Title: Egrifta, Oy
Post by: oksikoko on June 24, 2013, 08:07:45 am
Is there any way to let the ad sales department at Poz know that the Egrifta ads make the forums nearly unreadable by phone? I'm sure Egrifta is a lovely medication, and this question has nothing to do with the product or the ads, but rather with the mechanism of display.

It's next to impossible to hit the "X" target to close the window without triggering the ad, and the ad covers most of the visible area on the screen. For iPhones, for example, it's recommended that your targets be at least 44x44 pixels. This one is maybe 15.

I would spend more time reading the forums and have a better user experience if I could do so more easily by phone (more time spent + better UX = more ad sales, we all win). I use my phone for most things, but for Poz.com's forum, the user interface necessitates a desktop or laptop or patience. It's becoming more and more glaringly out of date in this respect.

As an aside, it's very quaint how the forum profile page asks for ICQ, MSN and AIM but not Twitter or Facebook. :)

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Note: I'm not criticizing the forum or the publication or its advertisers. I have three goals, none of which to my knowledge violate the rules:

1) To find out if someone can pass it along that the display mechanism of the Egrifta ads helps mar phone participation. This is not necessarily a 'first world problem' since in many parts of the world particularly hit by HIV/AIDS, phones are the primary way of accessing online material.

2) To complain about the near impossibility of hitting that tiny 'X' without opening a new window. Because it's irritating.

3) To wonder aloud how these forums have remained so mobile-unfriendly this late into the mobile era. I suspect

a) the software that runs them isn't portable to any mobile-friendly format and
b) there aren't resources to do it in-house or
c) there isn't the willingness to simply reboot and start over with more future-looking software since the existing forums are gold for SEO purposes as well as serving as an online encyclopedia of sorts.

I'm sure the marketing execs initially thought "wow, these POZ Forum members are really interested in our product!" and then upon closer inspection realize it is GSOgymrat accidentally hitting the pop-up on his phone every... single... time.

For what it's worth, I gave up trying to look at this site (Poz.com, or the forums) on my phone. I suspect that the advertisers see accidental openings of their ad as a good thing rather than a bad thing.

Oh well, its a good thing that here we are - pozies sitting around and one of our worries are the ads that are popping up.  I guess its also a good thing that we are such a limited market that we don't warrant updating the user interface.

best,
jm

I'm not familiar with this particular software, but when I was employable, I was employed at things like updating technologies and web processes (etc.) on sites like this. If the data isn't easily portable from this system, then they're sort of stuck. If it were portable, they could just do a data dump and plug a new database into a new interface. There would be a few hours of downtime, then {poof} new Poz.com forums - retaining the archives. There's no way they'd just dump everything and start over, the technically and logistically easiest solution, not with the forum playing such a large role in Poz.com's high rankings on basically any HIV-related search question. Any update would be rather expensive, and things are still not great for publishers' bottom lines. I would argue that updating the interface here (and the rest of the site, egads!) would be a good investment of any available funds, but so would everyone else about their department's projects.

My point it that I don't think it's about our worth as content consumers, but rather about not having the money to start working on what could become a large data headache very quickly and not having initially (years ago) chosen software with this eventuality in mind.

I'm just guessing, though.

Exactly. You only know ICQ on account of you're European. ;) The only people I've ever known who used ICQ were in the former Soviet states of Eastern Europe.

At lunch today I reviewed a final exam a colleague made up. The reading comp text was some prehistoric article about devilish rock music and computer games, circa Marilyn Manson - Columbine 1999.
I changed it all up since were supposed to use "authentic" texts and tasks, meaningful to college students.  Colleague was annoyed and bewildered.....

Both understandable and human, to feel a bit annoyed if someone even indirectly and no matter how politely, says you're behind the times.  Which is why I took my own time to make the edits.
So, always meddle into such matters with kid gloves, right...  ;)

They use video games to train doctors and fighter pilots now. Satanists have better things to do.

Apparently some pre-Colombian celebrity named Cher performed for the first time in a decade on one of your television programmes. I'm told this is significant because her last appearance was 2003. How was that a decade ago? (OMG, I'm old.)

Cher announced her retirement in 2001 to come after releasing her album Living Proof and embarked on a "Farewell Tour" in 2002. Well the tour went on. and on. And then it was so successful it went on and on and on. It ended in 2005 but needless to say, Cher did not.  A few fans grumbled that they paid to see her say goodbye, and wow there she was again on the same tour, years later, saying it again and again. Most of course, were delighted.

Meanwhile, Caesars in Vegas built the 100 million dollar Colosseum for Celine Dion in a show biz game changer.

And Celine went on and on and on until Caesars freshened the show to bring "retired" Cher onstage for 180 million for a 3-year run starting in 2008. (alternating with Bette Midler, and I don't know how much Bette got.)

180 million.........  :o :o 8) ::)

I have certainly frustrated using my phone.  Hitting the x was almost impossible.  The ad would often move around, like it was playing a game of tag.  Of course, it could have been my phones browser.  But, I'm actually using my phone to type this.  So far, so good.

I do think the layout of this forum is superior to others.  Before finding this site, I went to The Body's forums.  The layout was so confusing and not user friendly.  It was just ugly.  They were using some old software.  I immediately signed off and went searching for another.

Modified:  I left out a word in the first sentence, using my phone.

I have heard that many users have a similar experience on Adam4Adam. When they attempt to click on the link to see "all users" who have viewed their profile they are directed to a live pay to view webcam site. The link for the web cam site is larger than it appears and it must be on purpose, Just sayin.

Here's a scam for you. Up until recently, it was legal in Switzerland for scammers to send text messages to cell phones which were "collect on delivery". You accidentally opened the message and got charged 2 CH (about 2 bucks). I kid you not. Outrageous.

Well, like many of us here (not on this thread) I am behind the times. I get a bit of a kick out of some who would rather watch TV on an iphone or ipad instead of a big screen TV.
I don't really get why people are obsessed with twitter. I'm sure it can come in handy for some but I prefer to remain "unwired". I rarely ever use my cell phone and certainly don't have the "need" to keep it in my pocket at all times.
Just me.  :)

Oh, don't think I like Twitter just because I find it odd that it's not included. It was fun before all the people showed up in 2009, but that's when I stopped listening.

I mean, I do have a new one, but I mostly use it to track my hallucinations, so there's maybe 100 tweeters tweeted on my twitters in total.

And this is the off topic forum. You are required by law to be off topic.

And I have heard that Tumblr is Twitter's dark twin. High school and college students have left Facebook because their parents are all there. And  (I have also heard) the high resolution graphics make Tumblr the perfect site for porn! Very popular among the gays. Plus, unless you reveal your Tumblr name to someone it's not possible for them to find you - or your dirty secrets.

I'll Tumble for You!

Don't you mean, "I'll Tumbl for You"? "I'll Tumblr for You"?

I think since Yahoo! bought Tumblr, its days as "that place" are numbered. Yahoo! likes advertisers, but advertisers do not like their products shown on blogs devoted to naked cartographers in XXX scenes (there's a tumblr for everything).

In a way I went "off topic".

I do need to keep up with who acquires what. I don't think we can get any briefer than Snapchat and Tumblr isn't really meant for smartphones. Vines - but that's not that different from Snapchat.......

Yes.
I don't know if its porn based. It seems very linked into other accounts which are not incognito...  I just joined and tested a few vids last week and its better for vids to facebook than facebook's own (new?) method.
It will only be interesting I think when enough friends / family are using it, and then it is very interesting, in my opinion.

As for the young, and the jerk off.  well
1) really be glad you are NOT in youth's headspace.  Too many have this cyborg sexuality that really is half real world, half virtual.  It seems for certain to be quite complicated, heavy and alienating...
2) just send the jo stuff to guys your own age, hey why not? nobody's stopping you and there's probably an audience....

Luckily (I guess) it no longer exists, but when I got bored things happened and some stuff too sometimes... Then there were those events. Oh, my.

To make a long story short, recently I hooked up in the middle of the night with a young god living mere shouting distance from my chandeliered Cage a Folles salons.

To make a long story shorter, the thing relating to this thread is, his fetish floored me. DU JAMAIS VU.

During our assignation, he furiously kept up 4 virtual communications, on 2 macbook pros and two iPhones.  So 5 contacts at the same time. And i got the short end - the sex act - agreed upon in advance, was monotonous, amateurish, and bad.

I stayed until I didn't because i was fascinated, thought it was sort of hilarious, and our communication was novel and held my interest.

I concluded that was 4 online personalities because otherwise why the necessity of four devices?

I told my shrink about it she was pretty floored too.

Yeah, but Instagram has video now, so Vine's honeymoon is probably over. They were right place, right time, which doesn't always stick. But what do I know? It stuck for that shitty piece of software called "Facebook" that people continue to use for some reason. Actually, not for "some reason", but for a reason called "the network effect", but that would be a dull thing to say.

As for the headspace created by infinite porn options: I think, yes, there are serious ramifications to the freely available nature of all types of very specific erotica, some of which we won't know for years, but some of which affect some of us most of the time when approach members of the same sex who've visited machomoe one time too often.

I just never saw someone do so much virtual and real simultaneously.  So much virtual...  It was uncanny...

Then it was even more about the hunt. That sort of high increases the feeling of reward we get for finding things - it works on the dopamine rush that you get when, for instance, you hear the ping of a new e-mail which we're wired for to help us find berries, etc. back in the day. Amplify that little rush by sex  and by testosterone and by (I assume) meth, and it's very easy to follow four simultaneous conversations - with a dopamine ping for each message in each possible encounter. Primates get better dopamine hits upon the possibility of reward than they do with the reward itself. I learned this recently in a genetics course online, so take it with a grain of salt.

He's not looking for sex, I would repeat, no matter how much it looks like he is. He's looking for the rush he gets every time a new possibility for sex appears. Whether or not sex happens or is good or bad is completely irrelevant. In addition to the genetics class, someone who isn't me has personally been in rooms where all individuals were looking at the possibility of naked men on their iPhones instead of the (sometimes model-quality, swim does live in NYC) actual naked men in the room. At the end of swim's days hanging out in such parties, he had a rule that once the first iPhone appeared, he was out the door, because that was a signal nothing else was going to happen that would be any fun. Eventually, swim learned his lesson and stopped going to such events in the first place. Mostly. Primates do get more dopamine from the possibility of rewards than from the rewards, after all. Or as someone else put it, "hope is the thing with feathers".
