Undetectable with no meds
« on: March 17, 2007, 03:09:29 pm »
Hey everyone it's been a while since I have been on here but couldn't stay away and needed some sense of understanding.  Has anyone here ever heard of your cd-4's going up and your viral load going down 2 undetectable without being on meds?  Am I just extremely healthy or could it be something else any ideas?  Any info on this would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks one and all.

Yes, I have heard of that.  You could be what some people call a long term non-progressor.  Which means your body is able to stave off the virus on it's on.  Consider yourself lucky.

Oh............and by the way....................Damn!  You are FINE!

It happens.  Not often.  I think the statistic I read was less than 1%.  Sometimes it stays that way forever.  I hope you are one of those whose body figured out what to do and whammed the virus on its own.  Heres to your good health and undetetectable VL for a long long time.

In the past I haven't really taken care of myself... Don't take supplements.  As of today though it's been 31 days without a drink and 48 hours without a cig.  I really would like 2 try and live a healthier life style and not take 4 granted this wonderful life I have been given.

Purp, it's great to read that you are one of the very lucky ones who's doing so phenomenally without meds.

Taking care of your health with good nutrition, exercise, moderation regarding drinking and giving up smoking can only have more plus benefits for you. Just make sure you continue to have your doctor monitor your numbers regularly and here's wishing they continue on in the same healthy way.

Cheers,
Andy Velez

JAG, I hope you are a LTNP (Long-Term Non-Progressor.) I may be one as well, but from what I’ve read the defining period is 10 years from diagnosis.  I’m in year 7. I’ve always had a cd4 count around 700, except for one time it was 476, and my viral load has bounced between undetectable and 3000 (currently 87, which, ironically, is the same as my first labs in 2000.)

I try to eat well, and since being diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome, I’ve greatly improved my dietary habits in the last two years. I try to eat whole grain bread products, and eat more fish and less red meat, basically eat what Jesus would eat  :D however I drink my wine and beer and am still smoking—but am seriously thinking about quitting, especially since my smokes here in Texas are now close to 7 bucks a pack…

If your labs continue this trend, you might want to consider volunteering for clinical trials/studies. There’s theories that the secret to fighting HIV lies in those whose bodies are keeping the virus in check...bodies like yours and mine.

Best,

Creighton

Hey JAG

That's wonderful  news about your numbers  ;D

As you've read here in replies, your situation is not totally unique but indeed quite unusual. There are folks here at the Forums who are varibly termed Long Term Non Progressors ( LTNP's ) , viremic controllers and 'elite controllers', each of which has a different definition. It seems as though you may be one of these. Some people here at the Forums who are included in this group include, Basquo, Bobino, Emeraldise, Zephyr, Bear60, Oaktree, BizarreTwist and myself.

It is estimated by some researchers that folks like us make up about .3 of 1% of individuals who test positive for HIV or about 1,000 people in the USA. It would obviously be your great fortune and a blessing if you are one of these folks.

There may be studies that you might qualify to particpate in and are in various locations around the USA. I can give you some info on these if you're interested.

I myself don't smoke, though have smoked a fair bit of pot in my time. I drink wine and an occasional beer. I eat very healthy food prepared from scratch ( I'm a chef) and get a fair amount of exercise (walking and swimming).

Welcome to the Forums !! I hope to see more of you.

in Peace and Love
Paul

Hey

Congrats on doing so well off meds. Just out of interest, how long did it take you to get to an undetectable viral load? That goes for all the LTNPs on here - were you ever detectable? Or did you just test positive with a VL <50 or 400?

Matt.

Ok now I don't know weather 2 be mad, or glad.  I just called 2 get my results from march 7th.  It was on the 7th that I was told that my viral load was undetectable from my test on Sept. 13th 06.   Well come 2 find out that my viral load wasn't undetectable it was 32,800.  I started questioning the lady on the phone about my other results and found out I have never known what my correct numbers were.  So as of today here's what they tell me.
06/06 cd4-538  vl-155,000
09/06 cd4-680  vl-32,800  40%
03/07 cd4-560  vl-16,400  40%

I don't know if I should be upset or worried that my doctor looked at my chart which said my viral load was 32,800 and told me that it was undetectable.  Overall from what I understand my numbers are good either way so I'm not triping on the numbers themselves I'm triping on the fact that out of my first 3 tests I have gotten conflicting results on 2 of them.  Doesn't give me the greatest sense of trust in my doctors.

Well it's a bit concerning that the doctor said "undetectable" if those were the numbers. I think you should ask for the paperwork so that you can look by yourself, make sure that they have the names right, etc etc, and ask for a review of what your doctor "thought" were the results, what's on your file, etc etc. it's important for your future!!

Those are good numbers anyway, so despite the stab in the back it's good that this was resolved soon enough so they'd be so low you'd have to go on meds on top of this.

Still, you need to get this problem straighten out!!

I'd have a nice chat with the doc on my next visit, as well. The #'s are still very good, and you're body's doing a good job lowering the VL on it's own.  ( I'm STILL a little jealous~) ;)

Hey Jag!

Your numbers are still really good. One thing you might want to do is ask for a copy of all your labs. Hubby's Dr sends a copy of all of his labs to us in the mail. I keep them in a notebook. Its nice to compare them to get an idea of how hes doing. I also use the tools here and graph them so I can compare them here too.

AWW Shit JAG,

Here I was, all enjoying the fact that you might have the joy of being a LTPN, which more than a few of us have been at one time, and then you go and tell us the doctor is dreaming.  Well, not so bad though, the numbers you have are not that far from a healthy non-HIV+ person.

I wouldn't go back on any of the changes you have made, but still, you have a long way to go before you have to worry.

Hey JAG,

I was absolutely delighted to see your ever-so-handsome face back on the forums again. (Seems I remember a shirtless photo, or maybe that was my overly fertile imagination  ;)  )

Sorry for the confusion caused by the doc's undetectable statement, but your numbers are looking great. I note the CD4 is steady and the viral load decreasing, which is something to cheer about.

Hang in there and don't be absent for so long. I enjoy hearing from you.

HUGS,
