Broken condom while on period
« on: April 07, 2015, 06:12:59 pm »
Hello,

I have sort of a specific and a very uncomfortable situation on my hands. My girlfriend was raped two months ago. We went through a lot, so I am not going to elaborate further on this topic. The important thing is that she was indeed exposed to potentially infected person. She is yet to be tested, waiting for the three months mark.

We managed to avoid risky behavior, until recently we did get intimate again (with a condom, of course). I know there should have been alarm bells ringing in my head at that point, since protection is not 100 %, but her embracing her sexuality once again seemed like such a big deal after the trauma she went through that I went with it.

That first intercourse went well, no accidents there. Then her period came and we attempted to recreate the sensation. After about two minutes, I notice the condom broke, partially exposing the head of my penis. It was not very bloody, there was a bit of dried blood on the head, but it really freaked us out.

I know I've made a horrible mistake attempting this. Now, she is about to be tested soon and I will visit the health center tomorrow. However, I have spent last hours googling about HIV and I am losing my mind a bit, so I'd like to know your prognosis.

If she was infected, the chance of her passing it to me are very high, since blood was present, aren't they? Do you think I should insist the doctors to prescribe me Truvada, since I heard it can reduce the risk if taken sooner than 72 hours after the act? I am from a Central European country and the price of the medication is almost too much for someone of my modest lifestyle - but I figure a small chance of health is worth all the money Ive got.

I am sorry if the question doesnt make too much sense or if I am misinformed in any way - it has been very surreal day for me.

Thank you for your answers.

Testing guidelines are to test at 6 weeks past any incident and then at 12 weeks to confirm the results.  Your girlfriend can test at any time for HIV and she does not need to wait for 3 months, before being tested.

The broken condom represents a risk, but only after the condom broke.  The risk is also less for the insertive partner.  What I recommend is your girlfriend get tested for HIV immediately and then, based on her result, you can decide if PEP is warranted.

Joe
