How to go about....
« on: January 09, 2010, 08:06:38 pm »
My Xlover has been HIV positive for quite sometime now, now i was wanting to ask him about having a baby now does anyone have any information on what the odds' would be if we did it the old fashion way?(i have tested neg now for a number of years and i really don't want to become poz) or the IVF way?
does the amount of meds he may be taking now have any bearing on his child making abilities or passing something along to baby?

You should check with his doc for local policy etc, but people conceive naturally without transmitting HIV.  There are a few different methods, and they mostly involve......

The positive parter being on meds and undectable for at least 6 months.

The negative partner taking the same HIV meds for conception.  You should avoid Efavirenz/Stocrin as this drug can cause birth defects.

Some doctors will suggest 'sperm washing'.  HIV does not live in sperm, only in the seminal fluid.  A sample is acquired from the male and 'spun down' - greatly reducing the chances of transmission.

Nevirapine ( a HIV drug ) has the best penetration of the genital tract.  If your partner is not taking this he could add it to his combo prior to giving the sample.  He can have his cum tested to see if he has undectable virus there before conceiving.

Good luck!
