This little clip should be seen by every home buyer. A DVD supplied with the closing papers or signed lease on apartments. That woud be a landlords nighmare; especially slumlords.
What is very surprising is the tap from the screwdriver handle is not forceful by any means.

I've broken into my own apartment with a credit card before. It's pretty easy to do.

That's why I own a gun. I'm not kidding about that by the way... locks are nice... but I like having the added protection of being armed.

Well, I wasn't there to be honest.

My roommate was. And she kept hearing this knocking on the door, but she thought it was an ex-bf, so she ignored it and went into the living room to talk on the phone. Then, out of nowhere, she hears this crash... and sees that the door has been kicked in and there's the guy standing there. She screams "WHAT THE FUCK?" at him, and he ran off.

Which was, in retrospect, really really lucky. It could've ended a lot differently. So, we got a gun.

Plus... if you live in Richmond... well, this is like 6th most dangerous city in America or something... so, it's nice to have the extra security. Especially when your door's been kicked in.

Sorry to hear that. Yea...the door of a neighbor of mine was kicked in for a robbery. But also glad to hear that it wasnt some junkie who thought you owed him something....you know.

Philadelphia is 5th most for cities over 500,000. You could get into my place easily. I really should get renter's insurance but who wants to take porn, vinyl records and Finnish dishware?

This little trick showed up on YouTube about the same time as the vids on how to open Master Padlocks with a piece of aluminum can or a homemabe pick, and stories like the one in the Link are the favorites of every local news station, and rightly so. I first heard about lock Bumping in an article in Wired Magazine about 2 years ago, and now aparently lock picking is enjoying new underground popularity, Im sure that locksmiths are enjoying this all the way to the bank as well, Makes me glad we went with the good ol Brinks Alarm a few years back..

Yeah, I should get a dead bolt. I should also get metal bars on my kitchen windows which open right on to the fire escape. But alas these are pricey with installation.

Even the commercial do-it-yourself, adjustable bars would help to deter or discourage intrusion of amateur attempts. (Home Depot, Lowe's, Sears, Wally World, Ace hardware stores) As was stated earlier, if a pro wants to get in they'd likely use the front door. It's not what you've got so much as what they think you've got that fuels random intrusion. Of course , I know you already know that. Just rambling on a bit to make my point.

The way I look at all of this stuff. If they REALLY want to get in, they're going to do it anyway. I know that's lame of me, but that's how I think. If I got renter's insurance that would solve more than investing in locks and bars. I have one dead bolt already.

I live on the top floor (4th) of a non-ritzy building. Something tells me they'd try another building in this neighborhood before they would try mine. I do pack up my iMac in my box and hide it at the back of my closet whenever I go on a trip.

My house has a security system but one has to set the alarm to benefit from it... With 4 dogs who bark madly upon hearing a leaf falling outside I have a sense of security that may be false but it's comforting nonetheless. Who knows they'd greet an intruder with open paws and wagging tails?

I've had 2 apartments broken into over the years and the first, especially, really made me paranoid for years. There's nothing like coming home to find your front door open and the entire contents of your hovel scattered all over the place. All the bastard(s) got was my cheap $200 stereo system, a Brownie camera (which was my family's so had sentimental value only) and my bag of pot. I replaced the pot first for medicinal purposes and, since I was a piss-poor city civil servant without credit or a credit card, I asked one of my sister's ex-boyfriends, who owns an electronics store, to let me pay over time for a new system. Hank graciously agreed. At that time in my life I would have gone mad without my music.

The 2nd burglary took place on April Fool's Day, 1987 (or 1988). The bastards pried the front, bolted window open and entered during broad daylight. Again the stereo system was taken, TV, and of all things one of those stupid oil heaters that looks sorta like an old radiator. When I came home early my 20 pound black terrier mix Cookie and bedraggled, toothless FIV+ cat FFC were both under the bed.

If someone gets in my house they'll probably take a look around and leave since it appears ransacked already. No matter how often I clean (1 or 2 times a year...) my bad habit of putting everything on a surface (table, counter, anything horizontal) until there are layers of old mail, empty UPS boxes, catalogs, random shoes, crap the cats dragged out or off of something, and myriad other objects make the place messy in a few weeks. I really need a keeper at this point.

One of the cats knocked Joni Mitchell's Clouds CD to the floor where one of my male dogs obligingly peed on it. With pets like mine who needs burglars?
