Welcome to the "Do I Have HIV?" POZ forum.

This special section of the POZ forum is for individuals who have concerns about whether or not they are HIV positive. Individuals are permitted to post up to three questions or responses in this forum.

Ongoing participation in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum (posting more than three questions or responses) requires a paid subscription, with secure payments made via PayPal.

A seven-day subscription is $9.99, a 30-day subscription is $14.99 and a 90-day subscription is $24.99.

What are my chances? Occupational blood exposure....

I am a medical student who was on elective in trauma surgery in Johannesburg. During insertion of a chest drain I must have torn my glove while bluntly dissecting and putting my finger into the pleural cavity. I had the blood/fluid on my finger for at least 30min as I didn't realise until I had finished closing his stab wounds. I didn't feel a prick, and I don't have open wounds on my fingers, but I do have dry skin and tags and some cracks around my finger nails.

HIV came back positive on the man and I started Aspen Lamivid 300/150mg BD within 2 hours. I have a course for 28 days.

My questions are.

1. What is my risk of acquiring HIV with and without PEP? 2. When is the earliest I will know absolutely know for sure that I will be negative? I would never forgive myself if I infected my girl friend. 3. Does PEP affect the testing reliability? It would seem plausible that PEP might delay positive result ELISA or PCR. 4. Am I on the correct PEP regimen?

Thanks for your wisdom and experience AND PLEASE BE 100% SURE ABOUT YOUR OPINION. DO NOT JUST WORK ON ASSUMPTIONS. PLEASE GIVE ME REAL AND HONEST RESPONSES.

Didn't you have infectious disease module in your med class.

I did but the infectious disease specialist was very adamant about me taking PEP. It was quite frightening.

In my opinion instituting PEP for this incident was an overly cautious response. I don't see this incident as having been risky including with the details about your skin, etc.

Doing PEP extends the period for testing by 28 days. In other words, you have to count the 13 weeks for a final negative result from when PEP is completed. Assuming you test negative at 6 weeks after the completion of PEP, that negative result is very unlikely to change to positive at 13 weeks.

And I do expect you to test negative.
