Exciting changes on the horizon
« on: October 05, 2007, 12:08:02 am »
As many of you AMG attendees know, I met someone very special this year in San Francisco.  He lives in California and I in Florida.  Things have been going very well the last few weeks.  I flew out there the weekend after returning from SFO and I'll be flying out there again this weekend.  The exciting part though is I've (we've) decided that I'm going to relocate to Los Angeles.  I know this is all very quick but I've never felt so sure about something as I do this.  I've been single and content for many years now and quite honestly I never thought I'd find someone who makes me feel the way I do at the moment.

I received word from an office with my emloyer in Los Angeles today that they'll accept my transfer.  So November 3rd I'll be packing up my 1993 honda accord and making the trek cross country.   I'm a little nervous about my car making it so it should be an adventure in and of itself.  If anyone has made this trip and has any tips please share.

Not really sure why I'm posting this.  Guess I just wanted share this joyous moment with my AMG family.

Peace,
Dennis

Dennis this is GREAT NEWS!!!!!

But LA is like 7 hours from SF?

I've done the cross country ride. Take your time, make it a 10 day ride, not a 3 day ride, there are beautiful places you want to see. From Florida I would go up to I10, then west, stop in new orleans, then go up I49 to shrveport then to forth worth, then to wichita falls, west to Amarillo, I40 to Albuquerque, continue to Flagstaff, visit the Grand Canyon, then I40 all the way to LA, unless you can make a detour to Las Vegas via route 93.

As much as I would like to, I don't plan on doing much sightseeing along the way.  I'll have my dog with my so I'll be pretty limited.  I'm planning on hopefully making the trip in 5 days.  Most have said I can make in 3 but I don't want to push my car too hard.

Robert was living in the Sacramento area but received his teaching job in LAX he was going after.

You suck!

Take the opportunity. Your dog will love the breaks too.

I hate Los Angeles but I'll be happy to drive there to see you both. I'll stop by Kitson shop if you don't mind :D

Dennis.

This is such great news!

Having met you both, I'd say you've both made some fantastic choices.  You were our AMG guy for a reason. Robert showed up for Allan's Walk for a reason.  Kismet.

CAn't give you much advice on the drive except to take your time and enjoy it.  Stop and stretch and walk the dog.  Stop at Starbucks and get yourself a cup of coffee.

IF you ever come up to Arbuckle to meet the family, let me know.  I'm only an hour away.

Hey Dennis,

Congrats!  I have lived in Los Angeles for many years and have been very happy there.  Hope you are too and am wondering which city you will be moving to.  Having always been a South Bay Beach Cities guy, I have lived in Redondo Beach, Long Beach and Seal Beach.  Personally, I have a long time dream of moving back to Long Beach because I visit there every year or so and always run into old friends.  For me, Long Beach is most like what I would call home if I hadn't moved every two years for most of my adult life.

I drove across country once when I was like 19.  We took the northern route in the dead of winter in an old convertible.  I remember passing through Cheyanne Wyoming at noon at it was -45 degrees. I still remember the chill from touching the top which started at my fingertips and went through to my toes...  A cross country road trip is an adventure but you need to plan for it.  Have the car tuned and all fluid levels correct and check them on the way.  How are the tires and what condition is the spare?

We did upstate New York to Hayward CA in 5 days and 5 nights of continuous driving.  I sort of missed the Great Salt Lake, the Grand Canyon and drove through Vegas without stopping.  After all these years, I am planning on the Grand Canyon this spring season.

There was a San Francisco band in the early 70's called Quicksilver Messenger Service.  I would like to sing one of their songs for you.  Of course everyone would remember it from Roy Rogers and Dale Evans but... "Happy Trails to You, Until We Meet Again."  Well anyway, I'm not much of a singer so... Have the best day

Oh, I'm so happy and excited for you, sweet man.
Do you have a backup plan just in case the Honda doesn't make it? (Of course you do, you are Mr. Organizer.)
Honda should do well, though, if it's been taken care of and you don't push it. Get the oil changed and have it tuned up, hoses checked. Keep a gallon of windshield washer solution in the trunk/back. You'll use it.
Can you find someone as travel companion who will share in the driving.
Don't forget the sunglasses as there are some fantastic sunsets blazing away--the further westward you drive. However they will blind your ass with their beauty.  8)
Take a nice break or overnighter after you cross Texas. (I found the drive through Texas rather desperate. It would not end!)
Los Angeles, eh? Good luck and I hope you find it to your liking. Some love LA; some hate it. OH! Man, the LA freeway is gonna be a nice adrenaline rush for ya!  8)
A laptop? Update us during the trip! (just a suggestion)

Have a swell life in California.
Mike (who is very happy to learn you are leaving that landlord in Florida and that you are a Slave to Love.)

Good luck with the drive.  I've never driven that far myself.  I have driven from northern Indiana to the middle of Alabama.  Just take really frequent stops.  Your dog will appreciate that.  I didn't my first couple trips to Alabama and was shaking when I got to where I was going.

How exciting for you Dennis!  I wish you both the best!

Please drive carefully, that is a long way.  Good thing you'll have your dog to keep you company, they make great company  :)

The Honda should make it just fine, my future son-in-law had 250,000 miles on his before he decided to get a new car.

Dennis,

Somehow, this doesn't surprise me!   ;)  I had a friend that moved to Salt Lake City about 9 years ago.  I went along to help in the drive.  He rented the smallest van available and towed his car.  I know it didn't cost all that much, as he's the absolute cheapest person I've ever met (and comes from a family with quite a bit of money - imagine that!).  If you really don't have that much stuff to take along, I guess this wouldn't make a lot of sense, though.  I'd make sure that I had the 'enhanced' motor club towing plan that includes towing whatever distance for repairs in the event that you have a problem.  I have a converted bus (motorhome) and I wouldn't leave home in it without my motor club membership being up to date!  Tell Robert 'hello' for D and I.

Dennis,

What an adventure!  I moved to LA two years ago from Atlanta and did the cross-country drive twice, the first time alone (in three days) when I came out here for a contracting job.  The second time was ten months later, after being hired full time, in a rented mini-van with two dogs and my partner.  For the most part the dogs were much better behaved than my partner... but that's a whole 'nuther story  :P

I highly suggest a membership with that big auto association if you don't already have one.  The savings in rooms rates for four nights will pay for the year's membership and their guide books indicate which motels allow dogs.  Also, if you visit one of their offices, they have customized maps of your route that they'll put together on the spot for you.  These allow you to plan your drive a bit better since they have detailed mileage markings and every exit has available services shown on the map as well.  We did I-20 to Birmgingham, jogged up to Memphis to get on I-40, and then all the way to California.  I can understand not being able to stop & sightsee, but there are some fun & quirky stops along the way that will give you and your dog a chance to stretch your legs and marvel at Stuff (the tallest cross in the world is a real kick).

Best wishes for a smooth (and fun!) start to this new chapter in your life!

Dennis,

Well, this is interesting news, and I must say, not surprising from the bit of gossip I heard about AMG.....  ;)

As far as the route you are taking, I 10 is probably the best route for time, and there is plenty of stuff to see along the way.  Just make sure you consider just how wide Texas is when you cross over in Louisiana.  If you keep us posted, I would be anxious to drive the 20 miles I live from I 10 and meet you for a break in Benson Arizona.  That is my exit, and it would be fun to meet you and share a few minutes over a cup of Jo.

As far as the car is concerned;  Please do these things before you leave Florida.

Change the hoses, and belts.  They are relatively cheap, and no amount of duct tape will console you when you are sitting on the freeway with your pooch.  Have your Transmission flushed, and new fluid put in.  If it is a manual shift, make sure to change the oil in the trans and have the clutch adjusted.  Change the oil in your engine and also the radiator coolant.  If your tires are not in excellent shape, go ahead and buy new ones, it just isn't worth the risk again, and buying tires along the way can cost you double what you might pay while at home.  Other than that, your car should easily make the trek, so a little prevention can go a long way to getting you there without much headache.  Being broken down on a trip like this can really mess with your mind.

Love,
The Bible contains 6 admonishments to homosexuals,
and 362 to heterosexuals.
This doesn't mean that God doesn't love heterosexuals,
It's just that they need more supervision.

I think this is great news.  Sometimes in life we just gotta roll the damn dice, and see where they land.

Welcome to the West coast buddy, and best wishes to both you and Robert as you begin this new adventure together.

Oh, if you do decide to switch over from I-10 to more northern route, avoid the Texas/Oklahoma panhandle area as your switch point or else you'll be smelling cow shit for 60 miles of your route. It permeates the air, hon. Intensely.
It's just one of those experiences I won't forget.

Dennis,

I am very happy for you, what great news.  This sounds like a gay fairy tale, I am very excited for you.
I am a South Florida native myself, and I have to say that I had no problems becoming a Californian, as a matter of fact, I never looked back from the day I got in my car and moved out here.
It took me 5 days and 4 nights to drive from NC to San Francisco and I took a detour, but drove 12hours a day.
I think your best bet is to take either the Turnpike and get off on the I-75 exit  to Tallahassee or just get on Alligator Alley to I-75.  From Tallahassee take I-10 and just go west....all the way....that is definitely the shortest and fastest route to L.A.   The worst part of the drive is going through Texas...no offense my dear Texans, it just takes an entire day to drive through the state and it feels like you are never going to get to the New Mexico border.
If you did have the time to leisure cruise your way out west, this is a great route as you will pass New Orleans, Houston, San Antonio, El Paso, Tucson and Phoenix, all right off I-10.

Congratulations, may California bring you as much happiness as it has brought me.

Hey Dennis, It was almost a forgone conclusion...when you two were together you both glowed....ahhhh young love....
.as  for the travelling  I have had occasion to travel in both directions to and from San Jose several times....used both the North route and the South route.....South route is better.... I know I10 seems like the fastest way to go but it does divert you to Houston,( a real mess to travel to or around  at any time )  and other places south...a small diversion up to I 20 in Louisiana will take you through Dallas /Fort Worth and then straight thru  to El Paso and on to Arizona..New Mexico...California......   I will be more than happy to treat you and your dog to dinner and a nice comfortable motel right here at the East edge of Dallas.....right on I30  ( just a very short distance north of  I20..they actually converge here in Dallas..)
PM me if you are even considering this and I will make arrangements for you......you did so much for all of us in SF that this is only a small payback.....

Nick is right about the Houston mess.
When I moved here I left NC and spent the night with friends in Nashville, TN. Than I took a detour and went to Dallas to visit one of my dearest friends.  I then took 287 to Amarillo where I picked up I-40  through Albuquerque and Flagstaff down to LA.  Once I crossed the New Mexico border the ride was amazingly beautiful to me...it was the first time I had been to the SW and it was gorgeous.  Dallas to Amarillo...make sure you have good music to keep you going...Texas seems to never want to come to an end...lol
I saved a lot of time by cutting trough Texas by doing the 287 to I-40 route.

AWESOME!  Love to have you here in "the land of fruits and nuts..."  Anyway, I drove from Pittsburgh to San Diego in 37 hours once and only stopped for gas.  When I stopped for gas, I used the bathroom and got food.  I slept for two days when I got here.  Three years ago I drove Baltimore to San Diego and it took three days ..... if I did it again, I would take three days.  With a dog?  You are a brave soul!

what the hell did fill up your tank with? Jet fuel?  Tina?  :o  I'd be afraid to ride with you  ::) LOL

oh I forgot to mention...I drove to CA with 2 dogs in the car with me...my babies were so good...my car was overpacked but it worked out...I had the seats down on the back and everything piled up to about head rest level...just enough room to see the back window and be able to see from the review mirror...my babies came on top of that mess all the way which worked out great because they could rest their little heads right next to mine the entire drive....I have to find the pictures.....

Now THIS would make a great cover story for POZ.  The AMG, the completely unplanned tete a tete, dinner in China Town, the flight back to Florida, the move to California.

Robert, that is a GREAT idea!  What a great story that would make: "Boy Meets Boy via AIDSmeds Forums"

Dennis, get typing now to set the scene, write a few short notes on your trip, like a short diary, sum it up a week after you arrive then submit to POZ.  Two good-looking young men in love might just be a total scoop!

Hi Dennis and Robert...Good luck with your move to Los Angeles ...As others have stated you were a very nice couple indeed.  You are both nice, young men- and very handsome as well I should note.

I lived in Los Angeles in 1980 and '81 and I enjoyed being in California.  The weather was great and it was a different pace from New York of course...So put your right foot forward and enjoy the breezes and each other's company and good luck to you both.

Thanks to everyone for your words of support.  My work transfer has been finalized and my route has been planned.  I''m hoping to make this trip in 4 days with an overnigt in Biloxi, San Antonio, and Tuscon.  If mapquest is anywhere to being realistic I should make it to LAX by the evening of November 7th.  A colleague from work has gotten 2 weeks of from work and will be making the trip with me.  This could be a good or bad thing as we always seem to get into some kind of trouble when we're togethor for any length of time.  I'll definitely keep you all updated of my adventures along the way.

Peace,
Dennis
