Title: I was exposed to pt's blood
Post by: may37632 on May 29, 2009, 01:20:09 pm
I am a medical researcher. The patient's blood was dropped on my hand. Unfortunately, my glove was broken and the blood directly contact with my skin. I moped with alcohol and washed with soap and running water. My skin is intact. The patient has brain tumor, but didn't check HIV status. What should I do next? Thank you.

You don't have to do anything else because you didn't have a risk for HIV transmission. It's sad to know that you as a medical professional haven't been properly educated by your hospital or elsewhere about HIV transmission and what the real risks are. You'll find a link to it in the Welcome thread which opens this section.

Having blood touch your skin is a not a risk even IF the patient is HIV positive. Please read our lesson on transmission so that you will become better educated.

This time there is no cause for further concern nor any need for testing on your part.

Cheers.
