Huzzah for March!
« on: February 28, 2007, 12:42:18 am »
Tomorrow is 1 March!  Spring!  Huzzah!

Daylight savings starts this month!  Late sun!  No more horrible depressing, craptacular snowy rains!  Jacket weather!  Tiny flowers!

Yes, March is a bitch and a half to get through... what with the cold nastiness it can shove on us quite suddenly.  But it's bearable because at least it's the end of the line for winter... so I say, bring on the goddamn March.

P.S. Apologies to my friends in the Southern Hemisphere... for whom this month means the days get shorter and colder.  You may rub it my face with gusto in come September.  Which is cool, because my birthday's in September, and I'll be too drunk to read what you're writing.   ;)

We don't really have winter dear. It just gets a little bit cooler at night. ;)

Really?

No traditional seasons or anything like that?

The things I've read about Australia seem to indicate that there's a more wet/dry seasonal shift... but I was left with the impression that that was on the Indian Ocean coast.

I always thought the east coastal areas of Australia were more temperate.

I have learned something.

One thing that will never induce me to leave the upper half of the East Coast is the four very well-defined seasons.  I'm ADD and require appropriate meteorological changes.

Well it depends.

Most of the Australian land mass is desert. We call that bit the GFA or the Great Fuck All. Hot, flat and blazingly hot during the day and correspondingly bitter at night - it makes Death Valley look like a cool oasis.

The north is tropical and subject to monsoons and cyclones and man eating reptiles. Ghastly.

I live in the central part of NSW which is temperate. We have distinct seasons. The summers are very hot, but the winters are mild. So when I say "we don't really have winter", I mean in comparison to the northern part of the US.

Sometimes it snows here though.

Does this signal the end of Piss on Benj month?

And, as Matty said, don't feel too bad for us, well those of us in NSW anyway. The 4 seasons rule doesn't really apply in Sydney. The local Aborigines identified 8 distinctive 'seasons', for want of a better term.

Sydney is pretty much mild all year round; Feb, the warmest month averages only about 80/85 farenheit; and July the coldest comes in at a fairly mild average in the low 60's f. Having lived reasonably close to the coast all my life, I've never seen a frost, let alone snow. Anything below 60 and I think I'm freezing my arse off, but it's not uncommon to have the odd day or two in the 80's in the middle of winter. The coldest day I can ever remember experiencing in Sydney was when I was at Uni doing a field in the mangroves of Botany Bay - it only hit about 9 C (48 or so f). I thought I was going to die.

1 March is officially the first day of autumn in Sydney, but with an average temp of 76 f,  I ain't complaining. It's the height of our wet season in Sydney for the next few months. Muggy and humid during the day with lots of big afternoon/evening thunderstorms with associated hail, downpours, thunder and lightning. My favourite time of the year.

Green?

If I saw green skies, I would immediately convert to the nearest convenient religion and begin praying to the appropriate deity.   ;)

hey jafi,

That would have been our godforsaken national capital, Canberra. A hot, dry, dusty, flyblown, soulless cesspit in summer and a dry, icy, bitterly cold, soulless cesspit in winter.
Full of politicians and bureaucrats of the worst sort. If you ever visit you would realise very quickly, it ain't New York. It's was 'designed' by an American, Walter Burley Griffin, as a modernist utopia. It works, in a sense, as there are no traffic jams but also no pedestrians, and you would have no idea that over 300,000 people live there, but it really is a city without a soul.
