iPad, now with wings!
« on: January 31, 2010, 04:44:41 pm »
All the hoopla surrounding the new iPad got me thinking about technology, what we find useful and why. I’m not sure I see the need for a “tween” device such as the iPad, as it is too big to be carried around like a phone but doesn’t have the power of a laptop. However if you think of the iPad as a super-Kindle, an e-reader that can also play games and use the internet, then it seems more useful. The funny thing about technology is you often don’t know you need a device until you use it.

I wasn’t sure I needed a laptop computer but after taking the plunge I found I use it every day at work, school and at home. I use my Zune mp3 player all the time but the camcorder my partner bought sits in a box in a closet untouched. I thought I would find a smartphone useful but after having one for almost 2 years I rarely use it, even to make phone calls. My younger brother, on the other hand, practically runs his business on his iPhone.

Time will tell whether the iPad will be a must-have device or a dust collector. Personally I think if all textbooks came out as e-books iPads and other e-readers would sells like hotcakes.  I have no plans to buy an e-reader or iPad but how about you?

I am getting one, sure thing.  Been avoiding the temptation of buying a Kindle (I still prefer how real books feel).  Plus, I broke my MacBook last week and have been using a ::cough:: Windows Vista laptop (or just my iPhone) whenever I need to be mobile. Will probably get the version with higher capacity, but no 3G.  There is no need to pay yet another media access fee when so many places offer free Wi-Fi.

I've been using a netbook for a couple of years to read books by the pool and in the park. I've downloaded hundreds of books as txt files and hate being stuck to the desktop during the Summer months just to read a book. I tried using a palm and a smartphone; but their screens just weren't big enough. The netbook is a little too big; but I can check my email and surf from it too, so it has it's pluses. ;)

Not to mention ATT's shitty 3G Network which is already shaky will come crashing down once all the Ipad's hop on. ATT says they are working to improve the system in preparation for the Ipad, but it will not be enough.
With that being said I will probably get one (the base $499 model) with Wifi only. Why pay an additional $30/mo for shitty 3g when i can get Wifi just about anywhere now, McDonalds, Libraries, Parks, Airports, Aircraft (although airlines charge a nominal fee for Wifi).
I know it already does everything a Touch Ipod does, etc...but for me it would be nice to sit in bed and relax with it. I only have a desktop and my My Iphone is just to small....so yeah, its for me.

I am hooked on Apple-anything, but I must admit I absolutely love my Kindle.  In fact, I am on my second one...gave the original to my sister and bought the new one.  After some initial orientation, I am as absorbed in it as I ever was with a book.  I get the New York Times and Washington Post everyday on it, not to mention quite a few books.  It is a dream to travel with...and to use when eating alone in a restaurant.

Lusting after an iPad but honestly don't have a need for it given I already have an iPhone, several iPods, a MacBook, two iMacs, and of course the Kindle.

I also like to read when eating alone in restaurants and usually take magazines because, unlike a paperback, they lay flat and stay open. With a Kindle, or iPad, I assume it would be easier to eat and read a novel.

Yeah I had NO CLUE my testost. was low until she just randomly ran it. 3 mos ago it was 35ish I think, and yesterday it tested at 76. Still very low. So now I have to rub the gel on daily vs. every other day. In 3 mos if it isnt any better I'll have to do the injections every 2 weeks. But the good news is that it's not a "rest of your life" thing. She said normally the body will start producing it on its own after being on replacement therapy. Yay.

The iPad will have a market, but I can't believe Apple didn't add handwriting recognition, so the iPad could actually be used as a pad... by business people on the go and students, the keyboard accessory looks nice, but to lug that around you might as well take your Netbook, Notebook or MacBook.
The lack of flash is OK for the type of browsing I do on my iPhone... but I expect it for a device of the size of the iPad.

For me this first version is nothing more than a large iTouch...  (iTouch Pro maybe)

Flash sucks chunks and is a resource hog.  If your browser crashes ever it's because of flash embeds. Youtube is already transitioning to HTML5. I expect more of that in the next year.

Not natively... I've seen some 3rd party apps, but seeing them being used, makes thumbing faster and easier... maybe ok for some texting, but wouldn't try to take notes in a meeting with it.
I would have added a stylus cleverly concealed in the iPad (a la Nintendo DS)... and native handwriting/graffiti support sure.

Steve Jobs is a minimalist with his products and doesn't believe in "feature bloat".  The only thing I'm not keen on is the inability to multi-task, but I'm sure once the processor is strong enough to allow it that will be added in.

Other than that I never buy "revision a" for any consumer electronic product if I can help it.  I remember all too well buying the first iBook to have OS X on it, but I had no choice with the timing.

I'm gonna get it.  I don't need a laptop for what I mostly use it for (surfing the net).  Plus I could download my newspapers and read them on the device on the way to work.

They got the price point right.  A bit unusual for Apple.

The more I think about e-readers the more sense they make. You can get a book almost anywhere in 60 seconds, adjust the size of the font, automatically switch to audio, carry hundreds of books with you, reference material faster. I can't even imagine the trees that would be saved if people read newspapers, magazines and books on e-readers. Less paper that missed recycling would end up in landfills.

I'm not ready to shell out 500 bucks though, trees be damned. :-[

Yeah, from what I know they started working on it before the iPhone, but the technology wasn't ready for something the size of the iPad so what stuff worked they channeled into developing the iPhone first, then finishing the iPad.  I assume that this is also why Apple decided to acquire P.A. Semiconductor in 2008 and make their own chips for the iPad.

Here is some competition coming out of India for the iPad. It is called ADAM and it is going to operate on Android OS. It has a new kind of color touchscreen with a backlight that can be turned off, yet you can still see the picture. On a single charge the device can operate for 16 hours with the backlight on and 160 hours with the backlight off. :o

Looks nice, and it has a couple of advantages over the iPad (USB ports, multi-tasking, camera).  Too bad they are waiting till Jun-Jul to release it; by then some of the market will be taken as those who want a better tablet will have spent their money on Apple's little gadget.  And we know that Apple and AT&T are going to saturate the media with advertisement for this product.

Yeah, funny how Apple is immune to the laws of foreign exchange.  I think the government called them out on it in terms of Itune pricing, but that's gone all quiet.  More important things to worry about, I suppose.

That Hitler bit shouldnt be funny but its freaking hilarious.  Also, the logic behind it would be that Apple is a German company and Hitler is outraged at the shame of this shoddy product.  "If I wanted an ebook reader I would buy a Kindle!" hehehehe.

You know IBM fully functioned in Nazi Germany, making a fake subsidiary to keep doing so. All the precision of the Holocaust was done with IBM counting machines.

I went to an Apple store yesterday and now I simply MUST buy the new 27" iMac.  My current iMac is approaching five years so it's kind of a mess.  I also just got a new 40" flat screen for a bargain, and there's no sales tax in Delaware where I bought it.  Wilmington is just a short 25 minute drive down I-95 from here.

I also now want a RokuHD so I can stream Netflix and Amazon HD movies!

Me too, but our iMAC Resolution now are based for graphic 32-bit Color (ARG8888) what ever that mean.

I saw somewhere that they are coming with 64 bit system which would be great for the next generation one.

I would hate to buy something that would be outdated soon after, and with these products things are changing so fast.

iPad?  2 dixie cups connected by string for me, thanks.  I hate my iPhone 3GS which has to be charged daily even with everything turned off.  I just got this cute Motorola Karma & music even sounds better than the iPhony (& it takes SD cards so that 32GB will go to waste unless I use it as an iPod -- anyone want a good deal on an iPhone?)

Boo, some iPhone did have a battery problem. Mine did and I was told by my wireless provider to reset the phone completely with iTune and I never had this problem again. Make sure you backup. It should automatically.

I just love my iPhone, especially being deaf, I have voicemail with SpinVox technology, that translate your spoken words into a text one for me to read. And all this in 4 minutes or so.

Since emails are not always in real time, this is quite useful for me.

This should keep you up-to-date with possible refresh issues:

http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/#iMac

Frankly there have been so many "flickering" issues with the 27" displays because they're so new that I'm fine to wait three months before I buy one.  By that time they should have had it sorted out.

My brother recently got an iPhone and he says he has surrendered his life to it. It tell him when to wake up, when to work, how to exercise, what food to eat, where to get the food, how to prepare the food, what news to read, what movies to watch, it hooks him up with dates, it babysits his child...

My phone, um, makes phone calls. :(

I find the iPhone cumbersome to use.  I'm considering either a Samsung Moment or HTC Hero with Sprint, plus Sprint's data service package is about $30 less a month than AT&T (which drops calls all of the time anyway, at least in the northeast corridor).

The camera (5 megapixel) is better on the Hero than the Moment (3.2) but I like the slide out keyboard on the Moment -- both are Android OS so that's a ++ for me.  Plus I've been a Sprint customer for six years so I have a very high upgrade budget from them and can get a $500 phone for $99... can't really beat that.

A video update on the Adam. The camera and back track pad are very clever.

I was impressed by the Netflix announcement too, also that Hulu will have an app. I was very pleased to hear Amazon and Barnes & Noble will both have apps for iPad, so you don't have to buy books only from Apple.

I've been following the iPad on Engadget and I'm seriously considering buying one when the 3G version comes out later this month. I'm particularly interested in eReader features.

I hear the 3rd gen iPad will be much thinner, have a 1080p HD cam-camcorder, twice the battery life, and a DVD/Blu-ray slot on the side. And cost less then the 1st gen iPad. I speak of the 3rd gen, not the 2nd coming in january 2011. (but, this is just between you and me)    ;)

Well I got an iPad yesterday and I'm liking it a lot! The NetFlix app is great. The things that some are saying about the iPad are not a problem for me. Really the iPad's competition is not a net book, laptop or smartphone. The competition is the Kindle, Nook and Sony's e reader, and it is a compelling alternative to those devices. I'm am a bit of a Apple fan boy but if one needs to have more than one app open, needs to have lots of extra things plugged in, then an iPad doesn't meet your needs and you shouldn't get one. That doesn't make it a bad device.  For me it's easier to watch video's on the iPad than on my Macbook and reading things on my iPhone isn't so great. We'll see how much I use it. I think it's going to be quite a lot.

I agree, especially when the Kindle DX costs about the same as the iPad. IPad looks like a great color eReader. The Marvel Comics app has me totally geeking out.

So now HP releases a little more info about its iPad wannabe, the Slate.  Must say that they make it look pretty decent (camera, USB, memory card slot, etc.)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AeDalRBjyJo

HP preps its would-be iPad killer, the Slate

Quote

Remember the HP Slate, the upcoming Windows 7-powered tablet that we first saw during Microsoft's CES keynote back in January? Well, we just got more details on HP's would-be iPad killer, thanks to a new, official teaser video and Engadget's decidedly unofficial series of leaked specs.

The last time we saw the Slate was in the hands of Steve Ballmer during a rather tepid presentation in Las Vegas, with Ballmer showing off the Kindle reader and struggling a bit as he tried to tee up a video. But HP has clearly stepped up its game, starting with this snazzy 30-second teaser video that makes a point of showing off all the features on the Slate that are missing on the iPad, such as a built-in camera, a USB port (a real one, not an adapter), and an SD card slot.

Just a few hours after the video was posted, Engadget managed to snag what appears to be an HP marketing sheet — titled, none too subtly, "HP Slate vs. iPad" — that specifically stacks up the Slate to the iPad, point for point. Now, before we dive into the details here, let's just point out that HP has yet to officially cough up detailed specs for the Slate, much less a price tag or a release date (other than "this year," that is). Still, if what we're looking at here is real, it's a pretty clear indication that HP is positioning the Slate as an iPad killer.

Looking at the (purported) spec sheet, the Slate appears to have a series of enticing features that are missing on the iPad. There's the camera, of course, and we're not just talking one but two: a 3MP lens in back and a front-facing VGA camera for video conferencing. We've also got a single USB 2.0 port, an SD card reader, a "conventional" SIM tray for 3G networking, and HDMI-out video capabilities (not to mention 1080p playback) via the Slate's dock connector. (Each of these key points are highlighted on the leaked marketing sheet as an "HP advantage," by the way.)

Pretty interesting, and here's a few more details to boot (again, not official): an 8.9-inch, 1024-by-600-pixel display (slightly smaller and lower-res than the iPad), a 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor under the hood, and 32 or 64GB of built-in flash storage (expandable via the SD card slot). The spec sheet doesn't mention Flash support specifically, but HP has already made it pretty clear that yes, you will be able to view Flash videos on the Slate.

The leaked spec sheet describes the Slate as measuring 9.2 by 5.7 by 0.57 inches, making the Slate (potentially) a tad taller, narrower, and thicker than the iPad (9.56 by 7.47 by 0.5 inches), as well as a tiny bit lighter (1.49 pounds, vs. 1.5 pounds for the iPad).

The leaked marketing sheet also ticks off a few specs labeled as "HP threat" — in other words, areas in which the iPad would have a leg up over the Slate, at least for now. Among them: no support for 802.11n, the latest official Wi-Fi standard; just five hours of battery life, versus 10 hours for the iPad; and a slightly more expensive price tag for the 16GB model ($549, versus $499 for the 16GB iPad) — although, to be fair (and if the leaked specs are true), the $549 16GB Slate might come with a SIM tray, whereas the equivalent 3G-enabled iPad will set you back $629.

Of course, one of the biggest selling points for the Slate (and yes, this we know for certain) is Windows 7, a full-on, multitasking, desktop-caliber operating system. The iPad runs on a modified version of the iPhone OS, and among other things lacks third-party-app multitasking (although that may be changing soon). Then again, the iPad OS is specifically designed for touch and runs lightning-fast; Windows 7 is designed for a keyboard and mouse (HP is promising a "touch-optimized UI" to help with fingertip navigation). And it remains to be seen whether Slate's 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor will be up to the task of making Windows 7 run smoothly on a 1.5-pound tablet.

Let's just say one more time that the leaked marketing sheet obtained by Engadget isn't official; and even if it is real, the listed specs are certainly subject to change; and again, we still don't have an official price tag.

Still, if the Slate proves anything, it's that the tablet wars won't end with the iPad; indeed, they're only beginning. If the iPad turns out to be a hit (and the jury's still out), it'll spur more competition in the tablet "space" ("Courier," anyone?), and that's a good thing.

"I have tried hard--but life is difficult, and I am a very useless person. I can hardly be said to have an independent existence. I was just a screw or a cog in the great machine I called life, and when I dropped out of it I found I was of no use anywhere else."

After getting a cash bonus for 15 years at my job I decided to do something crazy and indulgent and bought a iPad. This is my first Apple product and it took some time to download iTunes and transfer music and photos. So far it is exceeding my expectations, in fact so I think it is going to almost replace my laptop. It is very convenient for browsing the net and viewing pictures and movies. I love reading books and news... comics are particularly awesome. The keyboard is much more functional than I thought it would be and the battery really does appear to last 10 hours. So far the only negatives are 1) it is rather heavy to hold in one hand while reading, and 2) removing fingerprints is a pain.

My partner, who is so newbie he just got his first email address last week, was so impressed by how handy and easy to use this iPad is he is going to buy mine and I am going to get a 3G model when they come out.
