Baby Chesapeake Diamondback Terrapin that is! I put him on hold yesterday and the breeder is mailing him to me next week. I hope it's a female because I have two males already.

My goodness, yes. What does the turtle seller's sexual orientation have to do with anything? ::)
:D
So how about some photos of your boys, Skeebs? I hope you don't keep them in a tiny tank.
I bet they're hoping for a female too. Good luck!

@Ann - didn't you say that you keep MattyD's boys in a tank err a jar - at the side of your bed?
Not sure I would want to see a photo of skeebs "boys." lol :o

Very cute! What a beautiful pattern.
-
I have been thinking about getting a turtle for awhile now . I need to do some research about what I would need to know about the care and how to keep a happy turtle .
One thing that has always botherd me about some breed of pets are how do you know if they are truly happy . I sometimes wonder if fish in an aquarium have all they need .
People accuse me of spoiling my dog by insisting on not leaving her in a kennel or being away too long . If I travel she either goes with or stays at home with a house sitter .

-_- now u just need a rat that can do karate.....and some ooze.

Thanks Ann. I keep them in a 100 gallon long tank with a basking area attatched.

Because the Isle of Man is a center for basking shark studies and because I quickly skimmed your post, I thought you said you had a basking shark attached. :o

Unfortunately with turtles you can't tell what sex they are till they reach about 3 inches in length, which is usually about the second to third year.

In my opinion, three inches would be a great reason for suicide.

I got the terrapin last week. It's about an inch and a half long and doing very well. Here is a pic of him sleeping under his heat lamp. Sorry for the poor quality, it was taken with my phone.

Snapped a quick picture of Ziggy today just before feeding time. In the pictures above he's smaller than a quarter. Now his shell is just under 3 inches, little guy is growing fast! I am surprised looking back at previous pics how much his shell has darkened.

What do you feed him ?

Actually I thought Rav's comment was cute. You just responded before me quickfingers.
-
Yeah are turtles hard to maintain?
-
What do you feed him ?
He eats a variety of food. I feed him some pelleted food made for turtles and give him chopped fish, shrimp, or clams when I can find them fresh at the store.
Yeah are turtles hard to maintain?
Depends... A little bit. The proper set-up cost around $300 at this size. That includes UVB lighting essential for their health. I have to do water changes weekly for this type of turtle because they're more prone to infection than other species. With that said, there are other types that remain relatively small and are much easier to care for.

Shit, Ford, that cracked me UP! I'm very tired so it was a deep internal snicker that came up as a growl in my throat and made my belly roll. And that's a good thing.
-
Ya'll gettin' tired of this yet? He was stretching out on his basking dock and allowed me to snap a quick picture without jumping in. Sometimes he does this with his front legs fully extended as well.

More pics! Judging from the fat head I think Ziggy might be a girl.
This is my 4 year old Texan Diamondback Terrapin, a nice big girl named Marley. Once again Ziggy's species hails from Chesapeake Bay, and are generally called Blue Northern Diamondbacks.
Marley is just under 7 inches long and a little over 5 inches across, she's heavy.

Yep, those are the ones. Just mount them in a closet painted white... don't forget a drainage pan. Note: keep in mind, they'll yield you minimal product as compared to the more expensive stuff.
My terrapins just use a UVB bulb.... just so you know, your question intrigues me.

Interesting, I am getting advertisements for a site called Turtleshack.com... a place I am vehemently opposed to. Their practice is akin to a puppy mill.

Yep, that is who i am getting ads from too. You should shoot a PM to Tim - he said if there were any objectionable ads he would look into them and could put them on the block list.

LOL Nooo seriously, it's one of the traits you can use to differentiate between the sexes.
The females actually get a lot bigger than males. Pic below is of a large female and two males.

Wow!
I hope that big female one doesn't show up at any turtle support groups -- cause there might be some straight turtles in the group that will start talking trash about her --- thinking that all straight female turtles are just like her -- and that's just not right!! And, she probably has a great personality.

I'm glad you enjoy your babies. Here is my pure-bred multicultural. I was so happy when Bill got her for me on my 35th birthday. He didn't belive dogs belonged in the house. He thought that if animals were in the house, they belonged on your plate. My gal is almost 10.

There's been a new adddition to the family. I've been on a waiting list for 6 years for this little fellow. This is another subspecies of Terrapin, an Ornate Diamondback Terrapin:

WOW! What a wonderful looking little creature.
Awaiting further bulletins...

He's so BEAUTIFUL! I love how he is giving you the "stink eye" in the pics. LOL.
How big will he get?

Cute!

Very Cute. Have you named him/her ? :)

He does look like he has a bit of an attitude, huh? If it's female it will grow to about 6 to 9 inches long at the shell, and if it's male it will grow no longer than 4 to 6 inches.
Very Cute. Have you named him/her ? :)
Having trouble coming up with a name. I won't know what sex it is for another year or so. So far I've given two females men's names so perhaps I should hold back. My wife wants to name it Rasta to go along with the other two names of Ziggy and Marley (both female).
I lent Marley to a breeder in North Carolina in a deal for this new little guy/gal. The breeder says it was temp sexed for female.... but I've heard that before concerning my other two who were supposedly males.
Any ideas?
-
Is Rasta a name? Rasta in Hindi means "way" or "route". :)
For a turtle I like the name "Squidgy". :)
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=squidgy
-
Congrats.
What does that mean? "temp sexed for female?"
Do you keep them together or separate?
How about Haile (as in Selassie?)
And congrats on the move. I'm so happy for you. Talk to Mike (bocker) about restaurants.
-
I'd go for Rasta. If it's a boy, you could amend it to Rasta Man.

It's short for Rastafari (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rastafari_movement).

Congrats.

Hey Robert! I hope all is well on your end. Regarding your question about temp sexed --after the female lays her eggs breeders incubate the eggs at certain temperatures to achieve a desired sex; at 78 degrees they will be all hatched as females, and at 81 degrees they all are hatched as males. Any temperature in between is supposed to give a sexual mix of sorts.
I have to keep the little one separate.... the others may confuse it for a snack. He is just a tad smaller than a nickel.
I like Haile, but I like Selassie even better. Ann mentioning Rastafari even sparks my interest....
And congrats on the move. I'm so happy for you. Talk to Mike (bocker) about restaurants.
Thanks Rob, much appreciated. Did you ever get that 4 wheeler to run correctly? Didn't know Mike was near Boston..

hmmm, that's a good idea too.
I might have to get some more to go along with all these great name ideas. ;) If Marley is successfully bred in the Spring I get first choice from the clutch as well. I currently have 3 of the 7 subspecies of DBT.
That's a dream for now until we get into a bigger place...
I've always liked the name Yurtle
Name already taken. When I was 6 years old I had a Japanese Reeve's turtle named Yurtle the Turtle, coolest one I've ever owned. She died when I was 32 of respiratory infection... the guy who gave her to me was a neighbor and he had her for 12 years himself.
More Turtle pics please!!!!!!
-Will
I'll get some more up soon. The little tyke is so skittish it's hard to get closeups without it diving for cover. Those pics above were taken about 4-5 feet away believe it or not..lol.
Spoil that baby as much as you can!
LOL you know it....
-
Wow, I cant believe he is barely bigger than a nickel! So amazing.
-
Jeeze, smaller than a nickel? I though s/he was at least two inches or so. Your camera must have an awesome zoom on it to get such a good picture of the little critter from five feet away!
-

Uh?
No, the 4wheeler is still sitting next to the barn. Hard to work on when 105' every day. Now that fall is here I can work on it.
Mike lives in Virginia but it seems like he's in Boston every weekend. Ok, maybe not that often but he sure knows the place and he loves food
-
Ann, it's not about size. LOL LOL

Cute pics!! he/she/it is only bigger than a nickle..? Wow amazing looking tiny creature!!
