Title: Oscars 2013
Post by: walkingpoz on January 09, 2013, 04:25:08 pm
I was wondering if you knew of any ways to get into the Academy Awards ceremony or one of the Oscar parties. Or Elton John's Oscar Viewing Party. Or at least to stand next to the red carpet. But I don't have press credentials nor have I won in the bleacher seats lottery. I have never been to L.A. during the Oscars so I have no clue if it's even possible. Maybe some of the California residents or previous Oscar visitors have ideas? But of course I'd love not to go to jail for party crashing.

If you have any catering or special events management experience you could try to get a job with one of the many companies involved in these events. They hire people VERY experienced in the job they are hired for, not amateurs.

Plain and simple, you're not going to get invited as a guest unless a big star invites you as a companion. Or of course, if you are a star.

I don't know what company hires the seat fillers for the Oscars. But here's one man's story:  Maybe that can give you some ideas.

I went to many big benefits and balls when I worked in philanthropy. But private parties are private parties. Its harder to get into the Vanity Fair party then the Red Cross Ball or Literary Lions or the Costume Institute.  The Costume Institute was the easiest party to crash in the 80's and 90's!  Just wait til after dinner for the dancing, and either be young and beautiful yourself, or at least in blacktie and with a gorgeous woman.

My brother continues to say he knows Elton.  My brother worked at Backstreet, as a bartender in Atlanta a few years back.  Elton has a home there, or did.  My brother claims to have been to his home.

He also claims he was hired to go on Elton's China tour, but something political happened, so the tour was cancelled.  It may have been that incident, where China had captured some of our military personnel in the early 2000's.  He's not one for making up stories, but I think he's making it seem they knew each other better than they did.

The Elton John Oscar party is a benefit for his foundation. Its A list so they easily sell all the tickets/tables at whatever price they want, and the foundation pretty much decides which fat cats can buy them.  (If you feel like shelling out 4 grand for HIV/AIDS, who knows, call the EJAF and ask if you can buy a ticket. ejaf.org/events)

Its in tents across from the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood. There might be a place to view arriving guests at the Elton John party that is more accessible than the viewing at the Dolby Theatre.

The Oscars red carpet is not viewable from the street, only from the stands.

If the Vanity Fair party is at the Sunset Tower Hotel on Sunset Boulevard, you can see the stars arrivals from across the street - there's a Starbucks and a steakhouse. (Bring binoculars and you'll see how old everyone is and all the makeup.)  But the sidewalk on the hotel side of the street is blocked up as is the real "red carpet" where the stars pose for the photographers.   Vanity Fair gives some invites to some charities to sell but its not basically a benefit party.

I've met Stephen Fry and talked to him (about hiv) in my living room for nearly five hours. And I have two DVDs and a few photos to prove it. Does that count? Don't know if Mr Fry attends the Oscars though. ;D

Oh, looky here... a Star-fuckin' race.

I was Prince's (as in the tiny musician from the 80's and 90's) sort of "personal" shopper some time around 1994-1996.  He would come to the music shop that I managed and demanded to be assisted by the nice "Cuban" guy.  Otherwise he'd leave.

I also helped Sharon Stone, Gloria Estefan, and other celebrities from the Spanish acting/music world.  :P

They were actually human, like OEMGEE.

Now shake your dicks/clits; the pissing contest is ovah.  Though I expect a certain someone to claim next that they got their AIDS from Rock Hudson.

Being a tired ol' shop girl, is well tired. I didn't get AIDS from Rock Hudson I gave it to him. Talk about star fucking.

I rode with Sheryl Crow on her tour bus from Atlanta to Memphis and have been back stage at many of her concerts. Been to her parents house in Kennit MO. On the way to Memphis she dissed the dirt on Elton after he had her over for lunch before her concert in Atlanta. Yes, he is a bitch.

I love me some Sheryl.  Still play her first three albums every now and then.  We met her backstage once in 1992, a few months before "All I Wanna Do" became a pop hit.  I remember the rep from her label kept on saying that she was the next big thing, but at the time I didn't think that "Leaving Las Vegas" was good enough for a crossover.  I think it may have been at a Duran Duran concert.  Foggy memory.

And, for the record, I detest miss Elton.  Overrated.

The ACT UP documentary, SURVIVING A PLAGUE, has been nominated in Best Documentary category. A couple of ACT UPpers will be attending.

Hope it wins. I don't have any speaking in it but I'm in several of the vintage clips. Peeps are psyched about the nomination.

heh... yeah. I made my contribution just to be annoying in the tried and true Miss PeePee tradition. ;D

So what was Prince like personality-wise?

I used to run into Rick Wakeman (from Yes) quite often in my local grocery store. Another really tall person. One time I asked him to get something off a top shelf for me that I couldn't reach and he looked at me like I had two heads, but got it for me anyway. He had a music shop just down the road for a while, but he moved back to England about ten years ago (if memory serves).

We've got quite a few celebrities living on the Rock - they usually cite the fact that nobody here really gives a shit about celebrity as their reason for living here.

Back when I lived in L.A., and worked in Beverly Hills, I interacted with all kinds of people.

Among them were Liberace (he was a very sweet man and very cordial), Rock Hudson (always had an entourage with him), Rod Stewart (he was a jerk), Vincent Price (who gave me a lamb marinade recipe and both he and his wife were real dears), and Lauren Bacall, who is a gracious and lovely lady inside and out.)

There were many others who came through. Most were very nice. Poor Danny Kaye came in when he was quite elderly and was suffering from dementia. But his family/caregivers handled things very well.

Anyway, those were good days.

HUGS,

Mark

That is really something. Congrats to Peter, et al!

We are all keeping our fingers and toes crossed for the longest time that How to Survive a Plague will get an Oscar for best documentary,  Just garnering an Oscar nomination is a big honor to David France, Peter Staley as well as Andy Velez, Tim Horn and all the other men and women who were instrumental in securing the medications we need to stay alive when so many others told us we would be dead soon enough.  Now we can wait for the awards ceremony with baited breath, it is already a winner!

How have so many of you already watched "How to Survive a Plague"?  Even with a pre release order, it's not available til the end of February.  Am I missing something?  Not hard to imagine. :o  There haven't been any screenings even close to our neck of the woods.

I saw that option when placing my order but I don't know what that really is or how to do it.  Can you burn the movie or is it a one time only view?  I also don't use any of those tech devices they cited.  I barely use a cell phone these days.

When you buy it Amazon stores the movie in "Your Video Library" on your Amazon.com account.

You can then watch the movie as often as you want forever and ever.

You either watch it streaming to your computer or to your tv (you can stream to your tv using an xbox, roku, googletv, or most new tv's can do it on their own).  You just click the watch it now button and the movie starts playing.

No, you dont burn the movie to a disk.  Disks are sooo 2002.

Yes, mine is vintage. It is an Emac, the predecessor of the Imac. It is what is known as a power PC, which they don't make software for any longer.

I still don't completely understand how to implement those options so I'll be watching it by the end of next month on a DVD.  I already ordered it and will watch it on my antiquated, combo DVD/VCR machine.   :o

I am sure everyone remembers how I am BFFs with Enrique Iglesias.  I've met some famous people--shook hands with both Presidents Clinton and Obama.  But, it was the 2am run-in with Enrique outside the hotel that was the most intimate.

On an award show note, did Jodie Foster come out at the Globes or what?  She seemed to allude to it, but her speech was so strange.  I loved Will Ferrell's and Kristen Wiig's category introduction.  Tommy Lee Jones didn't seem too amused, but I've been hearing he's a meanie.

Well, I would have to go back and watch it again.  Sometimes, things come off differently at first glance especially when others in the room are talking over the speeches.  She seemed to be rambling.  Perhaps the discussion over her love and defense for Mel distracted us, and we didn't really give it a good listen.  I didn't record it, but I will try to find it online.

My press conference was held on Facebook a few years back, but many already knew or suspected.  I took questions.  Helen Thomas got the first question, as was customary.

Modified:

George Takei said he had no idea what she was talking about and compared her to Clint Eastwood.  I wasn't that critical.  That was mean.  I have a mind to unfriend him.  He'll eventually notice I am off his friend list.

Just got done watching "How to survive a plague". :'(
Tissue is drenched from sadness, pride, and remembering those early horrible years.
Sorry Andy, I didn't catch your shots, but thank you for being a part of it.
Living in the sticks of Connecticut in those early years with no money and "knowing" I would be dead soon left little hope other than the Act Up movement.
I was thankful then and have been greatful my entire life.
A "must see" for all newly infected to appreciate the effort and determination of those who put out the effort in the early years to keep us alive.
Thank you!
PS- did I say thank you???
