Alcohol and Immune System
« on: October 12, 2008, 10:43:21 am »
Hi there, I received a positive diagnosis about a month ago. The results seem to point to a recent seroconversion. First round of test were low CD4 and 14,000 VL. Second reflected doubled CD4 and VL of 5,000. Anyway, my doctor does not recommend meds at this point. We're still working on the baseline.

I asked what I can do and he said, "eat lots of fresh fruits and veggies, get rest, watch your stress, exercise and avoid alcohol." He then said keep it at 2 drinks.

I eat well and fresh (love to cook), I've doubled my exercise activity, I've managed my stress pretty well and have tried to maintain a pretty good attitude. But, I drink red wine almost daily with my evening meal. It's part of my post-work routine. I'd hate to give it up, but I will if I have to. I've found information on alcohol and meds, but not a lot on pre-med influences on the immune system.

Does anyone have any info?

thanks so much.

Uh, he said "keep it at 2 drinks" so what's the issue?  Do you drink more than 2 glasses of red wine daily?  There's a big difference between 2 glasses and daily inebriation in terms of how it effects your body -- regardless of HIV infection.

Hi There,

Welcome to the forums...
I don't see a problem with a glass or two of wine. In fact, it may be beneficial  !! Everything your doctor suggested is good. Make sure to get enough sleep everyday.

On the contrary of other alcoholic beverages, red wine is not only harmless to the immune system but is also thought to help the immune system  prevent certain cancers.

Personally, red wine have always been part of my diet (2 glasses a day).    Before Hiv, after turning poz and now with the meds and I feel great.

Cheers
