Spacing after a period (AM Forum Spell checker)

Why does the spell checking, sometimes, remove extra spaces (above one) after a period?  Every now and then it will remove extra spaces, but the funny thing is that it doesn't do it all the time. 

We were taught in school that you must use two spaces after the end of a sentence, (and this was in the computer age so no typewriters).  Too late to change that mentality now.  Sometimes it's hard reading a sentence with only one space afterwards, especially if the sentence ends with an abbreviation (with periods).

My keyboarding instructor taught me the same thing...  it helps when discerning the end of a sentence and initials.

I was taught that too, but it really is more applicable to typewriting than with computers which employ proportional fonts/kerning.  Your "computer" teacher was probably originally a typing teacher.  I learned to type before the age of computers so I find it hard NOT to put in the two spaces.

when I was in school,there were no typewriters.So sometimes, no spaces at all!

My husband is in the printing industry and I asked him about the two space-rule. I will try to explain what he told me.

When type writers were used, and when type was hand set, the space between the letters was a set amount, so two spaces were used at the end of a sentence to denote the end.

Since computers, fonts have kerning (space between letters) built into the font, so it self-regulates the type in order to make it easy for the eye to read, and to make it visually appealing. If two spaces are made at the end of a sentence, it causes large gaps in the document which is visually unappealing.

If a customer sends him documents to be printed the printing company has to go through and replace all of the double spaces with single spaces.

So, bottom line is that two spaces are now considered to be visually unappealing in the printing industry, and a single space after a period is the standard.

This seems to be an anomaly of the younger generation, as we were taught single spacing in typing class(circa 1975/76).

I took typing in high school also and as part of learning
"QWERTY"  I also learned to double space between sentences.  I still do.  But I don't see the issue.  I do use spell check here and it never tries to correct that.

I was taught to write by hand. And to distinguish between further and farther. And when someone said "thank you," to respond "you're welcome" instead of "no problem." And I could go on with more of those sad things.  But I won't.

LOL... I'm glad I'm not the only one who assumed Cliff was talking about something else.

I wondered - how the hell does Cliff know I get spacey after? Well, spacier than normal, anyway.
