What's the Definition of Long Term Non-Progessor?
« on: February 07, 2008, 11:14:07 pm »
So after last month's set of labs my doc said I could only go every 6 months, as the numbers are relatively stable over two years.  Dare I hope I'm a long term non-progessor?  I thought you had to have a low, low viral load for that?

Individuals who are infected with HIV, but show no signs of disease progression for over 12 years and remain asymptomatic are classified as Long Term Non-Progressors (LTNP).

Just to add to what Iggy said, LTNP's also are not any any HAART medications.

Some definitions put the time frame anywhere over 7 years. There are a number of LTNP's here at the Forums.

Another subset of those with HIV and somewhat similar are people called "Elite Controllers". The time frame for these people is above 1 year or more. They also have some distinct traits.

Here's a link to that study
http://www.massgeneral.org/aids/hiv_elite_controllers.asp

There are also several people here at the Forums who are elite controllers and are enrolled in this study, myself included.

Wishing you all the best  :D
Paul

Oh :( doesn't look like I'm either a LTNP or an elite controller.  Oh well.

To add variables to the mix, I'm well under 7 years and have been in the MGH study for two years as well as studies at NIH as an LTNP in the viremic controller category.

I'm right at 7 years and have been in the MGH study for 1.5 years as a viremic controller.

NG,

It's not a contest, don't fret.  Your system does seem to be harmonizing -- what is this, an a capella group or Newfoundland? -- with the hivvies, so you may enjoy more years without meds and get the LTNP label, complete with secret handshake and festiva attire, in time.

I'm one of the freaks, too, as my signature indicates; and I can play pout quite well over being 'just viremic,' as opposed to 'elite'.... like, don't they know who I am???!!!  But, seriously, at least my body is tough enough to handle a barely detectable viral load  ;D  I also add yet another dimension to the LTNP madness, having spent 7 years on various ART combos, after choosing denial as my treatment option for the first 15 years with my bugs.

Namaste,
David

I'm curious. I am a viremic controller. Other than  when I had blood drawn when I was sick  in the hopes the VL was high enough to get a genotype/resistance test etc( it was 2k) I have been between undectable and  a 464vl. A year after diagnosis I had 1186 CD4s.  Have other controllers  lost great numbers of CD4s? Seen a slow decline? Stayed steady mostly?
If someone tells you  potential consequences of a behavior  it  doesn't  mean they jude you or mit    they may just give a shit about you
