Broward County dragging butts with Welvista
« on: February 24, 2011, 11:59:41 pm »
Well, I am lucky enough here in Florida to still be able to get my hiv meds thru ADAP but my partner was transitioned over to Welvista (as everyone knows they are providing hiv meds to our state until april)........and he has been waiting for his meds for 9 days now. From what we read from the Broward County health department the whole process was supposed to be seamless and u just called in ur meds as normal and go pick them up at the ADAP pharmacy. But nope they have a whole separate person (Brenda is her name) handling the Welvista people. If u got transitioned to getting ur meds thru Welvista you have to call this Brenda person and ask for your refills. She told my partner (on Feb 16) his meds would be in last friday. Then an assistant of hers called him this past Monday and said middle of this week. Now it's Friday the 25th and still no hiv meds.......and no answers. Not even a return phone call.

This mismanagement is typical of this state. They have totally incompetent people running the show down here!

is your partner going without meds?

(this could very well be just another one of many reasons to do whatever is neccesary to store a backup supply of meds for yourself)

No i have a backup supply (not the same meds as his) and he is taking mine for the time-being. But that's not the point. He was supposed to get his meds in 48 hrs.......and it's been 9 days. I take combivir and viramune. He takes truvada and incentress. I just hope this doesnt lead to some resistance issues for him. About the backup supply point u make. Down here in Florida they only allow you to have a 30day supply of meds in your possession at a time which means u have to fill your RX at the same time every month....cant do it early. Luckily when I first tested poz I lived in Illinois and since they mail your ADAP meds to you .......they also let you fill your meds early so I was always able to fill my rx's in Illinois a week ahead of time and build up some backup.

This is how bad they are down here and how stupid. Back in like 2006 I wanted to transfer my meds from one ADAP pharmacy to one that was closer to where I lived. The pharmacy i was transferring to told me to bring my prescription bottles in and they would transfer them. Ok.......you will never believe this. When i took my rx bottles into the pharmacy i maybe had 5 days worth of meds in each bottle. They took my bottles.....opened them and threw away........YES......threw away into the trash perfectly good meds and wouldnt give me back my rx bottles. I was so mad. I asked them why they threw away my rx bottles that had pills in them and the guy responded "you are only allowed to have a 30 day supply at a time".  I was floored. So I sat there and waited 45 minutes for them to transfer and fill my next supply of meds. Now that i look back on what happened though and the fact that florida's adap is broke..........them throwing away perfectly good meds doesnt suprise me.

I really wish I had it in me right to to freaking move out of this horrible state. I'd love to live somewhere like Oregon or Washington state from what i've read online they have pretty good hiv services. Unfortunately my dog is in the middle of chemotherapy for lymphoma cancer (stage 1) so a big move would be a huge stress on him. Plus the fact that so much is in the air nationwide with ADAP's makes me nervous about moving anywhere b/c at anytime things can change in any state. I wonder how hard it is to get Canadian citizenship. I say, bring on the socialism!

Colorado has a good adap program, well at least they did when I lived there.  You only had to qualify for the Co. indigent care program and belong to one of aids projects, (sorry mr. codeine is kicking in and I can't think of the initials you all use.) and you were automatically enrolled in adap.  When my ex would call in his medicine he had it the next day, unless you called the day before a holiday.  the only catch is you couldn't have insurance, and if you made to much money for cicp you couldn't get adap.
Pa. isn't to bad either.  I get my meds from the local pharmacy.  They don't keep them in stock so I have to call about 3 days  before I run out. I can only order 30 day supply, ( I thought that was the way it is everywhere) but I can order a few days early.  I guess I'm glad I moved from Fl. a few years ago.  Since I haven't had problems here in Pa. maybe I will stay here.
Now if only my chest would stop hurting and I would stop coughing I will be happy.  Well happier, won't be to happy until I can hold my motorcycle up and ride it.
I agree with that one guy, (can't think of his name) this HIV stuff is a bitch.

Of course they do, because the Republican legislature designed it that way. I lived in Floriduh for 12 years and had to jump through their hoops for years. The system is purposely designed to be as inhumane as possible, because they really don't care if pozzies live or die. Actually, that is untrue, they really want us to die, so they can give more tax breaks to the rich.

As long as he started on your meds without interruption as soon as his meds ran out, there shouldn't be a problem. The only situation where there might is if he is already resistant to one or more of the meds in your combo - that could cause resistance to whatever med(s) he isn't resistant to in your combo. If he has no known resistance issues, it shouldn't be a problem.

Just make sure he lets his doctor know what he's had to do the next time he sees him/her.

My heart goes out to all of you in Florida or any other state having these horrific ADAP problems. It's outrageous. You should all move to the UK - and I wish you could.

No, actually I wish the "powers that be" would make the nation's health a priority like it should be. Never mind terrorists from over seas, it would seem most of the terrorists that America currently face are living high off the hog in office in Washington and the various state capitols. But that's not the point.
oh I hope you didn't think I was making the "backup" comment to you in particular. No, no. I feel terrible for the position y'all are in. :-* Have you spoken to an ASO about this to see if they can offer any help at all? Perhaps hearing of this someone here might be able to help.

I only make the backup comment because this is just this kind of situation to point out to everyone else how important a backup supply/stockpile is. (kinda like taking a couple extra days worth of meds when you go on a vacation. just in case) Being out of medications for a time can happen without anyone being at fault. Hurricanes, earthquakes, snowstorm, volcanoes etc. are other kinds of unexpected interruptions that can happen for a short period of time to most anyone most anywhere.

But throw in incompetence, poor budgeting, etc, and the situation can be more widespread. We've already seen people who having been using ADAP and receiving meds be "disenrolled". We're seeing ADAP programs on the verge of being defunded. And now here's one that has gone bankrupt. (and which could probably go bankrupt again next fiscal year and have this same issue again!) Even though plans were supposedly put into place, the best laid plans sometimes fail.

Some of us (the poor and/or those relying on government assistance) just don't have the luxury here in America to believe any longer that our meds will always be available. This is something everyone should think about and consider what they need to do to protect themselves.

(by the way, if anyone is interested, search this site for the word "stockpile" to read various tips and tricks about how to build up reserve of meds)

Ann,

No he doesnt have any resistance. His doctor did one of those resistance tests about 8 months ago on him and he has absolutely no resistance to any of the meds. My doc did one on me back in 2008 .....same result no resistance. I've been on the same meds for 12yrs since i first tested poz. I've never had to switch. I feel very lucky. He was on the same meds for 8yrs until this happened. I hope it's ok though when his meds do come in that he switches back to them. His truvada is in the same class as my combivir. However his incentress is in a different class than my viramune. He just did blood work a couple of weeks ago and went in for his doctor's appt today but his doctor was out sick so the nurse practioner gave him a copy of his labs. He has 974 tcells and is undectectable but that was before he switched to my meds. He says he feels fine after taking mine for about 5 days now so i assume that's a good sign. He doesnt like my viramune though b/c he takes methadone. Viramune interacts with methadone decreases the half life of methadone so he has some withdrawal from the methadone in bed at nite so he is anxiously waiting for his truvada and incentress to come in. The woman called this morning and said the box of meds they were expecting from Welvista came in and that she would give him a call when she got the meds sorted out and got to his. She told him he was the first person to get ahold of her about getting his meds from Welvista. Well she was supposed to call back today before 5pm so he could go get his meds but i bet u all can guess what happened. She never called and when we tried to call her number around 330-4 it went straight to voice mail. Typical. I bet if these meds she was dealing with was for her or for her husband or kids she'd have it taken care of and meds in hand. It's amazing how our society has slipped into this "me me me me" attitude. When i was a kid i grew up in a small town in southern illinois and everyone helped everyone and everyone cared about everyone. Seems like these days if there is an issue and it doesnt directly affect the person that is "supposed" to help u .....they just dont care.

Hi CardsFan,

I'm a member of the Fair Pricing Coalition, which was instrumental in helping negotiate the deal between Welvista and the state of Florida. My colleagues asked me to put you in touch with them. Can you send me a personal message with your email and phone number so that we can try and get this situation worked out as quickly as possible? It might be tight on a Friday afternoon, but we'll do whatever we can.

Best,
David

I'm sorry to hear about the situation in Florida.  Its horrible.  I live in Washington State and the HIV services are pretty good here.  Of course the state is broke like every other state and they are talking budget cuts.  I'm not sure how that will affect HIV services.   Funny thing is I have always wanted to move to Florida (Ahh the beaches and sunshine).  Reading your post is definately giving me second thoughts.  If only it didnt rain every day in Seattle.

I hope things get straightened out down there.  Good luck.

Hugs from Provincetown, Cape Cod, MA
Of course state budgets are tight everywhere, but the government in MA is controlled by Democrats & we have an excellent program called HDAP. Provincetown is also the headquarters of ASGCC, the AIDS Support Group of Cape Cod; we get case management, weekday lunches and weekly community dinners. Gay/HIV life here is very open and accepting.
CT is another state with a well funded ADAP program. Good luck with the Welvista.

if you are moving to Broward county, Do NOT have your shit together. I was dropped from 2 ASO's because I am "too good at it myself". Because I am organized , show up on time for appointments and always have all my documentation with me in my black "bible", 2 case managers have dropped me because " I can do the better job myself. They both did it last year when I going through chemo for cancer. As for Brenda at the health Department , she agrued that one of my meds Ive been getting for years from ADAP was not an HIV drug. I had to go get a copy of the formulary from someone else in her office to show it to her and I STILL went the entire month of January without it

I feel sorry for you guys in FL. My MA HDAP used to pay for my Medicare Part D "drug insurance" and that paid for all medicines Not just HIV medicines. I have private drug insurance now but HDAP still pays the co-pay on all of my drugs, for ulcers, allergies, high cholesterol and expensive anti-depressants. I can't imagine having a program that only paid for HIV drugs.
