Anyone know if traveling to Japan or Taiwan will be a problem carrying HIV meds in  luggage?

Aren't you better off taking them in your carry-on bag?  You wouldn't want for that checked-in luggage to get lost and having no meds while you're away from home.

Ah, and Japan will not present any issue as far HIV meds are concerned.

I'm not sure the answer to your question, but I have found every airport seems to have their own rules.

When flying home from Florida this month, we flew out of this tiny little airport in Punta Gorda.  It reminded me of the airport from the show, "Wings".  I didn't have any HIV meds, but I had other medications.  They pulled me aside and went through my bag looking at my prescriptions.  They put me through that new VERY personal pat-down where they put their hands everywhere.  I hadn't gotten so much action in a long time.  They claimed this was due to "wearing loose-fitting sports pants".  It wasn't because I didn't go through those screeners, because they didn't have them.  I was also bringing home this shell wind-chime.  They actually swabbed it and the bag it was in for explosives.  I had to wait while they put the swab into this machine to test for explosives.  I think they were just a small airport and were going way overboard when this wouldn't have happened at a larger airport.

I can't imagine having a problem with HIV meds in Japan.  It isn't Saudi Arabia.  It could be possible that you get someone going way overboard with screening, like happened with me, but would send you on your way.

Taiwan does not have travel restriction for short term tourist visit, except for applying for work visa, etc. Japan as far as I know is even more welcoming. So not entirely sure why you're concern with baggage search, except it's understandable that under some circumstances some of us don't want to answer questions about our HIV status, especially to government officials in a foreign country.

So just from experiences - I have never once been searched while entering Taiwan, and I have done it many many times. They however are very strict when it comes to party drugs so the customs can get very suspicious when they see pills. So be prepared to tell them what they're for if asked, otherwise it may cause you more trouble.

In Japan they almost always search bags, but from experiences except for suspicious looking travelers the customs follks usually just ask you (politely, as they do in Japan) to open your laggages and bags and take a quick look. Again, just my experiences, I have never been thoroughly checked once.

Good luck.

I travel frequently with many health supplements (pills) in both my check in and hand carry, and never been checked. Only places that questioned and took out my supplement bottles and scrutinized, were in; Australia, NY, LA and one time Turkey. I almost always wondered why places like Bangkok don't check even it's a infamous magnet for drugs generally, but I guess they have the sniff dogs for that purpose.

Japan & Taiwan are 2 of the coolest places to visit without hassles, unless of cos one is smuggling illegal stuff, then any country is dangerous.  ;)

Enjoy your trip.
