LOL... just ran into my cute landlord and told him I had been shoveling snow and would continue to do so if he took it easy on rent raises -- he seemed amenable. Plus I will vacuum the lobby and common area staircases monthly.

I'd say that my rent for the size of it and neighborhood is already at a minimum $200 below market rates so all in all not a bad deal. I've lived here 8 years which is the longest I've ever lived in one place since moving out of my parent's home.

I've lived here 8 years also, this month, in this front apartment for, I believe almost 4 years, prior to this I lived in the studio in the back.  My landlord has never raised the rent; when I lost section 8 when going back to work, he even reduced it a bit.  I feel very fortunate.

And he never loses the rent check, and also regularly pays the tenant who shovels the snow.

One thing about my rent and any increases, I live in one of two "quickly gentrifying hipster neighborhoods" in the city, neighborhoods that aren't in Center City (what they call the downtown area) but adjoin it so it's easy commuting (10-15 minutes on subway), or like more and more young people do is bicycle/scooter to work.

When I first moved here it was only beginning to gentrify plus my landlord had just bought the building. Per public records he paid a measly $380,000 for a 4,710 sq. ft building with six units in 2004. One block south, at half that square footage, just sold for $465,000 last month so I'm sure my building would easily get double what he paid. Not bad for less than a decade in the middle of "The Great Recession" now is it? Then again I had two friends that were also my landlords that bought a Brooklyn rowhouse in 1995 for ~$350,000 and sold it in seven years for $1.27 million (and it still needed major work done on it).

So anyway, I live in fear that I will get priced out of this apartment and in my physical shape moving out of a 4th floor apartment will be mentally traumatizing even if I hire movers (at considerable expense). Anytime I have moved my physical health has suffered because my anxiety levels skyrocket and I have trouble eating.

Yes - Philadelphia is growing. In particular "East Passyunk". I don't fancy Roxborough myself so it's Savannah for now.

Well darling, that is my turf you know. I'd say Northern Liberties is even more gentrified, higher end yuppies and the hipsters have been pushed out to Fishtown. For some reason I never venture up there but I guess when the weather warms up I shall go exploring.

Corbin, KY.  Thats about 2 hours from here off I-75.  Colonel Sanders birthplace.  Beautiful area in the mountains.  Well, hills.  Not sure you're technically in the mountains there.  It was some of the best fall color I've ever seen.

Dan,

Having grown up in SE Minnesota I can relate. Connecticut is subtropical in comparison but we still can get a TON of snow. This was last winter and also 2 winters before that. I can tolerate the snow easier than the cold.

I love it! When I lived on the gulf shore in Texas, we still complained about the mosquitoes, occasional Hurricanes and the rampant summer sweat season, so I guess nothing will make me happy ! Still, my eye teeth for a houseboy with a shovel.

So it's official -- NOAA just put up Winter Storm Watches and Warnings for the Northeast - Thursday 2 January 6PM -  Friday 10AM. I am on the southern side so they're predicting only 3-7", but that's up from yesterday's predictions by forecasters so... and winds of 25mph with higher gusts of 35mph, followed Saturday early morning with lows of 5F, which means even lower wind chill factors.

100 miles north in the Poconos they expect up to 10 inches of snow, still less than East Haddam way up in the mountains. LOL. Can't wait for mitchypoo to LIVE REPORT that overnight low of -9 °F with blustery winds.

ps: chance of more snow on Sunday!

The prize thus far goes to le_liseur.

Looks like we will get 8" of powder. Nice and light but shoveling in below zero weather is brutal with the winds. Brrrr....

My Minnesota roots really don't help much at this point but I DO remember temps of -20 F without the wind chill as a kid. The low here on Friday here in CT will be near a record low. :(

Sunday night, rain. Go figure. ???

NOAA official update #3 just released: Area of 6+ inches snowfall has expanded further south and east. Amounts to the west of Philadelphia have decreased a little.

Oddly I'm right on the dividing line now so I suppose I can span from 4" - 8"; this is the third time they've raised the totals so I'm going with 10" :) I always prefer 10 inches anyway, preferably with a wide girth.

Still a Saturday morning low of 6F for the city center, but wind chill of -2F 7:00AM Friday. I am currently doing laundry and prepping my duvet!

ps: Mitchypoo's getting 12-16" regardless of what NOAA says which is still only at 6-10" -- ain't no way you're getting away with something similar to down here.

Oh, and check out this simulation of the upcoming storm -- sure looks worse than 4-6" to me but what do I know?

I just read on huff post that the difference between the hottest place in America ( Key west)  and the coldest place in America ( international falls Minnesota)  was 115  degree difference.

wonder how they figured that. if it were the extreme highs and lows used the difference would be much greater. hmmm...
