very nervous
« on: September 25, 2006, 01:21:42 am »
I know this has been covered many times here but i was just wanting to put it out there...I was wanting to know how confident i should be in a neg test result at roughly 39 days....I was involved with a young lady for about 3 months and had unprotected sex with her.....I have been displaying symptoms for about a month now and took a test--hiv at 39 days and hep B/C tests all came back neg.....The doctor reviewed the blood work and stated that he saw no indicators of infection in any of the blood work...What indicators would he be looking for besides the HIV results and again is 39 days any kind of solid indicator......39 days is going from when my symptoms started so I am assuming a few more days could be added to 39 since the symptoms probably would not develop for a week or so........I have been a very worried and have actually found some comfort from this site..........You all are very amazing and very helpful.......I know symptoms is no way to diagnose yourself but I have had all of them in the most extreme case....

Howdy.

A test at this point would be an excellent indicator that you did not contract the virus. However, you should test at 13 weeks to be absolutely certain.

It is very difficult to transmit the virus female-to-male, so that fact, and given that it is unlikely your partner was infected to begin with, means you likely are fine, despite anything you may be interpreting as symptoms.

howdy,

We don't talk about symptoms here because symptoms, or even the lack of symptoms, means nothing when it comes to hiv infection.

You need to test at three months past your last episode of unprotected intercourse (not from the onset of any symptoms) for a reliable, conclusive result. Your 39 day test is not likely to change, but you need that test at three months for confirmation of your hiv negative status.

However, you have GOT to stop playing roulette with your life and health. You need to be using condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, every time, no exceptions until such time as you are in a securely monogamous relationship where you have both tested for ALL STIs together. To agree to have unprotected intercourse is to consent to the possibility of being infected with a sexually transmitted infection.

Have a look through the condom and lube links in my signature line so you can use condoms with confidence.

Anyone who is sexually active should be having a full sexual health care check-up, including but not limited to hiv testing, at least once a year and more often if unprotected intercourse occurs.

If you aren't already having regular, routine check-ups, now is the time to start. As long as you make sure condoms are being used for intercourse, you can fully expect your routine hiv tests to return with negative results. Don't forget to always get checked for all the other sexually transmitted infections as well, because they are MUCH easier to transmit than hiv.

Use condoms and avoid hiv infection. It really is that simple!

Howdy,

Your 43 day negative is even more unlikely to change. The vast majority of people who have actually been infected will seroconvert and test positive by six weeks and your test is over six weeks. The average time to seroconversion is only 22 days.

Test again at three months for a conclusive result, but I'm fully expecting you to test negative again. Please make sure you always use condoms from now on. OK?

No, neither herbs nor vitamins nor many other medications and such affect the accuracy of your HIV test.

And I too expect you will continue to test negative.

In the future use a condom everytime you have intercourse. No exceptions until you are in a securely monogamous relationship in which both partners test negative together.

Cheers,

Howdy,

With the test results you have so far, it is most unlikely that anything you are experiencing has anything to do with hiv. I suggest you stop looking at your body through the lens of hiv and if your problems persist, see your doctor.

If I went through what i thought were ARS symptoms in late July early August---- on August the 8th...I was hospitalized with Kidney problems...The DR stated that the vommiting and diareha were due to some sort of gastro infection which caused me to have kidney problems due to lack of food and fluids in body....I had just ended the realationship with the girl I was seeing...I was concerned at the time of HIV infection due to white tongue and all the other symptoms...I got tested HIV and HEP on September the 13th and had other blood work done... the DR told me everything looked great and HIV / HEP were neg......What i am wanting an opinion on is if those were ARS symptoms of me converting to HIV pos...Then wouldn't the Sept test have been indeterminate / possitive...I still have muscle pains....The other symptoms seem to be clearing up.....So my HIV test was done 37 days after hospital visit isn't it likely Sep tests would have shown something??????? Any info would be greatly appriciated....Thank you....

My 8-9 week (57-65 days) test just came back negative which is a good thing...I don't know what generation ELISA was done.. It was a blood draw that was sent to LABONE....How do my chances look now?...This has to be a good thing...Would it matter what generation test was used at this point?  The doctor wants me back in a couple months for one more test but doubts anything will change.... thank you...

Howdy,

At this point, the generation of test doesn't make much difference. That only makes a difference in the first few weeks.

The vast majority of people who have actually been infected will seroconvert and test positive by six weeks and your test is well over six weeks. The average time to seroconversion is only 22 days.

You don't need to wait "a couple months" for your conclusive result. A test at the three month point will be conclusive and I fully expect it to also be negative.

Howdy,

I've never seen it. I've never seen a six week negative turn positive at three months either. It would seem to be a fairly rare thing, but that's not to say it never happens and that is why we recommend getting that conclusive three month result.

So a negative at 12-13 weeks is definitely conclusive, regardless of generation of test and situation of exposure?

Yes, that's conclusive, you are hiv negative.

Now please, remember to use condoms in future, every time, no exceptions until such time as you are in a securely monogamous relationship where you have both tested for ALL STIs together. I am still having trouble putting this to rest.....Just some more follow up questions....

1. Do I need to worry about subtypes?
2. I still have these symptoms: pain in nodes, tongue jacked up, gaining weight only around stomach, fatigue, can't sleep, hair loss, trouble swallowing, seem to have spots in vision, facial hair seems softer than normal..
3. With these ongoing symptoms wouldn't a 12-13 week HIV test have shown something?
4. Wouldn't I have developed antibodies by now?
5. Would another virus like hep b / c cause me to not develop antibodies for HIV?
6. Since I was very ill in August could that have delayed antibody production?

If someone could please take the time to answere all these questions I would be so appriciative.....

Thank You very much

The reason it didn't show anything is because you were never infected. HBV and HCV or being ill will not stop the productions of antibodies nor would they lengthen the window period beyond 13 weeks. You need to accept the fact that you are negative and move on with your life.

You got it Howdy. Just make sure you always have protect anal and vaginal sex no matter what until you are with a person that you two have tested together and know each others status. Then you can throw the condom out the window. Then you only have to worry about having little Howdy's.
