Pomegranate to cure HIV?
« on: December 12, 2007, 12:22:17 pm »
I was browsing the poz.com site and there was an ad: "Natural Therapy Study for HIV-Positive Individuals". So I click on it and here is what I see:

http://www.aidsresearch.org/POMgocard2.jpg

What is the "indice of quality of life" they're talking about? The "details" are not very detailed to say the least.

"Indices" = plural of 'index'. There are any number of these, usually a questionnaire taken before and after interventions.

Actually, they don't claim it's a cure. Improving the "quality of life" is a very general statement, of course. Could be anything or nothing at all, really. Have you tried the phone number?

Pomegranate is a quite tart fruit that has many beneficial properties regarding the heart, in particular. So, naturally, they will study it in regards to HIV. A cure? I don't believe. I try to drink it regularly but it's not a daily thing. $2.50 for a pint at WalMart Superstores.

Well I find the ad a bit "deceiving". It talks about therapy study, therapy = treatment. So it's a treatment study using Pomegranate, which is fine with me, but then it talks about the 'indices of quality of life'. As far as I know, all other ads for HIV treatment talk about VL and CD4, not indices of life. I'm just wondering if an ad like this is not bad for people who are afraid of taking meds and will just rush to the grocery store and drink gallons of Pomegranate. I feel that this ad should give a bit more info without having to call or ask for a brochure.

well the aids research alliance is a great center where they have lots of people, usually they do clinical trials and vaccine trials, they are the only hiv open clinical trial office right in the heart of west hollywood, only about 20 meters from the clubs, they are right next to being alive office, they do lots of vaccine trials, and other trials that are usually provided to them from other bigger universities, and such, usually they are just an med admin office for clinical trials and they do a very very good job of new esp. very new vaccine trials and such
anyone in usa can go there and sign up they have a great staff and they are a very professional org.

what happened is that they got some funding to study a natural treatment and natural substance, not sure where the funding came from could have been city of LA or city of Weho

i think there has been alot of desire to at least test some natural products to see if they have an effect in a clinical trial science setting

i think they also are not just using the juice but they have the active ingredient separated, but i could be wrong on that, it is a good honest science attempt by a very very experienced clinical trial office to test the real life effects and measure the results of one natural product or maybe the equal of  many times the dose you could drink

i have been in their office, i have signed up for vaccine trials, but never qualified,

they have scientists and drs and office staff and everything they do is absolutely by the protocol, they get new meds from big pharma and they do trials

so they are totally legit in that way

i think there is a push on in the gay meccas to improve the quality of life and feel good of hiv poz and maybe that is why they say indices instead of tcell count

i am calling now

ten week controlled study

juice placebo controlled
really concentrated super concentrated juice
placebo tastes like the juice
then two doses
regular juice  and super high concentrated
10 week
study

so there are three doses, zero, normal or regular, and super high

on tenth week you can do one month with juice if you got the placebo

we know the juice to have cardio benefit

but we are trying to see for our study to test viral load to see if juice lowers VL

every visit you get viral load every month on study

super concentrated and then regular juice or placebo

anywhere in so cal or fly in if you want

you can be on hiv meds
and on the study

vl above 1000
less than 80,000

tcell above 350

basically that is the facts

I've been drinking this stuff daily for three years, and I am not cured yet( nor do I expect to be) .... I do like pomegranate juice though. I mentioned this quite a while back, I buy it at Sam's club. A 30 ounce bottle runs about $15.00 or so. So, one bottle lasts me one month.

I only take one ounce a day, in apple juice, as this is concentrated, and the one ounce is the recommended amount. Once ounce is equivalent to eating 15 pomegranates.

And I think that's what is bothering me most in this ad. HIV is not a cold, it's a terrible disease that eats your immune system. It's always been, it always going to be until they find a cure. If now we're talking about the hiv health index like we're talking about the body mass index then we're up for trouble.

What's my index?

Milky,

My take on the 'indices of quality of life' thing is that they are trying to find out if drinking this stuff makes any difference to things like fatigue and energy levels, brainfog, things like that which can affect one's quality of life.

After all, it's well known that hiv in general, as well as the meds, can greatly reduce one's quality of life and for many, it's a big issue.

I don't know if pomegranate juice will cure HIV, but if you drink it with with enough tequila, you may forget that you have HIV to begin with.

Milker:

This note from Ann is definitely worth repeating:

My take on the 'indices of quality of life' thing is that they are trying to find out if drinking this stuff makes any difference to things like fatigue and energy levels, brainfog, things like that which can affect one's quality of life.

After all, it's well known that hiv in general, as well as the meds, can greatly reduce one's quality of life and for many, it's a big issue.

"Quality of life" is actually a significant research parameter. Fact of the matter is, many HIV-positive people have a decreased quality of life -- compared with HIV-negative "controls" -- due to antiretroviral side effects and various HIV-related complications. Fatigue... depression... nausea/diarrhea... weakness -- they can all affect a person's quality of life, especially when these problems are severe and chronic.

Virtually all clinical trials -- including those involving antiretrovirals, treatments of opportunistic infections and cancers, and modalities for other HIV-related complications -- include questionnaires, interviews, etc. to determine if quality-of-life improves while in the study. This is a HUGE bargaining chip for sponsors of this studies, not only with consumers but also with the FDA. Fact of the matter is, a drug or complementary therapy cannot "legally" claim that its product improves quality of life unless it has been shown to do so in clinical trials.

Here are some of the actual names of quality-of-life indices employed in clinical trials:

15D Measure of Health-Related Quality of Life
COOP/WONKA Charts
Current Perceived Health
Duke Health Profile
Health and Daily Living Form
McMaster Health Index Questionnaire
MOS 36-Item Short Form Health Survey
Patient Generated Index
Quality of Life Inventory
Quality of Life Questionnaire
RAND 36 Item Health Survey
Scale for the Evaluation of Individual Quality of Life
Sickness Impact Profile
Spitzer Quality of Life Index
UK Sickness Impact Profile
WHOQOL-100

Truth be told, I don't know all that much about pomegranate's therapeutic mechanism of action, let alone the specific details of the trial. However, I'm extremely encouraged that groups like the AIDS Research Alliance are actually conducting studies like this. I guarantee that, at some future date in the Forums, we're going to get a question about pomegranate and HIV. At least we'll have the results of a study to draw upon. All too often, we simply don't have any research of the sort.

Thanks Ann and Tim. Makes more sense now, maybe the ad should have been clearer, my concern was that people would start a Pomegranate regimen to improve their numbers without understanding what is being this study.

Wish, I love Pomegranate, I will try with Tequila and see how my quality of life improves!  :o
