Overeating/Always Hungry,, Possible Side Effect??
« on: April 23, 2008, 11:09:01 pm »
I have been on Truvada and Kaletra for 2 weeks now.

I am noticing that I am always hungry and have started overeating since starting meds.  As an example today, I had scrambled eggs, grits, waffles and sausage links for breakfast.  I then had a midday snack from Blimpies 6 inch Turkey and Ham Combo w/ cookies and drink.  For lunch I went to my fave mexican restaurant and had a Large Steak Fajita Nachos. Came home raided the fridge and snacked on fruits, sandwiches, and pickles.  My roommate cooked around 8pm and we ate salisbury steak w/ gravy, mashed potato and asparagus.  Because I take my last Kaletra at 10pm, I sneaked out to Zaxbys  and ate the Grilled Chicken Sandwich Combo with Large Sweet Tea and a slice of key lime pie to go with my Kaletra.  Just typing about all this food makes me feel good inside,  I can taste it all over again.

I have lost alot of weight and I am wondering if this is just my body naturally reacting to wanting to gain normal body weight back.  It is just weird that this has just started happening within the past 2 weeks since starting meds.  One of the reasons, I had to wait to start meds is becuase the nurse educator felt I was depressed and I had to see a mental health counselor first.  I didnt think I was depressed or had any mental issues but now I am questioning if the meds have triggered something I am not aware of.

I am shy about being seen in public because of the change in my appearance (weight loss and discolored skin).  So I dont go to shopping malls, my office during business hours or hang out in public places with friends.

But restaurants are different.  Usually, I go alone, sit away from others and pig out.  I have also been making late nite trips to the drive thru at Wendys and McDonalds.  Sometimes I sit in the parking lots and eat before returning home.  I have been grocery shopping late nites at Kroger and WalMart also.

After eating a big meal, I will so relaxed and comfortable.  I take a nap and have been sleeping very well.  I meet with my doc and nurse educator for the first time since starting Kaletra and Truvada tomorrow.  I dont know if I should mention the overeating.  I have researched both meds and I havent found anything about increased appetite as a side effect.

I dont want to tell the nurse educator because I dont want her to freak out and refer me to the mental health counselour again.  All the mental health person did was ask the usual questions and tell me to call her if I ever needed to talk.  I didnt feel any different after speaking with her and still had the same attitudes about life, death, and my body image.  I feel it was just a waste of time.

I am hoping once my body goes back to a normal weight, I wont be as hungry.  Has anyone else experienced something similiar beginning meds after lossing alot of weight?

Coco, maybe you have an increase in your appetite because the meds are working and your body is trying to recover from the weight loss. And it's allowing you to do that (recover).  I can't give you a definitive answer, only a ventured guess.  You'd have to speak with your doctor.

When I began my treatment regimen (Truvada/Reyataz/Norvir) last November, I also morphed into a ravenous beast. And gained a bit of weight -- ballooned from 120 pounds (my normal weight since teenage days) to a portly 140! :)

Eventually my cravings subsided and I returned to more reasonable feed quantities, and dropped the extra weight too. So maybe after a while your late-night comestible runs will subside.

If I might suggest, though, the Burger Queen fixes aren't having a positive impact on your health! I keep a bunch of various-colored fresh and frozen pre-cut veggies in the house. About 10:30 each evening I put a couple handfuls in a wok with some oil, add ground ginger and minced garlic, and let sizzle for 10 minutes. Quite yummy and quicker than traipsing through some lame drive-through.

Just speaking from my experiences after I've had a major weight loss due to health problems once I start to recover my appetite goes through the roof.  It tends to level off once I'm back at my normal weight.

Your body is trying to rebuild itself with anything it can get.  The best thing would be try to eat healthy foods and monitor how you feel and of course check with your doctors if you are having any problems.

All the best!

Your CD4s are very low, but on the other hand your virus load has miraculously remained low.  Now that you have started meds your body can begin concentrating on daily functions and not constantly fighting this virus, but it will take awhile and lots of calories.  Many of your organs and your immune system have been working overtime for quite some time....they are tired, stressed, and worn out but now they have been given a break and been given the chance to rebuild, quite frankly it's party time....for them not you.    Everyone is different but it will take some time.  Your on some wonderful meds and being monitored by a Dr., good luck.

Hi Coco,

I remember you... how's it going with the treatment?

I am no doc but it sounds like a good thing to me, what ppl said your body recovering and all. I don't see how asking a nurse about increased apetite can lead to her freaking out. Have you considered "pigging out" on more wholesome stuff than mcd's?  ;) anyway, nice to hear from you, that you're sleeping well and feeling better, and enjoying life (food is life...) again. Take good care,

I've been hungry ever since starting meds (Atripla)!  I'm not as hungry in the morning (when I take my meds), but in the afternoon and evening I can eat and eat.  I lost about 20 lbs when I was on the PCP pneumonia diet and rebounded quite nicely and kept on going.  I guess I haven't gained all that much more weight than before I got sick, but damn if I don't always have the munchies!

I have been taking Kalletra and Truvada for 3 months. The first few weeks I got these ravenous hypo attackc where I felt that I had to eat immediately.

They eventually taperered off. And I went back to my normal eating habits.
I checked my counts after 1 month and my CD4 went up from 270 to 337 and my viral load is undtectable.

I now have higher cholestrol which must be monitored carefully. I started eating a bowl of oats for breakfast every day.
