Buckwild star dies
« on: April 02, 2013, 12:10:11 pm »
I've enjoyed this reality show very much, especially since it's filmed one county south of my family's original homestead where I spent the best years of my youth.  Never understood the controversy about stereotypes because in reality, we did and continue to do half the shit they perform on the show.  Even got some new ideas!

Wasn't part of the controversy the recklessness?  And people asking if MTV was cynical encouraging these non-professionals youth to such antics..  Jackass was stuntmen actors....

So much for "making your own fun" when it leads to death four wheeling. What's worse is that his relatives are paying for his funeral by organizing a mud run "off-road trucking event" which from what I can ascertain is how he died.

I've never heard of this guy or this "show" until now. But hopefully they will take this ridiculous show down.

It's my understanding they they went mud running after the bars closed and got their truck stuck.  Since it was cold, I can only guess they kept the thing running until morning when they could summon help.  If the exhaust was under mud, it would have been easy to poison themselves.

And the Charles Darwin award goes to

To whom?  Do you mean people who perform reckless actions that cause imminent danger or death?  I guess a lot of us also earned that award too!

I think the major controversy is that the show portrays rural WVA folk in a lesser light.  Nobody needs to encourage teenagers in those parts to perform risky stunts.  We did them back then and they do continue doing them.

So much for "making your own fun" when it leads to death four wheeling.

People die everyday from entertainment pursuits.  How is this any different than someone who breaks their neck when their $250,000 horse throws them while jumping?

He's on a national TV show, and didn't make enough to pay for a funeral?  I know this is how the networks operate.  They pay the people a few hundred dollars, while they cash in.  I realize if the show is a hit, they often negotiate to get more money, and sometimes go on to make more money from other things.  That's what the Duck Dynasty folks are doing--holding out for more money.  But, you should at least make enough to pay for a funeral.

MTV is one big commercial delivery network.  Yes, all networks are, but MTV is the worst.  Every 5 minutes, there is a commercial break.  They did that with the HIV show.  I found it lacking in substance, while having commercial break after commercial break.  Perhaps the DVR is to blame.

I for one will be happy when America moves away from this phase where we put poor, rural, mostly southern people on tv for "entertainment."

Honey boo boo, the one about the people that make moon shine, the one about the people who fish with their hands, the one about the trailer park dynasty thing, the one about the duck calling people, this one about them doing crazy stuff.

My guess it that equestrians aren't jacked up on meth and hooch and have years of training as to safe ways to ride a horse. False equivalency.

Imagine that. Three mere counties away.

How many mere hollers does that amount to? ;D

Not many because they leveled them out when they constructed interstate 67 between Charleston and Huntington. My father lived in the bustling city of Huntington on the Ohio River (150 east of Cincinnati), population 85,000 which was larger than the state capital at that time by a tad :) The hollers were outside of the city.

When you referred to "my family's original homestead", I thought late 1700s, early 1800s, well before interstate highways. You do say your family goes back a bit, don't you?

That's why I asked how many mere hollers were involved in three mere counties.

My grandfather was a rum runner and pool shark during Prohibition... what more proof do you need?

It's the maternal side of my family that was prim and proper in the Tidewater area of the Old Dominion. You know, my mother married downwards much to my grandmother's consternation. She was supposed to marry and oil engineer like her brother and move to places like Aruba.

Send me that old bottle of his rum you have hidden behind your fake mash, and some of his pool shark winnings. I'll examine them and decide whether or not it's proof enough.

That's where you get your pinky-sticking-out-when-you-drink ways, yes?
