whole thing just makes me SICK, Bob & I both have Life Ins. policies on each other, as well as Medical-Power-of-Attorney, but that's about it, none of our families live anywhere remotely close to us, and they don't really care, I guess that covers the basics , if any one of us should kick-the-bucket  :D
