Hi,

thanks for posting. I'm in Florida right now, but I'm in touch with my friends in SD. The fires are about 25 miles north and 15 miles southeast from where I live. The evacuation in Del Mar is because the Santa Ana winds that go west. We expected those fires to happen, it's been extremely dry for months and the last drops we got a week-end ago were not enough to prevent fires like this.

As for me, I may have difficulty flying back like 3 years ago when the airport was closed to due ash falling from the skies, we shall see. My dog is safe so far.

Milker.

Got a call from my brother late this afternoon.  There is a voluntary evacuation in San Diego in effect which may go to manditory.  He said it went from 2 fire storm areas to 8 overnight.  He and wife are on the way east to a shelter area.  Bad situation...say mantras the winds ( primary cause of the rapid spread) will subside, and everyone can return home and find them intact.

Let's be clear...................................SAN DIEGO IS ON FIRE! 2/3 of the city has been evacuated and still more to come.  There are currently 8 fires randomly burning around the county.  This shit is CRAZY!

Anyone heard from sdcabincrew74 ?

I remember the hills above Carlsbad, where I lived about 10 years ago, being on fire.

Pretty damn scary, not to mention bad for those with respiratory illnesses.

Take care all of you guys down in the Southland.

Anyone remember Nancy? She still lives in the San Diego area as far as I know - I remember what she went through in 2003. I hope her and her husband, her menagerie and the bamboo all come through this ok.

bush and cheney started the fires .  Why wasnt FEMA more prepared for this disaster? People who live in certain parts of the world take certain risks. If you live on the Gulf Coast you know hurricanes might destroy your property,if you live in Socal you have fires, earthquakes, and landslides to worry about. I pray we dont have to bail out homeowners who knew the risks before they settled here.
I will take hurricanes all day long over fires.

Fire Update:

Here is a map that shows where all of the fires are.  Most major freeways are closed and everyone has been asked to stay home whether they are affected or not as they want us to stay off of the freeways so evacuee's can have a way out.

It's black outside and smells like soot and is raining ash.  It ain't looking good as winds are up to 70 miles per hour in the mountains.

Guys, that's really scary.  I didn't realize that there was all that much growth to burn since the fires in '03 and '05.  Are they in different places this time?  From the pics I've seen, it looks like a lot of brush / small trees that are burning, but it's hard to tell.  I would have thought multi-lane highways would stop the fire somewhat, or at least slow it.  We're a bit dry over here on the East coast, but nowhere near as bad off as you guys are.  Be careful and take care.

The fires have jumped freeways, it's totally random.  Densely populated areas have been drastically affected, MANY homes have been burned in areas of Rancho Bernardo, Poway, Ramona and it's travelling fast into Chula Vista.

Power outages all over the county, limited cell phone useage and limited freeway access.

So far, people in Hillcrest, Normal Heights, Downtown area are fine.  It would have to be a really creative fire to get to us, but shit, who knew it would do what it has up to this point.  Watch the news, it's all we can do.  I myself feel fairly safe where I am.

It's going to be in the 100's today with very high winds.  Stay indoors, limit activity and turn on your A/C if you have it to filter out the bad shit.

sorry Matty, but the housing debacle in Socal is very serious. Many people who are on the verge of BK are hoping the wind blows their way and insurance bails them out. Just make sure you grab your computer and family pics, everything else can be replaced. I am really bummed, cause San Diego is the most beautiful city in the US and I hope no one is harmed.
Might be time to buy some manufactured housing stocks. This works after hurricanes in Gulf Coast, but I dont know if many in Socal would stoop this low.

Might be time to buy some manufactured housing stocks. This works after hurricanes in Gulf Coast, but I dont know if many in Socal would stoop this low.
I know fucking Bush had something to do with this

Jack,

Knock it off already. This isn't a thread about Bush and neither is it a thread about the stock market. Why do you have to do this to every single thread you post in lately?

People are worried about their lives, their livelihoods and the roof over their head. Why can't you send them your best wishes and leave it at that?

Consider yourself warned, Jack. Enough is enough already.

Jack, Ann's already given you a warning so I don't have to do that although I would have.

I will just add that you might give some thought to how automatically you inject the Clintons or in this case some other names and insensitive responses into almost any discussion. It pretty much never moves a subject forward. In situations such as this your remarks are irrelevant and thoughtless when the matter at hand is people's lives and homes in grave danger.

Your comments come off as cheap shots, unfeeling and infuriating.

Life is too short under the best of circumstances, Jack. Do you really want to live out your years with the compassion and other emotions I believe you have within you, so encrusted over that all you can do indulge yourself in spouting this kind of stuff? -- instead of actually engaging members in more varied ways?

And that is not a rhetorical question.

Tommy if I can be of any assistance in helping you locate your parents, please send me a PM.  Depending on what area they live in, most people are at Qualcomm Stadium.

Contact the American Red Cross, they are keeping records of everyone.

Fires are still raging, MANY more evacuations and reverse 911 calls going out to over 2,000 people and they say more to come.

Wish I had better news to report.  Moe and I are packed and ready to go if we need to.

I agree with you Ann. Jack's comments weren't well placed. However, I should mention that he brings up a vaild issue that everyone in the US should consider. We saw the dismal response of our government after Hurrican Katrina. I just don't know how much we can rely on federal help in any crisis. So during this crisis (in America or elsewhere), I'll make the suggestion that I do during every other crisis:

If you haven't taken the time to make preparations for an emergency situation, the end result could leave you stranded and homeless, surrounded by flood or fire. Prepare an emergency kit and plans today, BEFORE you find yourself in an emergency situation.

(In ohio where we mainly worry about the occassional blizzard or local flooding, I have an emergency kit not only in the house; but also another in the car (with blankets and a shovel), along with a plan of where to meet up with friends and family.)

Best wishes to everyone in Cali!
May the rains come, the winds diminish, and the fires dampen
to save you, your loved ones and your homes.

Tommy, I'm glad to know your folks are ok.

BUT your comments to Jack and the language you used are absolutely unacceptable. Your concerns about your parents do not excuse that kind of a rant here. The firestorm in this thread stops right here. If you have a complaint about him send it to the moderators.

I just recieved an email from a friend who resides in San diego... he was evacuated on sunday evening... I called his mom who lives in Prattville, AL to check on him so she must have sent word to him to follow up with me... his home is gone.... it burned down in 2003 or 2004 he rebuilt and now everything is gone again. He wrote he would let me know when he will be returning back to Bama... it looks like I'll have a house guest for awhile... now I'll have to clean house and arrange pathways large enough for a wheel-chair... he's been poz since 1987 and has been wheel chair bound for 10 years now... he just thinks of this as a set back... I'm sure he will probally move back for some reason he likes it out there... I'm thinking of everyone and wishing them all well in California...

I'm glad to hear people's families and friends are getting out ok... at least the ones we're hearing about are.  Here on the East Coast, we don't worry much about fires; I think we had a bad one a couple counties away back in '86.  We don't have much in the way of earth quakes, either.  But damn if we don't have hurricanes!  We're supposed to average one every 7 years, but it's been more like several every year lately, 'cept for none this year.  Fires would surely be a scary thing.  Here's praying for some of our (normally) wet weather going your way, but it's been a bit dry here this year, too.  Take care, guys and gals (see, Lisa, I didn't forget you!)

I not trying to bum anyone out but just saw a report on a business channel that the fire is gonna help many Socal home owners who are being crushed by the housing market. As most are aware many in Socal,fl,az and nevada bought real estate with teaser mortgages hoping to flip the properties for a quick profit. Those people are all facing personal bk. Many of these people are hoping the fire takes them out of their pain with insurance. Thats all I was talking about. Geez.

That's not really an appropriate subject for this thread. You're hijacking. Why don't you just quit while you're ahead, eh? I don't want to see you post in this thread again, unless it's to wish someone well. Is that so difficult for you?

There are 13 major fires In L.A. County alone. It’s not just in San Diego. It’s from Malibu, to Long Beach, to San Bernardino down to San Diego.

If anyone would like to find away to help these people out you could at this site.

www.cnn.com/impact

Over 750,000 people have been evacuated. No one knows yet how many are now homeless. Over 1000 homes completely destroyed. Two deaths and around 27 injured.

And I doubt that at an average cost of 1.5 to 2.5 Million dollar homes would be on the verge of bankruptcy.

As usual, people deviate from the original subject.

So sad considering over 530,000 have been evacuated, 1,300 have lost their homes entirely and 700 more have been damaged.  And the counts continue to rise.

No end in sight at the moment.  New fires are cropping up all over as the winds are blowing embers and starting new ones.

Seems no where is truly safe at the moment.  Those who can are glued to their television sets.  No cell phone coverage and we have been asked to conserve our power due to several outages.

And the saga continues..............

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.  Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.  It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.  We ask ourselves.."Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?  Actually, who are you not to be?"

Glad to hear everyone from here is safe so far.
The ferocity of these types of fire storms is frightening and a little awe inspiring. Any attempts to control them seem somewhat feeble as the full force of nature is not something to be reckoned with.
I hope conditions change for the better and you all remain safe.

Our fire season has just kicked off and word on the ground is it's gonna be a bad year. seven years of drought and its a tinder box out there.

Fire update....

Thank you for all of your well wishes.  It's a very trying time for us Southern Californians.

Fires are still raging here.  Some evacuations have been called off but other areas are now affected that weren't before.  As night falls here, the winds become more unpredictable.  The advice of the governor/mayor are that even if you aren't in an area that is being evacuated, be prepared to do so anyway.

Still VERY warm here, even at 7:30pm, in the high 70's.  They say they won't even begin to contain any of the fires until Thursday when the weather is supposed to be cooler/calmer.

My thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by these terrible fires.
We know what they are like and it is an annual event in parts of Australia, as other members down here would know.
I just hope everyone is OK and can get on with their lives when it is all over.

Best wishes

Hey Lisa,

Thank you for the maps and updates.  My cousin Erik and his girl are living in Hillcrest, his mother in Monterrey was worried.  They had spoken yesterday, everything was fine.  Tonight we looked over the maps and the info you supplied.  We started noticing how many shelters were full and highways closed.  I think a mother feels better this evening than she did this afternoon.  Thank you so very much.

Today I heard that the fires are zero percent contained. That's scary and nerve breaking. I hope you're all doing okay.

OMG!!  So many lost their homes.  It's like revisiting Katrina.
My heart goes out to all those who are affected....

Respectfully I add...
Couldn't help but notice FEMA had their shit together this time.

FIRE UPDATE:

Fires are not expected to be contained until sometime around November 3rd or so.

"Back fires" that were started to burn off brush and prevent further fires have gotten out of control and now Camp Pendleton has four very active fires burning out of control.

At this time, over 1/2 a million people have been evacuated and only about 100k of them have been let back into their homes, if they have homes to go back to.  It's hot as hell here, well let's be clear, it is HELL here of late.

Winds died down a bit and the MEGA BIG DOG planes that were supposed to be here to drop water are on the ground because there are no "spotters" to fly with them?  Yeah, I know I don't get that either.

More people have been evacuated here than in Katrina, fucking A.  San Diego may be a large city, but we have small town spirit.  We are organized, caring and smart.

That's it for now.  To bottom line it....................IT AIN'T OVER BY FAR

There is going to be an FBI news conference tonight offering a reward for information on the person or persons that set the fires.
