Just another Update again :(
« on: October 20, 2006, 11:24:02 pm »
OK, we thought it wasn't such bad news yesterday.  WELL, that changed dramatically today  :(

The HIV doc asked Louie this morning if he had a DNR signed.  Reason being that his electrolights are all screwed up BIG TIME.  Potassium is off.  They did a veinal puncture and a pulmonary specialist was called in.  Something that I'm a bit confused about.  His count was 7.12 and from what I understood at 7.2 it is extremely dangerous, life or death for that matter and Louie wasn't far from there.  His blood is even more acidic than it should be which is not good either.

From what they found out so far he has thrush in his esophagus, sore spots in his stomach, NOW after x-ray and cat-scan he has pancreatitis, inflamation in his colin and lower bowels.  Doc things it may be CMV but they can not do a lower G.I. because he is too week to handle the procedure like it should be done.  They also started him tonight on TPN.  They are even thinking of putting in a pic line in his other arm because they already have an I.V. in his port in the left arm, PLUS another I.V. hookedup near his wrist.

So he'll have 3 I.V. sites probably by tomorrow, 1 of them is running 2 different solutions (saline, electrolits, potassium and anti-biotics).  Now they can't find the power of attorney that they scanned into the computer, plus his living will and the health care surrogate form.  So I have to bring it all back in again.  He's wanting to sign a more detailed one but because he's on Demoral for pain, he legally can not sign it.  So I have to use and invoke the power of attorney and health care surrogate form to sign the more detailed DNR/Living will.  Because when someone is under the influence of pain meds they can't legally sign documents like that.

Well the family is pouring in and so are friends from work and others to help out in any way that I need them to.  WHEW!!

That's it for now, if anything else changes (hopefully it won't) I'll keep you all posted.

Maybe I should start a blog to make updates easier for everyone, everywhere.  I'll bring my laptop with me this weekend and work on it while he's sleeping.

TY everyone for letting me vent.
Love and Light,
Michael

Hi Michael. Family & friends helping out sure is great. ...And, the I.V. solutions too. I hope they're solutions in every sense of the word and boost Louie's levels back to good.

Wishing you strength from above,
A

Well everyone, on top of having his port in the right arm, they had to put a pic line in his left arm to get more I.V.'s hooked up.  The TPN has been running for 24 hrs now and they are keeping it going around the clock.  Plus at least 2 other I.V.'s running through his pic line.  They had a bit of a problem getting the pic line in.  They guess he had a spasm because all of a sudden they said they lost the vein, it shrunk on them, so they got another one and it's all hooked up finally.

One nurse said he shouldn't go out and have a cigarette.  I told her he's wearing a yellow wrist band so he's a DNR and if he wants a cig he's going to get one.  So I moved the I.V.'s from the pole as well as the pump onto the pole of the wheelchair and we were good to go.

The other nurses and employees laugh when I tell them we're trying to escape and run away.  I do have to say that out of al the hospitals he's been in since we've been together this is one of the best ever.

He has a private room and the PCT and Nurse are always asking if Louie's mom or I need anything.  He never has to wait any longer than 2-3 minutes for anything he needs, no matter what time of day.  Even when we need help opening up a dooor to get the wheelchair through, when an employee sees us they stop what they are doing and give us a hand, most without even having to ask.  I was shocked at that.  Even when they are on their break they are offering to help.  His pump started beeping when we were outside and an R.N. who was on break came over and made sure we were O.K.  Other hospitals we've been at, they wouldn't even look our way.

The PCT even brought in a chair that converts into a bed so his mom or I could stretch out during the day if we wanted to and we'd have it there when I decide to stay the night with him.

I'm doing a bit better myself as well.  Just thought I'd give you all an update.  Hopefully things stay going good and we don't get anymore troubling news.

TY for your thoughts and prayers.

Love and Light
Michael

Hi Michael,

I've been following your story and I thought I'd let you know that you, your sweetie and family are on my daily forum "sending love, light and positive energy" list.

I'm so happy to hear that you are at such a good hospital. I know how the attitude of the staff can make a huge difference at times like these. I'm also glad you're doing better yourself. It's so important that you look after yourself.

Well, anyway, just wanted to say hi and send a few hugs your way.

((((Michael))))

Michael,
I haven't been on in about a week.  I am so sorry Louie has to be going thru this.  My prayers are with him.  It sounds like he is getting some good care at the Hospital, hard to find nowadays.  I hope you are coping well.  It is hard being on the healthy side and seeing your loved one in such pain.  My thoughts and prayers are with you and Louie.  Much Love Rachel

I don't know much about you, except the pain and worry in your words. I have spent my share of hours at a hospital bedside the last 6 months. It is so frightening not knowing what will happen. Your partner is lucky to have you there looking out for him and a caring hospital staff is like a breath of fresh air. Hang in there and don't forget to take care of yourself, too.

You are in my thoughts and prayers.

I just loved the ALLSTATE comment  ROFLMAO   I needed that.

Not much has changed, still pumping lots of different things into him to get his levels back to near normal.

I'm learning to not ask "what can happen today?"  because again more news today.  His hemoglobin and hematric rate are extremely low so they gave him 2 units of whole blood today.  What an ordeal.  He made it through the 1'st one with no problem, blood pressure was up a bit but we were told that's to be expected.  As I'm typing this he's going through the next unit of blood.  Had to get his mom and me home for some sleep, which I'm getting ready to do.  I gave the nurses instructions to contact me after the 15 minutes of monitoring so they should be calling shortly.

He's sleeping a lot which is normal considering everything that they are pumping into him.  He was actually able to drink a small cup of Pepsi, he had a craving for it.  He also had 2 small containers of chocolate milk, his favorite, and kept them both down as well.

That's a GOOD sign.

TY all again for the thoughts and prayers.  I've had mixed emotions reading them, some moved me so much that they brought tears to my eyes, others made me laugh.  A very good combination of both.

TY TY TY TY TY TY TY

Love and Light,
Michael

Michael,

I'm encouraged by his small appetite and the good care you are all receiving at the hospital.

This next statement will be hard for you to do...but I also encourage you to get enough rest so that you don't fall ill yourself.  I've seen many family members run themselves ragged by staying at the hospital all the time.

Take care of yourself, so you can take care of him.

Thinking of you both,
John

Rev,

My Uncle signed a POA while he was on pain meds.  We had an attorney, witness, and a doc present and they all asked him his intentions and walked him through it.  So far, it has held up.  I also know that in extreme circumstances, the attorney told me that the POA could have actually have been video-taped!

Anyways...Hoping the best for you and your partner.  Is he on haart meds?  This is very similar to what my Uncle went through, and he pulled through.  His kidneys were a mess...and it turned out it was from 7 plus years of viread.  Once he stopped the viread, he had a miraculous recovery.  He isn't 100% yet, but it is night and day from his previous condition.  We went through the DNR and everything just like you.

Take Care
Maestro

Dear Michael,

What a story, it must be frightening for both of you. At least it sounds like the hospital staff is doing a good job. I really hope everything is going to be allright finally.

I'll light a candle for you too, sign of hope.
