05/2012: Started reservoir reduction study

Manhattan Project: a reservoir reduction proof of concept study
***********************************************

Hi,

Starting May 2012, I have joined a prospective proof of concept study for a molecule aimed at HIV reservoir eradication.

This thread is being opened to provide as much patient testimony as I am allowed to.

My treatment history can be viewed at :
http://forums.poz.com/index.php?topic=33062.0

As of today, they are no large clinical trial of interest to me in my area, I have therefore joined this small scale study.

After a certain delay in being accepted and being explained the nature of the study, aka the intervention, I have had to sign a informed consent form, which was easy enough...

On top of that I had to sign a 20 or more pages of confidentiality agreement which states what information about the outcome and the procedure I am entitled to receive and/or make public.
In other words, should the proof of concept, be successfull, there are many further legal steps (patents, publications, etc.) that do require to be protected. That was kind of unexpected

Because of the design of the experiment, there is no need for a control group, so I am in the intervention arm, so to speak.

The intervention started mid of may with a preliminary safety induction, which went well.

The initial dosage was very small (or so we thought) and no effect was seen.

The intervention, per se, is scheduled to start in the summer. The aim is to 'reactivate' the latent CD4 reservoir and see if it can be decreased.

One of the reasons I could enter this study is that I had been infected recently and treated early enough (less that one year post infection).
Duration of treatment had to be small at enrollment. it is expected that the immune system may have remained active enough to go after CD4s that may be awaken from their latency

End of may, I got my second safety induction.
Apparently, it lead to an early immune system response that was not expected at that dosage...

But, so far so good

I'd like to share patient experience with others undergoing these type of studies, especially if this is something they feeled from within their body as well as the emotional aspects.

Cheers

Eric

Yes, Eric. You should be able to google the title of the study and get something. I googled the title you suggest, but I have a feeling it's not the title that would appear at the top of any of the literature or papers you have been given (or signed) because it's not coming back with anything when placed in quotes.

My partner has taken part in a study recently and I was able to get results using the title at the top of one of the pages he was given, so I know it's possible.

If you plan on discussing your experiences with the trial, it would be useful to at least have some of the official information on it. Thanks.

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts
