Women Organized to Respond to Life-threatening Diseases
« on: April 16, 2008, 06:20:16 pm »

Just passing along an item that was forwarded to me today on a local YahooGroup.  Anyone responding to this group might wish to take them to task with their outreach strategy, particularly for its timeliness vs a 4/22 deadline, as well as the wobbly hyperbole, e.g. "twenty-seven years into the HIV apndemic"  (HIV was raoming other nations for decades before its manifestations among Gay men were noted in the CDC's MMWR in 1981)

Namaste,
David
____________

300,000 women in the United States are living with HIV... yet there is no unifying voice that represents a wide and diverse community of HIV-positive women in the U.S.  Twenty-seven years into the HIV pandemic, this is about to change...

WORLD (Women Organized to Respond to Life-threatening Diseases) is launching a U.S.-based national Positive Women's Network.  The Positive Women's Network (PWN) is a membership body consisting of HIV-positive
women designed to strengthen our power at a national level to demand and create policies and programs that fit the realities of our lives.

We are now accepting applications from HIV-positive women leaders to attend the first national visioning convening for this network which will take place in San Francisco in mid-June, 2008.

The application process opens April 1, 2008 and closes April 22nd, 2008.  You can fax completed applications to: 510.986.0341 or mail them to WORLD:  414 13th Street, Oakland CA 94612.

Please contact WORLD:  www.womenhiv.org, 510.986.0340, or pwn@womenhiv.org for additional
information.

Thank you!

Hello Redhot –

I am responding to WORLD’s announcement for the convening of the Positive Women’s Network  but will not be taking them to ‘task’ about their outreach strategy.   There are several hundred of we HIV+ women who have been working hard to circulate this news via our networks since March, with a vast posting on April 1st from the staff at WORLD, ample time for any woman to submit the application.

I have personally printed out the application for the convening in San Francisco in order to hand them out to women I know in the Sacramento area who do not have access to computers or email.

As for the ‘wobbly hyperbole’, WORLD is one of the oldest HIV/AIDS organizations in the United States, and only too familiar with the fact that HIV was “roaming other nations for decades” prior to the initial notations in the CDC’s MMWR in 1981. I believe that WORLD’s statement relating to the timeline of “twenty- seven years into the HIV epidemic” is merely echoing a commonly accepted ‘start date’ within the United States, and that they did not intend to signify anything other than that.

Your post about the application process and contact information is appreciated, and I will forward it to my colleagues at WORLD.

Perhaps you could contact your YahooGroup and inquire about the timeliness of their post to you?

Best regards,
Zephyr

the title of this post made me think how insane it is in the USA with all the riches and all the smarts and
with all the power of women and womens organizaitons that
universal health care is not available to women with breast cancer and other cancers
seems insane and impossible
i guess because i see women and the womens movement to be so
caring and supportive
but for hiv, breast cancer and many other cancers
even the power of half the population cannot
overcome the greed
the infinite greed of humans to profit from
disease
i do not count the Pharma companies in this group, i support them and even thier high prices
but the greed of the politicians that allow the
insane accumulation of riches
recently the top hedge fund managers 50 of them made 29 billion usd last year
this is evil and they all should be hung as traitors to thier country
when 100k persons die of cancer without treatment in usa
etc
such that greed wins out
