A fashion fad you wouldn't repeat
« on: February 26, 2008, 08:47:01 pm »
Today ,as I was doing laps bored out of my mind and freezing my ass off, I was thinking of all the fads I went through growing up.  I would say my worst was punk-ish.  I remember this one outfit I used to wear all the time,  I had fluorescent bright pink converse high tops, with these capri type jean pants that had pockets that started mid thigh and went down to my shins that were stone washed a lighter color than the rest of the pants, a fluorescent pink or green sleeveless v-neck sweater (EEEwwwww) white t-shirt underneath, tons and tons of those fluorescent rubber bracelets up both arms and big bright earrings. My hair was about 4 to 5 inches on the top and spiky in a Tina Turner kinda way and short in the back.  How I got my hair to do this I can't remember, I must of used a whole bottle of glue spray everyday.  I have very fine, straight hair that won't even hold a perm.  I did get voted best hair in the yearbook that year.  LOL That is one good thing that happened when my mothers house burned, we lost all the pics of the idiotic ways I used to dress.  ;D
I would definately wear the converse again toned down but you couldn't get me to touch anything fluorescent unless I was working as a crossing guard.
Anybody else have one they can laugh about?

I was in a punk kind of stage for a minute. I was sporting more of the Grace Jones cut and definitely wouldn't wear anything but black. I was also wearing the combat boots and those same plastic bracelets but mine were black. I think I was lusting after Billy Idol back then... ;D

Billy Idol is an admirable character to lust after.

The only fashion trend I think I was ever 'into' was when wearing those old (kind of) t-shirts that had 3/4 sleeves.  Most concert ones.  I can't remember any others.  I've always kind of worn whatever I wanted to.

The fad with the jeans hanging off your ass today is stupid as hell to me too. The last thing I want to see is someone's underwear or makes me think someone shitted on themselves...*LOL*

We're actually going to an 80's party breast cancer benefit Saturday night... and I've been trying to figure out what to wear.  This thread is perfectly timed!  :)

If only I'd saved all that crap.

Wishful - you're SO right... I walked into target at lunch lookin for those leggings with no feet and realized to my horror that the 80's are SO back.  bright neon belts, neon vintage tee's.  I was so sure the 80's would be THE decade that didn't make a comeback

Queen - not quite sure what I'm gonna wear yet.  Although Target had lots of things, I'm not about spending the money to buy a brand new ugly old outfit to wear one night. even the leggings were $12.  I was hoping to find some legwarmers, only cause I thought those might actually feel fun to wear again and I might use them around the house.

ideas?  suggestions?  I figure the Salvation Army will be a good place to start.  I'd LOVE to find those rubber bracelets.. I liked those back then too.

Oh, and a crimper.  I'd like to crimp my hair just one more time in my life.  :)

Wow this thread brought back memories.  I don't think that I would want to wear stirups.  Its bad enough I have to put my feet in them once a year at the doctors.  I wish I could have my 23 year old roommate read this.  I am sure that he has not seen any of these fads.  I had to tell him who the A-team was the other day.  Oh to be young again.

I use to love stirrups. What is that thing on the t-shirt? I am not familiar with those. LOL@Jan on the platform shoes. Please don't say you had the ones with the goldfish in them...*falls over laughing*..How the hell did the poor fish get fed? Does anyone remember knickers? I use to wear them too. The one fad I liked was the black shoes that Chinese girls would wear, I don't know the name of them but around here we called them babydoll shoes. I remember they came in all colors. And what about penny loafers and oxford shoes? I remember wearing oxford shoes since I was a cheerleader in grade school. I hated penny loafers though.

Ohhhh the wonders of Wendy's hair and what exactly is her natural color? LOL
I've even shaved the back of my head once.

Anyone else ever run around in pants you had to zip up with pliers or a coat hanger and a sport bra as a shirt?
How about those lovely sweat shirts with the arms and neck cut out of them?
How about using a hair drier and hair spray to get your bangs to stand as tall as possible?

And just because it tickles me so much and I couldnt find any good ones of me immediately. I'll treat you all to a beautiful picture of my wonderful older brother.
 ;D Bollo tie anyone?

Twist-a-beads.  Anybody remember those?  Winn, I used to wear my hair like that in the 80's.  The bigger the better :o

I also had Hammer pants, stir-up pants, long shirts worn with a belt around the bottom then pulled up to blouse it out.  I was going to include the all time "What was I thinking" bubble skirt...but holy crap! they're back in style.  The other fashion fad I'll never repeat - the bikini. ;D

Nope, not me but did anyone actually own one of those Michael Jackson Thriller jackets? Come on, fess up. I didn't but once I got into Prince real heavy I use to go to house parties with the long trench on with lingerie under it. And wear my hair the way Prince did in Purple Rain. Of course I didn't leave the house that way. I would go over a friend's house and change. Hell, I remember this one guy here they started calling Prince cause he went all out even down to the eyeliner. That took balls for a dude and he never got beat up. And the girls loved him.

I used to do that to my pants, too.  Rolled them really tight around the ankles.  I also wore red and green plaid pants with a black t-shirt in highschool.  I was dating a boarder and often danced in mosh pits while wearing a mini skirt. :o  I also tied my t-shirts into a knot in the back.  *sigh* Back in the day when i had my pretty little figure.  It's still pretty, it's just not so little ;)

Mini- Your too funny!  I was never little, I went ice skating the other day and I felt like an Amazon and was thinking to myself it is a good thing I don't wear heels.
I totally forgot about tie dye.
I had a hippie-granola phase too.  Complete with mocassins and long, flowing skirts, and those long knit like square pocketbooks or crocheted  maybe?
Anyone get into the hairwraps?  Taking embroidery floss and tying it in near your scalp around a chunk of hair and then wrapping it real tight all the way down.  I think I saw them doing it at Six Flags this year.

Win- your legs go on for years in that pic:)

(who always wore her stirrup pants with stiletto heels..how sad is that)

Jan, I will be hitting the G.W. (Goodwill) boutique probably next month.  One of my sisters gave me the stirrup pants I have.  I usually don't wear them unless I'm hanging out at home.  Actually Goodwill has quite a selection sometimes.  And nothing like 50% off day! ;D

Betty, I am a Good Will junkie!  When the kids got dressed today, I added up what it cost - less than $10 for all 6 of them!  They looked really cute, too.  Like i tell hubby, poor people don't give away their clothes.  Rich people give away their clothes.  Most of the kids' stuff still has price tags on them.  Here, every week a different section is 50% off.  We've figured out the pattern and make sure we hit it when kids' clothes / shoes are 50% off.  I couldn't tell you the last time I paid full price for anything.

I love the Goodwill too but ours never have 50% off.  Salvation Army does but their stuff usually sucks.  Our Goodwill kids section everything is 2 bucks so I can luck out too....sometimes :)
The book section is the best 50 cent for a paperback and a buck for hardcover.

That is great you did all 6 kids for that amount...you get a gold star for that one  ;D

I've been told I have legs that go up and make an ass of themselves. (of course, this was told to me by my extremely perverted ex husband-2nd one)

u just reminded me of this Bruce Willis movie the Story of Us where his friend says he shouldnt say "ass". Said he it was just 'the top of the legs' or something like that. They get into a fight in a restaurant and the friend offers Bruce bread and Bruce yells "u can take that bread and shove it up the top of your legs!'. Thought that was real funny. Off topic i know, sorry!

I've been reading everybody's posts.  Needless to say, I'm laughing my ass off over here. ;D   A fashion fad i wouldn't repeat... definitely has to be the nasty jheri curl that my mother put in my hair when I was like 8 or 9 years old.   Thank God there are no pictures of that awful era...  LOL

By the way...  Queen Akasha ... I used to have a crush on Billy Idol way back in the day...  He just had that bad boy look that turned me on.

I didnt see any dripping.  ;D  In junior high most of the black girls had a jheri curl and lots of straight hair girls got that tight tight spiral perm. LOL I recall seeing groups of girls shivering at the door to the school their hair wet with mouse and gel and squirting thier hair with water trying to keep those curls from frizzing out.

I did the spiral perm a couple of times. Only once did it look nice and that was after it grew out after a few months and loosened up.

Yeah I don't remember dripping much from the jheri curl but it ruined lots of pillowcases.  LOL ;D

I remember seeing the girls in school with the BIG hair during my junior high & high school days.  I loved the guys with the BIG hair too.  I'm from Jersey so at that time...everybody wanted to be like the band Bon Jovi.  LOL

Tube tops with corduroy levis and Cher straight long hair parted in the middle.  My mom made some of our cloths so she would sew them longer to cover more and add these little cap sleeves on our tub tops so they wouldn't fall down around our waist.  We had to compromise is we wanted to wear those.   Hot pants she made us those too but when she made them they would be more like warm pants. :o
