I wonder how long it will last when 80% of their tourism suddenly dries up..

I suspect the Ganja Vaca will return just about the time I've saved up enough spare change for a trip over there.  Plus there's always Dee's place over in Cali, so either way I'm covered.

Exactly.  Let's face it:  only a certain amount of people go there to get bummed out at Ann Frank's, and I don't think I could make it to go somewhere like that without a visit to one of the coffee shops first.

Seriously.

There is a lot to do in Amsterdam besides scoring pot.   ;D
Its sad that these countries are veering right. Denmark wants to close its legally required open borders.

Agreed

I would think that without a bump of Kush some of the luster would be lost on these too:

I guess how many revolutions per minute would become something that mattered when the new restrictions take effect.

Well, it is sad, I must admit.  As someone said above, they've threatened this before as well.

From the linked article: "In order to tackle the nuisance and criminality associated with coffee shops and drug trafficking, the open-door policy of coffee shops will end,"

How stupid. Every time I was in Amsterdam, the only nuisance or criminality associated with drugs was the shady characters who hung out in some of the narrow thoroughfares who wanted to sell you hard drugs like coke, crack, crystal or heroin. Nobody ever slunk out of a shadow to accost you with a hard-sale line for pot. All they're going to accomplish by cracking down on the coffee shops is to drive pot sales underground and out into the shadowy narrow streets.

When will the right-wing idiots ever learn?

I've been to Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Utrecht and loved all three places. I particularly liked the University atmosphere in Utrecht. I wouldn't mind living in the Netherlands myself one day - but of course if the right-wing keeps gaining in popularity like it did in the US, the Netherlands may end up losing that lovely, laid-back attitude. That would be a great loss.

What I liked the most about Rotterdam was the unusual architecture, like this place:

I hope you're right about the Dutch not putting up with too many right-wing shenanigans.

Ann, the interior is very impractical. My brother in law owns one, and it's been for sale for almost 4 years now. Nobody wants them once they've been inside.

I always wanted this impractical apartment.  One of those 1920's to 1940's towers downtown in a city with pretensions of grandeur.  A nice three story loft in the needle of a proto-skyscraper in Columbus, or Denver, or Milwaukee or Memphis.

We went on a tour of one and I thought it would be pretty cool to have as a holiday home, but no so much for everyday living.

right wing politicians want to arise this discussion, among others, such as immigration, just only to hide their repsonsibilities in the real problems people is facing. In Amsterdam, for instance, housing is very expensive, there are no many houses/apparts available, many people chooses to live in boats, occupied buildings (squats) or just simply have to move to another city. Local authorities do not do anything to solve this.

It is the same, right now, all around Europe, wherever you take a look: Italy, France, Germany, Spain; Denmark...

That all this right wing "tournage" in politics will affect public healthcare services for HIVers and other people with chronic ilnesses is just a matter of time.

That said, Amsterdam do worth a come back, always. The best thing of this city is its people. I hope they manage to keep that spirit alive!!

Hugs!

love is blindness...  a wonderful song!

Greenlight for the "wietpass"

The Legal Council declared today that the European Common Law and the Dutch constitution, allows that only residents of the Netherlands can be "clients" of the coffeeshops.

I wonder how many locals are willing to register for such a pass/card; another compromise of privacy.
