Worth testing?
« on: February 11, 2009, 10:32:57 pm »
I fingered a girl (I'm a male) and she was bleeding...I didn't know it at the time.  It was in her car and at night.  Right after fingering her, immediately I put my fingers in her mouth and we started deep kissing.  A few moments later, I went down on her..again, not knowing that she was bleeding.  When I realized (from the smell, taste) I stopped.  If she was HIV+ ( I don't know this, just worst case scenario), should I test?  I know that oral isn't a likely transmission route for HIV but does her being on her period alter that?

Thanks.

Honestly, the chances of you being HIV positive from this encounter are low. I understand that you are concerned as she was on her period, but HIV transmission in this case is unlikely.....assuming your worst case scenario.

It does beg another question. If you are having sexual relations, do you know how to protect yourself from STD's? If not, then read the lessons section on HIV transmission and get educated on STD transmission in general.

Should you test? Everyone should have an HIV test if they are having sexual relations, but that is just my opinion. I do, for what it is worth. But I don't limit it to just HIV.

Thank you for responding so quicly.  Sorry, I was unclear.  I test once a year for all the standard std test...the last time being in Dec 08.  I was completley clean at that time.  I was just wondering if I have to make a special trip to the doctor becuase of this particular encounter; with her blood and all.  I gather you are saying that the chances of HIV are low, but not 0, so I should get tested to be on the safe side.  When I get tested, they will test for all the other std tests too...but in the future, I shouldn't be so careless.  Thanks again.

It's up to you. I wouldn't, but that is me. Should you take a test? Honestly, I wouldn't, but you created a username on a HIV forum and asked the question, so you are clearly concerned about it....so it doesn't matter what I think. Do I think you have HIV from this incident? Not at all. Do I think you should test? Not at all. Should you test so you can forget about it? That's a question only you can answer. I would try and not think about it and learn from this experience.....as  I think it's a bit of a waste of a test to test for this.

Just one more thing. Don't say you are "clean" when you talk about infection. Logically that implies people with HIV or any other STD are dirty. I know you didn't mean it in that way and it's a common mistake....it might be somantics, but I feel it is important.

At no time were you ever at risk of contracting HIV through fingering.

Sam,

Going down on a woman isn't a risk for hiv infection. The saliva in your mouth has anti-hiv properties.

As for being clean when you tested, I take it you took a shower before you went to the clinic? Good, I bet the doctor was glad you did. However. If you're using the word clean to describe your sexual health, you need to know that it is very insulting to those of us living with hv because you're calling us dirty. Think about it. I'm hiv positive and I'm also clean. I shower every day.

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts

HVworker, Ann, RapidRod - thank you all for your answers (and through them, for lessening my anxiety).  HiVworker, Ann- sorry about using the word "clean".  When I think about it- your right, it is insulting and in a way demeaning.  I won't describe myself in such a manner anymore.  Thank you all again.
