-75 what does this mean, why not -0 ?
« on: August 03, 2007, 01:49:29 pm »
-75 is supposed to be undetectable, but why is it not just zero? I tried to look it up on here in the search, but could not find the answer. Thanks to anyone who can explain.  :)

That's a muddled question.  Sure the Sustiva isn't kicking in?   ;)

A viral load of 75 certainly isn't undetectable with the untra-sensitive tests;  and "undetectable" doesn't mean zero, just that the amount of virus is below the lower limit of detection for the test used.

they told me "Minus 75" , that is what confuses me, why don't they just say Zero, I know they use a machine to count the blood cells, etc...so how can you count something that is not there? alas the "Minus 75" ?

So you have a negative viral load, uh  :o :o :o

Where did you see that "Minus 75"? Or did you just hear it from someone? Because it's possible that the person was looking at "<75" and read it to you as "Minus 75" instead of "Less than 75" ? Or maybe he was giving you the results in Latin :D

I am in the RW system and don't always get the special care and time to have my questions answered, this is important to me, hopefully I can find out eventually, I was hoping someone here knew the answer, so it must be a typo, in my records, strange.  :-\

AU,
Regardless of how your care is funded and where it is received, you should not be receiving what amount to BS explanations of your health, and there should be a patient advocate available (through the local/regional HIV planning commussion that doles out RW funds, or through the ASO itself) to address your concerns.  A negative number sounds like a reference to the trend in viral load expressed in logarithmic terms, in this case '-0.75' would mean it fell by a factor of 10 to the .75 power or simply 0.178 (about one-sixth) of what it had been.

Still, you need to receive accurate descriptions from your caregivers in words you can understand; and the only person who can begin to make certain that happens in you.  Insisting on proper care and consultation should not penalize you with the caregivers--if it does, there's federal hell to pay--but it will may you stronger in the long run.

Peace,
David

Oh yeah, makes more sense. Atripla User, you should ask again. If anything is unclear, then ask them to explain. They surely prefer someone that has his mind at ease after understanding their results than a person who is confused by their answer. So ask!

I suspect this has a simple answer: -75 = viral load of 75 or less. Many test printouts use '-' instead of '<' and '+' instead of '>'.
