VRX496 Study information
« on: April 22, 2008, 04:23:50 pm »
For those that are wondering if they are still doing VRX496 study and are interested here is some information from VirXsys' website.

Phase I/II – Study in patients not on antiretroviral therapy
There are two segments of the HIV population that are not on antiretroviral drugs: (i) HIV-positive patients who have not yet reached viral load and CD4 T cell count thresholds judged to be severe enough to warrant drugs, and (ii) HIV patients who have previously been on drugs but suspended those drugs due to either toxicities or the drugs not being effective.

This trial will test VRX496 in these patient populations to determine if VRX496 gene therapy can control their viral loads and postpone or prevent those patients from having to go on antiretroviral drugs.

This trial will include 20 patients and will be conducted at Harvard University, the University of Pennsylvania, and the University of Amsterdam. Funding for the US arm of the trial has been approved by the AIDS Clinical Trial Group of the NIH.

For additional information about our clinical trial program, contact VIRxSYS at clinicaltrials@virxsys.com.

Biz,
I myself never got in because they changed the requirements to get into the study.  The requirement that knocked me out of being able to enter was my CD4 Nadir which is the lowest CD4 count you have ever had.  Mine has been as low as 160 something.  Actually the post http://forums.poz.com/index.php?topic=18893.0 has some information that was posted about the current studies with VRX496 and they do look somewhat promising.  I might add kinda pricey too at the current moment if it was FDA approved and not a study.
Hope that helps!

Hey AppleBoy,

Do you know whether you have to be located near one of the study centers in order to participate?  I think I might qualify under the criteria, but don't live near any of the universities mentioned.

I would assume so since the study sites are where they do the intakes, blood draws, anal biopsies, and the reinsertion of the VRX496 cells.  It is quite a complex study and studies are watched like a hawk usually meaning only the places listed will do anything regarding the study.
Hope that helps!

Not sure if you mean European Union.  If that is what you mean from what I have found they are not part of the European Union.  If this is not what you meant could you clarify?
Thanks

Sorry to contradict you, Appleboy, but the University of Amsterdam is in the Netherlands, which is indeed a member of the European Union.

Cheers,

Jake
