I am a 24 yo male that had anal sex with an anonymous man but was protected with a condom. The encounter lasted about 3 minutes and when I pulled out I did not notice any breakage in the condom. The condom to my vision was stil intact. Im worried because 7 days after that I started to have diarrhea and nausea and very very mild body aches. I wanted to know 1) Is it possible for the condom to have a tear and not be noticeable, or not completely break to the point of notice? 2) whats my risk if there was a small tear in the condom that i didnt notice? Please help!

Your condom did not failed. Had it failed you would have known without a doubt. MOVE ON..

Ok so could it be possible that if I went in too deep, that anal juices could have gotten under the condom....i know these seem to be silly questions but im just worried. Ive been to the doctor but he seemed to have brushed all of my concerns off the counter.

No, "juices" would not have gotten beneith your condom. Of course your doctor is brushing you off because you didn't have a risk.

You are worrying needlessly. You used a condom for intercourse which is exactly what you are supposed to do. They provide very effective protection. If it had broken it would have been very clear that happened.

If you can't let go of this unwarranted concern then I suggest that you see a counselor or other professional to discuss what is driving your worries. There is no basis in HIV science for you to be worried nor is there any need for testing.

You're welcome. Keep using those condoms everytime and you won't have any problems as far as sexual risk for HIV is concerned.

Hello Ann and Andy and all other staff,

I went to the gym and while in the sauna i had unprotected insertive anal intercourse with another male of unknown status for 5 to 7 seconds... This was the dumbest move i could have made.... Altough his anus was pretty well lubed and so was my penis, is this risk likely to infect me??... Please help ive been prescribed a prescription of PEP meds after I thoroughly expressed my concerns but i cannot afford and I wanna know if I should raise the money to get it... I am in within the first 72 hours of the encounter...so a quick response would be highly regarded!

What you did was definitely unsafe. However, I don't think it warrants doing PEP. A single incident of that brevity is very unlikely to result in transmission.

Just as a precaution you ought to get tested. You can do that initially at 6 weeks and 13 weeks for a definitve all clear. PEP is not something to embark upon lightly so you have to decide if you want that reassurance.

You do need to learn from this experience. Although the risk is less for the insertive partner, it is definitely risky. You can have anal sex with anyone you want to. But you need to do it the safer way which means the insertive partner is always wearing a condom. No exceptions.

Thank you Andy!!! I have been pulling my hair out all day.... I definitely know that is was very unsafe and immediately after the encounter I felt extremely guilty..... Also there was no blood or semen from him that was visible after the encounter....One more question might I add.... Considering that I am circumcised and it wasnt hard to enter this guy due to alot of lube would those factors also reduce my risk....just need a mind easer!

I recently had a very brief exposure as an insertive partner in homosexual encounter (lasted from 5-9 seconds)... I was wondering if a negative NAT test 6 days after exposure is a good sign.... Please Ann or Andy help!

You don't need NAT testing. NAT testing can return false positive results. Any NAT testing will have to be confirmed with standard antibody testing at the appropriate time anyway. NAT testing will not give you ANY conclusive results.

As you've been told, what you did was very much on the low end of the risk scale. I do not expect you to end up hiv negative as a result of this very brief, insertive incident.
